What is more unbelievable is that Maestra sang dramatico, coloratura, lyrical plus mezzo soprano. Her E flat 6 sat so firm while she sang at lower 4th octave comfortably. What a soprano we have lost. Deeply saddened she was destroyed by Onasis... so sad

As always Callas manages to create a world of interpretation in what is, often in other hands, merely a show-offish display of one’s coloratura arsenal. Callas’ stark approach and clarity brings Ophelia’s delirium to life. The honesty of her phrasing embodies the tragedy of the scene. Not only does she achieve this, but with a coloratura technique that can only be described as perfect. That is The Callas Way!

    • @artdanks4846

Manoli S....you gave a perfect and precise description of how Callas approaches this aria! I had heard Sutherland's rendition numerous, times over the course of several years, before I had heard Callas's. And while the vocal virtuosity of Sutherland's was impeccable, it lacked what Callas brings to it: a window into Ophelia's delirium.

Oh my.. Callas never disappoints, does she? What a diction one gets every word! And what an intricate way of singing the words! When one listens to the early recordings of the past sopranos of the 20’s and 30’s it all seems easy and straightforward somehow “paisan” but listen to Callas.. it is not easy! It is not straightforward! It’s elaborate, it’s somehow complicated and full of fioriture..BUT! So are most of our minds, thoughts… this to me is the closest to reality to real feelings displayed through music! Maybe there were others who sung clearer/not so harshly in the upper notes/ more legato ( although i have to wonder about who did it all better than her…) but to me she is the only one really making me feel these were her thoughts and feelings she felt/experienced then and there

Most of early soprano (or any singers) recordings were pretty mediocre if not downright bad, i am surprised that this singers got so many praise at their time. In a sense, is not different from now when many singers (this include those outside opera as well) are called great without really deserving it.

I happen to LOVE Callas.....however....saying "Callas never dissapoints" lowers any expectations of reality in what you say after.
Again, I Love Callas, but even as early as her Lucias in New York in 1955 (she was just 32) the Wobble is very problematic, and only gets worse as time goes on.
Again, those of us who love her are Fine with accepting her foibles in exchange for the overall performances.
But to say she "Never dissapoints" is untrue.
"Never" is a binary state. It's Yes, or No.
So, as Absofreakinglutely Amazing as she was, she was still human. She *did* at times, in places, disappoint

He sent Bastias, the director of the National Lyric Scene, to ask her if it would be possible to reduce her reward explaining her the reason. Maria answered smiling "my reward is not negotiable, but I can do something different. I will sing for free for all those people who are waiting to hear me". And so did she.

When I hear a ‘new’ recording of Maria Callas I’m mentally trying to rate degrees of excellence in her live performances which is a foolish exercise. She always commits 100% emotionally, musically & technically - in the way that all great artists have shown the world throughout history. Most of our current artists fail to tick all 3 boxes which definitely warps/diminishesour appreciation of the incredible art produced by great operatic composers. Brava Callas! And for any non-believers, check her singing with the written scores and note how meticulously every part of the music is sung with exactly what each composer wanted from singers. It’s hard to believe this incredible artistry was given

I subsribed to your channel but you RUINED my pleasure of listening to majority of operas played nowadays. Sometimes it is better not to know, how it really should be sang, how hey sing half of the notes in La Traviata arias ( 3 x live , 2 recordigs). But thank you nevertheless. I was stupid enough to listen to Netrebko macasre of Turandot, like squeezing herself to pump out the notes, but unfortunately i was born after Callas death and Sutherland and Caballe prime time. At least I know why I dont like 90% of tenors , I was more lenient on sopranos but you finished this. Why we can not here something like this theese days? No more voices good enough?

the Holy Triad of the 20th century (Maria, dame Joan and Montsy) wont be easily reincarnated if even so in the 21st... but there are Spectacular Voices today that do marvels: Marina Rebeka, Julia Lezhneva and Lisette Oropesa. For years my mind was comparing everything to Callas then to dame Joan in her chosen repertoire and that didnt allow me to enjoy so many PHENOMENAL voices (that you can find in my channel right now)... I u sually say that only God if he ever sang could be compared to Maria's singing... that doesnt mean ,,,,
