Hellbent needs to sell the IP to other developers, the amount of cut content could've breathed new life into the game and put it up there with all the other asyms. Sadly Hellbent will never do it and would rather do nothing with it like EA with Alice.
This is the only game where I've actually grieved its loss, to the point where idk if I can even watch this documentary, I'm sorry, I'll leave it running in the background on mute or something, this game is how I found you
Hashtag im still here pls make more deepdives onto this game dude its so interesting to see what happened behind the scenes and what you thought could have have fixed or turned things around
The VHS devs were essentially handed the golden ticket for a new style of an asym to fill a void that will never be filled by games like dbd. Having the 4 be able to fight back works well provided the 1 is having a good time. And that is where Hellbent took the golden ticket, ripped it up and then took a dump on it. They were so clearly against game experience for monsters that it bamboozles me to this day. I can only think the devs loved playing on comms with each other and took it in turns to be monster, which works for a group of friends, but not public matches. VHS will go down in history as one of the biggest flops possible for a game. (and no I didn't suck at monster, I had a 90% w/r with wart, so as Jae says, it isn't a skill issue, it is the stress and feel of the gameplay)
To this day VHS is the only asym I actually miss playing and literally tried them all. Really miss it. I still believe Dollmaster is the best designed monster in an asym, aesthetics and gameplaywise (and he wasn't even my fav to play as!) The fact that this game died is truly a tragedy.
One more thing I think VHS missed was an “m2” monster. In dbd we have a lot of killers which play different with their powers like huntress being able to play mid and long range, demo and wesker dashing through the map, billy running everywhere, etc. Hits in VHS to my experience, didn’t really felt rewarding, in a mechanical way. You could make a macro outplay, but there was little room for a micro game outplay, the closest thing to that was Deathwire with it’s shot, and even that didn’t feel really hard to get since it could go through walls and charged too fast to require a micro outplay from the monster side
Just sounds like the devs suck at making a game when there’s literally a successful one in the same genre. People copy each other all the time, we call it “inspiration”.
Pretty good video, liked listening to it in the background while I work. Perhaps for a future subject for a "podcast style" video could be a "If I made an asym game". Where it would be your own ideas for a hypothetical asym game, you had some pretty cool killer ideas that if I'm being frank kinda departed a bit from the 80s style VHS had. I've been playing asym games for many years now and I certainly got ideas of my own, but I'd be interested in listening to what ideas you'd have and what a hypothetical perfect asym game could be.
I feel like a dynamic shield would have been great. It starts off small at the beginning of the game and after each stigma it gets a percentage stronger
I miss VHS so much it was such a great game and came at a great time for me. I had been in the beta since early December 2021 and about to move in with my boyfriend. I spent the rest of my beta time and early access release in a good place with good memories before he passed in January of 2023 by that point i had over 600 hours in the game so i will always hold it dear to my heart as being a great time in my life and I wish it had been able to stick around longer and gave us plenty more joy!
I have the most fond memories of any game with this game here. I miss it so much. I hope for a comeback of some sort. It would have a small, dedicated fanbase no matter what.

You were saying not to worry about balance and I think its safe to say they didn't care about it for the majority of the game's life cycle which is why people stopped playing it. They knew in the beta that monster wasn't fun to play and they made so little progress on it until the end. They also never fixed the audio issues.

Solo Q unfortunately made Dollmaster and Wart incredibly annoying for last stigma. I don't know if I'd enjoy the shield thing tbh, but I also don't know how'd you'd fix it without removing grouping up, which would not be great for obvious reasons.
It will never happen but really wish the game would make a comeback somehow. Don’t even remember how I found the game but console would have helped the community survive for a lot longer but they never made it. Best game that could have been for sure.
Loved all your ideas but for the magician instead of the acid, I’d have it so his last ability is if he hits a teen hit places a coin behind their ear and that’s his tracking the only way to get rid of it is to have another teen remove it acid may be better tho 😅
I really liked playing against Dollmaster, it was difficult but rewarding. I really absolutely hated going against Deathwire. All the slowdown was so ass, I just hate when games do that. I really miss VHS. And all the money I put in..

I followed this game for ages but when it finally came out it ok but had serious balance issues. I also never cared for it's toned down violence which does not fit with the 80's aesthetic since every horror flick out of that time period of note was 24/7 ultra violence. It feels like it was designed by people who only watched stranger things for reference and stranger things is just "How hipsters remember the 80's" the tv show. If you relaunched this game and did nothing but tone up the violence and swap the kids out for college students and 80's horror stereotypes it would be infinitely more fun.
