  • My first grocery haul video for my family of five on a budget. Now that I am staying home full time and just starting my bakery business, we are tightening our budget even more. This is what I buy living below the poverty line. Let me know what you spend in your area and if you think this is a good amount of food for the money.

    Good shopping! It looks like lots of healthy food. I have not added up how much we spend monthly for groceries in NC. We have a 27 year old male who eats lots of calories, myself (a vegetarian who does gluten-free), and my mother who is also vegetarian. Unfortunately, we probably pay too much because we all have very different tastes in food.

      Having different dietary needs would increase your bill that is for sure! And having to cook every day is a lot too. But it definitely saves money! Thank you for your comment!

    I buy meat substitutes too, along with « real » meat. We don’t eat meat everyday either !)
    I’m always looking for new ways and recipes for those plant- based products, aside from scrambled tofu , and Asian ~garlic and ginger~ tofu recipes ( which often involve too much sugar).
    Congrats for trying to get organic products as much as you can on a budget ! Yes, Aldi has some of those at a more affordable price!
    Wishing that you could share Seitan recipe 😊 !

      It is so much more sustainable when using less meat! Of course our children are small and I know it will cost more once they are eating more! Aldi is really great though! I haven't made Seitan in quite some time. I need to find a recipe again. But the Tempeh bacon is GREAT and very simple to make! My recipe is: 1 package tempeh cut into strips, place is food storage container with a lid. Pour this marinade over it: 3 Tbl Tamari, 2 Tbl Maple syrup, 1 Tbl olive oil generous dash of garlic powder, 2 Tsp liquid smoke, 1.5 tsp balsamic vinegar. Let marinate in the fridge a few hours or up to a week. You can cook a few pieces at a time if you like and just keep it marinating until you want to eat it. Fry it is a little olive oil.

    Thank you for the tempeh recipe ! I’ll use it ! I saw that they are now selling tempeh at our local Winco here in California. It is exciting to see more and more vegan protein alternatives in our regular grocery stores nowadays. I could never find any of those other than in health food stores before !
