Whenever I felt down, I used to get this immense urge to spend money. I gave in to that urge and justified it thinking there is nothing wrong in it. Now I reason with myself and prioritise needs over wants. I realised that my mood at any given moment is not permanent and that it can change. If I give in to a temporary impulse, I will regret it later. Saving the money is where its all at
"I'm not particularly bothered by ads..." / "Ads don't affect me..." / etc. Advertisers love this. Psychologically, the people who tend to say this are exactly the kinds of people who let their guard slip and are more likely to be affected than those who are more defensive about manipulation and the effects of advertising on mental health.
But what if you say this and don’t buy anything? 😂 like I see ads but I know the money I have and will never buy unnecessary shit because I saw it online. I can feel a type of way for a bit (insecure, jealous, left out, etc) but that feeling has NEVER outweighed the feeling of being broke
I recently re-downloaded TikTok to get Thanksgiving recipes and just in a brief moment, I’ve already saved videos about things from Trader Joe’s I wanna go buy because I saw it on social media. I never felt the need to go to Trader Joe’s recently up until I started watching these ‘TJ new items’ videos. Scary how super influential social media is!
I had reddit and instagram on my phone, I deleted those apps a year ago. My life's been way better without them. I've been more calm and grounded, more frugal, and less stressed.
Getting rid of the apps on your phone is definitely a good way to cut out the social media. I found that I didn’t really miss it at all once I cut it out. Also, blocking all short form video has been helpful. A lot of the impulse buying and toxic keeping up with the joneses type stuff came from those places. There’s a lot less rage bait in my life too, I highly recommend it.
It’s not just the ads and influencers, it’s also the hobbies and interest groups on FB. I’ve had to pull back from those as well. All feed consumerism and excess.
It was noticeable how much less I consume and how peaceful life became after I deleted all my social media. Even following your “friends” can influence you. Now I just follow a few RUclipsrs like you, to remind me of my good decision. Six years social media free and counting.
I recently had to unfollow some YT channels that made me feels sad or kinda jealous when I watched a video. The ones I deleted usually made me want to buy stuff they used or had, like clothes, books or organisation items.
Is it only me or is social media fatigue a thing? Idk I feel numb whenever I am scrollen and seing ads IDK social media is gettin lame, I feel overstimulated and not happy
i got to be honest lately social media been helping my buying habits lately. i was a hello kitty , kawaii fashion fan girl before it got massive on the internet and now everyone ruined it, just call TJ maxx the sanrio store now. Ill be honest back in 2019 the makeup pallets almost got me good, but i fell off quickly , now i dont wear makeup as heavy anymore
@@lixahxj its crazy how much opposite effect that had on me than you, maybe that i like being different , like when things get big and popular it somehow ruins if for me.
I was a Sanrio girlie myself, falling into the rabbit hole of excessive buying of cute Sanrio products from skincare to clothes because I would see the other Sanrio girlies buy it on TikTok (which I don’t have anymore). I even got the big Kuromi and My Melody purse from two Christmases ago. You wanna know what I do with it now? Nothing. I wore it to school ONCE and now that purse still sits on top of my closet never to see the light of day again. 💀
I have to agree like you this why I do not like kawaii culture anymore because it’s becoming super commodified to the point it looks like advertisements being pushed to us, all because we are weak over cute things.
I've been watching a lot of videos like this lately. I realized that almost all my purchases are impulsive and that I throw a lot of them away. And now every time I want to buy something, I stop myself and ask questions, especially if it's something popular on social media. To be honest, I'd really like to delete all social media, but I realize that I'll feel lonely and get the Fomo effect 😢
I definitely fell into the trap of impulse buying on social media before, but im much more mindful of it now. Starting to invest my money has also made me more vigilant about knowing when I start "craving" retail therapy.
I like that you deliver your information in one scene so to speak and you don't rely on cuts to make your video appear more cohesive. It makes your videos relaxing and way less stressful to watch (I go insane when I see those tiktok videos with a cut every 2 seconds). Anyhow. I'm being influenced by social media to buy an air fryer right now. But I reckon that is one of the better purchases I can make due to social media. Aside of that I wait before I buy something that I want on impulse. You probably also mentioned something like this in your videos before. Also I pause and evaluate if I want something or I need something. Most of the time it's something that I want obviously since my basic needs are mostly satisfied. If I notice that it's probably just a fleeting in-the-moment-want then I step back and don't buy it.
The point that the overall effect of consuming videos and pics of curated lives effects our spending behavior much more than sponsored ad posts makes so much sense!
I loved the video, although I haven’t personally been prey to impulse shopping. I’m more of analysing a product 10 times and seeing reviews before buying it 😅. The way social media affects my thoughts is interesting, a funny reel might uplift my mood sometimes!
One of the best things I learnt is to put stuff I need in my shopping cart when needed, that is how that "your cart is empty you can get atleast this" temptation is less cause you already have things you need in that cart.
i made a promise to myself when I was 18 to not follow influencers and I think its saved me so much sadness in the long run. ten years later I couldn't tell you who the biggest influencer is and I don't want anyone else's life. i like being on my path and taking inspiration from others but I think its kept me from having my own identity.
I wonder if in a hundred years we will look back on this era of content, advertising, and online shopping in the same way we look at the prior breakout industries. A new market and platform is created, one that is unregulated, and with seemingly limitless potential. It is sold to us as a revolutionary new way to both spend and earn money, and a narrative is born that this is the way of the future. This new market ends up consolidating wealth the same way it always does; ie. a few big players reap most of the benefit and a lot of smaller guys get screwed. The next step would be a crash in the market, and regulators coming in an making sweeping changes to prevent such a thing from every happening again... Until it does. Then a new hot new market will be created, and the cycle can repeat again. Today's ecosystem strikes me as similar to when gold was discovered in California, or when stock markets first gained popularity among working class, or the dot com bubble, or the housing bubble of 2008. I wonder if it will end the same way, a crash, the majority get screwed, and the big players hold the bag.
I loved your perspective on this especially the comparison w the gold rush, i have a similar theory, social media marketing is on the rise in 2nd and 3rd world countries while it has peaked in 1st world countries, once the 1st world gets done w it the other markets will also soon follow, what then what? Hey nicole. I'd love it if you adressed the issue of womens maintenance. I believe in sustainablity and invest in clothes and wear them for long. But recently i just got made fun for wearing the same clothes regularly. How much do you think its okay for women to spend on appearances? Would Love to know your pov thanks.
Sorry people made fun of you!!! In some places that’s normal, you’re definitely not the only one who takes care of their clothes for a long time and rewears them regularly 💕
I had someone comment on my repeating outfit recently. I just replied that I don’t know if I will fit into them in the future,so I might as well enjoy them as much as I can.
@@barbara9315 I commented on the person who was made fun of. But still awful that people pointed out you repeating outfits 😢. I wear the same outfits all the time and people are always nice about my clothes. I think you should wear what you like and not break the bank for a new outfit every day
I find myself mostly having the opposite reaction to social media ads, probably helps that I don't live in the US (and probably also helps that I'm an elder millennial), so a lot of the common conveniences people experience there is not really a thing here, or if it is it's a costly luxury. I find myself bombarded with ads from unknown sources, so my brain just assumes it's something bad. I assume there's some hidden cost, or that the offer is a scam of some kind (especially in the last couple of years my feed is filling up more and more with very scammy posts between the obvious ads), etc. So even if the item looks appealing to me, I find it pretty easy to scroll past it once I have looked at it.
Guilty of impulse spending I just spent 2k on clothes a few days ago. Tried to justify it by saying I reached my yearly fidelity 20k investment goal. I will be returning almost all of the stuff I bought come Monday. It was stupid of me to spend that much money on clothes.
we've all been there lesson learned maybe return half the haul? keep the pieces that work with the pieces you already owned before the most recent haul
hard agree with the no social media on the phone, it's great. I also belong to my local buy nothing group and will generally look there if I need something.
For me, social media affects my career decision-making. At first, i thought it was encouraging to see others run their business and their experiences in their vlogs. But now, i can see how these videos actually paralize and keep me in a rut. Some business owners also over glamourize their experiences which can be misleading. Without good enough knowledge ,you can easily end up spending money on tools and equipment , but then end up feeling too overwhelmed to start. Reading books on how to run a business are more helpful.
Just wait until AI and the algorithm team up to create perfect ads at the perfect time 🤔 My best tip: put a time limit on all social media via screen time (20 min per day)
Cara, i think a cool video concept for the future would be how to find local community in the anti-consumerism movement. i’m sure you know as well as i do that having strong feelings about the consumption of the average American can be a bit ostracizing, and some sort of activism or meetup group would be interesting.
It's not that I will buy things but sometimes I will get distracted by stopping to look at what's being advertised. However I am getting better though.
This was such a great interpretation of how we spend money in our current age. I am 100% guilty of all. I am definitely going to be a lot more conscious of my online consumption.
I have such a love/hate relationship with targeted ads. I have to use willpower and discernment on a daily basis because things that actually do look interesting to me are thrown in my face every day. But sometimes it is nice to see different product options that are so specific to my taste, because I wouldn't have found them otherwise. Another aspect of it, in my experience, is that it's just fun to get stuff in the mail. 😆 There's definitely a novelty aspect to it, where I'm getting something that I ordered delivered to me and I get to see what I think of it. But then, like many other people, if I end up with something I don't like, I struggle to return it. Because what a hassle! 😅
I absolutely hate Meta for not taking down scam advertisements because it's simply not profitable to them. Whenever I see some obviously dangerous ad I report it, and of course in a couple of minutes I get a notification that "we checked the ad and haven't found anything that violates our rules". Can't even imagine how many older people fall for some AI-generated ads with Elon Musk that promises them thousand of dollars daily, and it makes me sick that corporations do nothing about it
I used to be a serial makeup hoarder following what’s new i’m so glad I got out of that mindset. although, skincare is something I invested products that my skin is already used to.
Thank you. This was very thoughtful. I have BPD, and one of my main impulses is just... spending. Ugh. The amount of money I have been spending just because I saw it on social media makes me feel shameful.
I developed a habit where if I want something that I see advertised to me, I’ll put it in my notes app ( an app I rarely go into) and if it’s something on my mind a lot for a couple days or weeks later, then I’ll buy it. 99% of the time.. I don’t buy it. Lol. Because it was an impulse and not something I actually wanted/needed
yup.. your account knows what kind of ads will pop up.. bc I search different kinds of things in the internet for christmas gifts for example.. then all of the ads come at me all at once.. like it knows what kind of products you're looking for... its kinda scary..
Only having Instagram, following people I know & creative people has made enjoyable. I feel like everyone that's creative are looking to sell you their products but they've put work into their passion. And sometimes they'll try to sell you other things,😂
1. Only own a debit card. Can't spend money you *literally* don't have 2. Be cheap and only buy stuff you truly need 🤷🏻♀️ do you actually need a new t-shirt just because it comes in a new shade etc? 3. Get a closet app. Look at what you actually use. Go through the rest to either recycle or donate
I don't buy clothes/ shoes/ perfume/ makeup online as I need to try them. That's my rule because I find it more trouble to return the items if I don't like them on me or don't fit me.
No keep talking about the Kar-Jenners. Few things make me happier and gossip and critique about them. I'm not a fan of them, but I am happy there is something I can spend my anger on x)
I am only on insta sporadically, and the ads are not very targeted because I only use it for sports interests and the ads are inherently biased towards that target demographic (let's just say I am not the target audience for beard oil lol). Otherwise, when I see something I like, I might click and open an external tab, but then I switch to my notes app, add it to my wishlist, and an hour later I've probably forgotten about it already. If it sticks with me for a long time even without looking at the wishlist, I might go back and consider an actual purchase a while later. It's like delayed gratification without completely restricting myself from feeling excited about something, because I will be able to tell if that excitement continues to linger even after having slept on it and thought about it several times 😊
parents taught me from a young age to sleep on it if i wanted something. if i woke up amd wanted it, then consider how much use will i get out of it, is it going to collect dust, is the price worth the product. it disgusts me how much people buy. i much prefer bartering and free stuff people throw away. they throw away new $100-400 things! its insane!
And this is why I have both ad block and sponsorblock on both my PC and laptop and intentionally ignore billboards around me. Ads infuriate me to no end. Garbage products from garbage companies sold to braindead sheep.
I appreciate all this sentiment, although the proliferation of these videos providing warnings and advice on how to deal with the known downsides of Social Media compels me to ask ... Why don't more of them simply advise you to GET OFF SOCIAL MEDIA? These things are addictive, poisonous, and invasive. They are designed to overpower all the good and well-intentioned advice in this video and others. Perhaps the only durably successful move is to LEAVE FOR GOOD
It is possible to use TikTok very smart. I follow intelligent interest and hobbies of mine and it truly enrich my life. It all depends on how you train the AI
I don't understand how people need to buy things they see online. Can you just not decide without being influenced if you need something? Don't get me wrong, i get ideas also from videos, hm that is cool, might be useful, or something similar could help with a specific problem, but it does not mean i am buying it without thinking over or researching it. Mostly i save the idea and try to do it with resources i have. For example: i have seen a cool table to play puzzle on,with small drawers where you can sort your puzzle. Oh, i definitely would use it, but my first reaction was to save the picture and ask my husband how can we DIY it...
It's a myth that your phone is listening to you and giving you ads based on that, you just don't realise the sheer amount of information you willingly give and the information that can be gleaned from seemingly innocuous pieces of info. The speech recognition tech needed for Alexa/google home etc is still not that great so having every phone constantly recording and reporting back on things simply isn't possible.
Cara if you lived in Denver I’d ask you on a date. In all seriousness though thanks for the videos keep them coming ❤ the more anxiety I feel over spending money the less I’ll do it lol
I committed to making better final decisions this summer and had to delete TikTok because the TikTok shop is SO good at showing me things I want. The algorithm is way too accurate and way too advertisy for me now. I couldn’t scroll for more than 4 times without seeing an ad for something I would like.
I tell my daughter that influencers are people that sell stuff over the internet. “Like my life buy this dress and you can feel like me” I tell her it’s a lie.
I tell my daughter that they are people that sell stuff over the internet. “Like my life buy this dress and you can feel like me” I tell her it’s a lie.
I hate to say this, but I feel like I have an advantage in avoiding this cycle, because I'm an autistic trans person and I've been fat my whole life; I am not the target audience for 90% of these ads and these lifestyles. I'm also very self aware at my big age of 30 when it comes to my aesthetic preferences and style; I'm just not as impacted by any of this as, say, a pretty, skinny, allistic 22 year old cis girl who gained the freshman fifteen might be.
No Facebook account for 2 years (and counting). No Instagram account since April of this year. Was never active on Tiktok or Snapchat either. Life has been great. 😌 RUclips, you're next. 🙈

Hi Cara. Can you make one about "Friendagiving"? You know buying everything twice in one week, one for Thanksgiving and one fot Friendsgiving
Cara dropping gems of wisdom 💎 Thank you!!
yup.. your account knows what kind of ads will pop up.. bc I search different kinds of things in the internet for christmas gifts for example.. then all of the ads come at me all at once.. like it knows what kind of products you're looking for... its kinda scary..
good timing w black friday right around the corner
And this video is interrupted by advertisements.
we live in a society
Only having Instagram, following people I know & creative people has made enjoyable. I feel like everyone that's creative are looking to sell you their products but they've put work into their passion. And sometimes they'll try to sell you other things,😂
❤
As always a great well thought out video that kept me entertained and was easy on the eyes and ears!!!! Great job!
I'm italian and barely know kardashan, they are not so famous over there😅 (but we have other big influencer like Ferragnez)
1. Only own a debit card. Can't spend money you *literally* don't have
Yeah. I really don’t want to hear about them anymore. Ugh. I get it though. 😑
Excellent video as always girl! Happy holidays! 🦃🎄
A very interesting video and topic! I just wished the background music was less loud.
parents taught me from a young age to sleep on it if i wanted something. if i woke up amd wanted it, then consider how much use will i get out of it, is it going to collect dust, is the price worth the product. it disgusts me how much people buy. i much prefer bartering and free stuff people throw away. they throw away new $100-400 things! its insane!
Congrats on your new Icy Cones machine Cara
And this is why I have both ad block and sponsorblock on both my PC and laptop and intentionally ignore billboards around me. Ads infuriate me to no end. Garbage products from garbage companies sold to braindead sheep.
Absolute power move 😎
Thank you, Cara Divine
I have the bilt mastercard and I love it.
My parents tried to teach us not to be impulsive shoppers with the waiting for a week or so timeline 😂
Tbh. I’m poor because I have bad spending habit - with or without social media lol
I have Instagram but I mainly use it to follow sewing tips and funny parents videos
Always do your research. Most of the advertised stuff is shit, and you WILL find yt videos and similar information exposing it.
Basically, the Kardashians keep us poor so eff em
Pinterest is shameless
I tell my daughter that influencers are people that sell stuff over the internet. “Like my life buy this dress and you can feel like me” I tell her it’s a lie.
The scrolling keeps showing us the Big Money Spenda's.
Vinted is my downfall
I tell my daughter that they are people that sell stuff over the internet. “Like my life buy this dress and you can feel like me” I tell her it’s a lie.
I feel like I've seen your face all over ads or maybe you have a twin out there
Totally agree unless it’s Pepto it can wait a week 🤣
I hate to say this, but I feel like I have an advantage in avoiding this cycle, because I'm an autistic trans person and I've been fat my whole life; I am not the target audience for 90% of these ads and these lifestyles. I'm also very self aware at my big age of 30 when it comes to my aesthetic preferences and style; I'm just not as impacted by any of this as, say, a pretty, skinny, allistic 22 year old cis girl who gained the freshman fifteen might be.
Isn't this a re-upload?
no, i've never posted this video before!
everyone like spending money
todo mundo gosta de gastar dinheiro
everyone likes to spend money
No Facebook account for 2 years (and counting). No Instagram account since April of this year. Was never active on Tiktok or Snapchat either. Life has been great. 😌
RUclips, you're next. 🙈
9 minutes, man.
Its been a year since i deleted instagram and Im happy for it to stay this way lol
One snowcone machine richer. Ha!
Damn I'm glad to be a guy
Doesnt it affect men in a way?
@Nisan-v6h I guess not, huh?
It does. My 34 yo brother is more affected than his sister and many of my cousins too
Arent the sponsors for your videos also keeping us poor meaning - YOU, Cara, are keeping us poor? How the turns table
😂😂😂
The irony of a RUclips video called "How Social Media Keeps You Poor" being interrupted by an ad for a credit card scheme.
This video is loud af
ok but tate mcrae tho lol
