Please note that while this was made on my new custom Mario 64 engine, the engine is not 100% finished yet and you could experience some bugs (some even seen in this video). I'm still working on perfecting it. This will be very valuable playtest data!
really wanna see you hack Majora's mask kirby 64 and banjo kazooie
oh and don't forget donkey kong 64!
new idea:sandbox area you can use breakable blocks available in vanilla to make a 5x5 box of these blocks with gaps in the middle these gaps hide goombas coins and Bob ombs
kaze make the best mario 64 romhack
Mario behaves oddly when his head touches ceilings. He also pretty often gets into this weird unrecoverable fall type, where you can't dive or ground pound and movement is severely limited. Usually happens when he's moving slightly backwards after a slide, possibly after a botched dive recover. More recovery options in general would be nice, to be able to break out of a bunch of locked-in states (long-jump, for instance). A lot of scenarios where you wind up in what I call a "Castlevania Fall" with very little influence over direction/momentum.
I swear I looked at Only Up and thought 'this would be way more fun if it was Mario 64'.
And here it is. Amazing work! Time to climb 20% of the way, fall and then give up, wish me luck!
Glad im not the only one with that insane thought process
nice seeing you here

I wish we had a Kaze Emanuar-level modder for every major retro game :(
The amount and quality of content this man has produced for mario 64 is unbelievable.
well, at least banjo kazooie has Mark Kurko!
What would really be amazing is if he released a level-editing tool. There was something like that a long time ago for OOT. Forgot what it was called.
we are starting to see a bit more of this for gamecube and WII game as well as some others. Maybe with some more time we will have Kaizo Everything

Maybe BLJ + hyperjump
Its not possible to TAS this game at all since once you load a savestate you get a stupid message saying no cheating and it fucks with your controls so its pretty much impossible to TAS anything here.

Shoutouts to Rovert for announcing this hack's release before Kaze
This is a certified Rovert moment
One thing I noticed in the PSX vs N64 days is how much of an easier time N64 had with scaling and rotation. It’s FAST. This level takes great advantage of it.
N64 was just better at 3D all around - except its tiny texture cache
@@clebbington yeah the textures were it’s biggest weakness
@@clebbington I was thinking about it, I think the ROM size was also a detriment. ROM chips were expensive and PSX had tons of ROM (read-only memory) on the CD by comparison. And CDs were magnitudes cheaper than ROM chips. They tried to amend that with 64DD but it was too late.
@@alainchristiann64 was also harder to develop for
@@alainchristianyes PS1 won the generation because of choosing compact disc. ff7 was 3 or 4 discs. Choosing cartridge over compact disc meant N64 games couldn't have video or MP3 audio, a big failure at the time, and it made N64 way harder to develop for. I had both PS1 and N64, loved both. Swapped my PS1 for a 64 with a school friend or vice versa (can't remember which I had first) so got the chance for both.
Now I wanna see what it’s like to jump from the top of the level all the way down to the bottom…
Kaze's custom mario looks so clean, I love the level of detail he puts into everything
It’s missing the occasional voice clip about living in the favelas or having a father that beats you. 10/10
I find it kinda ironic that this genre of game only took off after only up came out and not when the much higher quality getting over it did.
I agree that GOI was a way more inspired game just by nature of the unique controls. Of course there's a lot more than just a game's artistic value that determines how popular it is--for some reason the RUclips algorithm *really* likes serving me Only Up videos even though I've only watched a small number of them.
When he almost slid off that DK I almost shit my pants. What a save.
only up good version
ok between the fever dream levels of basophobia, to exploring my entire childhood video game library in a virtual physical space juxtaposition- this is an absolute trip. That evocation of a specific spectrum of feeling is what art hopes to acheive.
I remembered Only Up had quotes read in AI to you when you reach certain points, but imagine getting Vincent of Vinesauce to read out some random quotes in his Mario voice as well 👀
would become the only decent go up type game
Vinny quotes for progress, simpleflips for failure. Falling all the way down and just hearing "YOU LIKE SUCKIN BAWLS MARIO?"
@@JollySwaggmann"gay baby jail for you"
@@JollySwaggmann could have Vinny mixed in for failures too. "Y U NO PLEJ DMCTOO BINYOT?"
That would be amazing
It would've blown my mind to see Taj or Wizpig in there in tribute to DKR
I hope you all enjoyed the music!! 😀 Great work Kaze!
Assuming you're implying you're responsible for the music,I'll sub to give you the credit you deserve.
@@nathan-qcueparsons268 thank you Nathan! That is indeed my music - I use AI to generate tracks and then I master and mix them myself
The music is phenomenal and I love it! Do you have a link to the track used in this hack?
@@Ms.Microcurie Thank you! bottom of Kaze's description ^^^ only place you can find it :D
@@musicbyai64 totally missed it, thank you so much! 😊
This feels like Randomized Realm from B3313 if the AI was gigabrained.
This is crazy!
I'm honestly surprised the SM64 coordinate system can handle this. As well as handleing all those textures without running out of memory.
This is running on a emulator though so the system specs are higher, and more things can be done.
@@ihavetubes in the first 15 seconds of the video he mentions the near consistent 60fps on a real nintendo 64. (50~60fps)
@@KitsuneFuzzyWorth reminding people that this man has extensively simplified, reworked, and optimized most (basically all) of SM64's code
Kaze’s engine is a Theseus Ship of the SM64 source code
@@ihavetubes Give this man one more video to make it run on a actual N64
I love this! Everything you make has insane levels of detail and effort. Cant wait for the next devlog!
Little splice around the 6:00, 9:30 marks, but all good because being clear in the description (plus no NFT ad). Not everything needs to be a vetted run anyway.
Nice one Kaze.
that was just a recording issue. there are genuine skips in the video but they are very clear 1 second fade in/fade outs.
@@KazeN64 No worries, I just noticed and assumed they may have been the parts you said you cheated since I was commenting while watching. I'll stop adding the timestamps since I'm not looking to know the context behind any of them in full.
Have a great day, duder.
With the "thrown together assets" aesthetic, the vertical climb, and the difficulty, this really reminds me of Getting Over It. You could've probably branded it as such, had this released a few years back, and it would've fit quite nicely in my opinion. Either way, this looks awesome! Great job on this project!
I feel like that was the point
He already made a Getting Over It hack a few years back, it's called Getting Over It with Nathaniel Bandy.
Only Up was clearly inspired by getting over it, as were many other spin-offs. It has a massive lineage at this point
I take it you were not aware of the Only Up game prior to the video, but its entirely based on that
@@westomopresto which is entirely based on getting over it
i love how the noises that turning camera makes fits so well with the music
Awsome stuff. Thanks for putting this together Kaze. The models from all different N64 games was a nice touch!
9:07 Give it a name: The jump that breaks the fabric of space time itself, or the bug jump
seriously what was that lmao
This makes me appreciate the texture work Nintendo did at the time.
Most textures used in Mario 64 arent made by Nintendo, they used a bunch of textures others released for use.
@@CrazyDoodEpicLeaves... And had to line it properly with the low polygon objects and entity when rendered to properly convey an artstyle with a console limited by the standards of the good old days.
Ergo, i appreciate their texture work. This isn't new, the video game industry used several types of libraries that had free to use samples or were simply copyright free. Including and especially sound design.
@@ProsecutorValentine I wasn't complaining at all, its obvious they would use libraries, why shouldn't they! It's just that I wanted to clarify that, incase somebody didn't know.
@@CrazyDoodEpicLeaves Fair.
Way more vertex coloring than "textures".
Didn't think I'd get to see Super Mario mounting Bomberman today, but here we are.
All that sliding on slopes reminded me of something, those fps surf style maps. Have anyone tried to make a level like that on the Mario engine? Is that even possible? That would be a cool idea for a custom level, keeping up your sliding momentum on ramps and avoiding falling of the map.
Honestly would be a banger idea
"Only Down" - it sells itself!
The physics of sliding down slopes is a bit more like those surf maps when you're riding a koopa shell, so it might be possible.
There's something symbolic about Mario climbing higher than everyone else on the console. Even himself. Wahoo!
This is kinda something I do get about games like Only Up. If you're gonna make a whole game about climbing some massively tall pile-up of structures, you should make the character movement fun so it's not too terrible getting back to where you were!
This is a great mod.
Damn, the tracks you're playing are awesome. Love the chords. Great job with the hack too!
Crazy good project and execution, congrats again Kaze!
should have jumped from the top so we could taste the ultimate fear lol
The textures used for the N64 were so limited, but at least they're better than blatantly using NFTs.
This is so freaking impressive. Like... woah. Can't wait to see more games from you!!
Man the music is so chill. Thanks for including the link Kaze ❤ you're the best
Wow. How did you even fit that much static geometry (and texture handles!) into 8MB of work-RAM? Are there vertical transition barriers that cue an overlapping scene mesh to load in from ROM and then seamlessly swap out for the active scene mesh?
I truly believe this man could pull off an in-engine recreation of the old "Nintendo ON" demo (the one where they make a castle outdoor scene out of tiny tiled castle outdoor scenes.) Probably by porting Unreal Engine's Nanite mesh system to the RCP. ;)
What’s this Nintendo ON thing?
I want to look it up, but I know damn well that the only things I’m going to get through Google is switch online things.
25k polygons? If I recall correctly that's more polygons than the main area of delfino plaza in sunshine, which raises some interesting questions. Would feel like the ultimate test of your optimized engine to try and get super mario sunshine assets running on the Nintendo 64, even with (obviously) simplified textures and certain limitations it would be very cool to see.
If you're willing to occupy an arbitrarily large amount of cartridge space, require the Expansion Pak, have scaled-down textures, and accept pretty aggressive culling of objects based on distance, there's no reason you couldn't have levels from Gamecube or Wii games on the N64.
Kaze already did this, but the project was never fully completed. You can google it.
You know what would be cool? The entirety of Paldea (including the Crater) on the N64.
This is amazing. I wish there was a little more variation in the skyboxes as you ascend.
the lack of NFTs makes this 100% better than the OG only up
Love Kaze for casually creating master pieces. Super Mario 64 is perfect for this concept.
4:52 nice save
14:08 nice save 2
23:47 nice save 3
The sparks for first framing tricks is such a small yet gratifying detail
The music and little talking make this video so very relaxing… it’s probably great to go to sleep to.
This whole thing reminded me of Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy 😂
Yep! As someone else mentioned Kaze is also behind Getting Over It With Nathaniel Bandy, which is more of a direct tribute, while this one capitalizes on the more recent (but similarly designed) Only Up. So it's sort of a spiritual grandchild of GOI.
Totally insane! 😁 Must have taken a while to Order the models perfectly, so that it is managable AND a challenge at the same time! 👍🏻 Would be cool to have some kind of transparent progressmeter, how high you already got. Would also be cool, if the Background would change slowly, from clouds to the stars and finally far in the distant space. Is the music ingame or part of editing? Would be great to have themed music depending in where you are. :) Great work nontheless! 💯
music is editing, I'm pretty sure
The second i saw "only up" i had this idea. Props to you for seeing it through!
Thanks for posting. I look forward to playing the complete game after your amazing mods... been watching for a while...
The music is so damn good. How have I seen no-one mention this?
Yeah, seriously worth sticking around just to hear it.
Apparently it's ai generated.
@@gammaboost That really sucks - it sounds surprisingly structured and coherent but I guess that just means it sounds suspiciously like some other piece of music somewhere that we now can't source.
Downtempo deep house?
@@SproutyPottedPlant basically yeah
I don't know why, but something about this feels like something you'd see in a dream. What an excellent little ROM hack this is!
Excellent work. Thanks for your time and dedication!
Pretty amazing! Can't wait to see the speedruns!
Take Mario's model for the first step.
And put him in a tower filled with N64 assets
This and Smash Remix are a celebration of the N64 and its modding scene. This couldnt have been made for any other generation due to the polygonal nature of the models.
Psychologist: All dreams have a meaning
My dreams:
the camera turn sounds fit really well with the music!
I already know people will speedrun the hell out of this
Thank you so much for making this! "Only Up" with Mario's physics is a perfect match!
I can only imagine the focus and patience that this must have took. Amazing upload 👏🏾 Also the music is 🔥
Absolutely incredible work as always Kaze
Any time I saw this game, all I could think about was how it might not suck ass if it was a SM64 rom hack
I love this project, and I'm happy you made it, but I'm super conflicted because while I really wanna experience this level in a visual playthrough, I definitely want to see it done by someone that streams (in my case, simpleflips the goat). I think you deserve the watchtime, respect and ad-sense/credit for making this. Do you have any kind of one-time donation stuff? I don't fancy myself a Patreon user but I'd love to at least contribute something.
I think you could become a youtube member as well
i also dislike memberships i.e. subscription payments. I much prefer one-time payment options like paypal donations as well
There's a thanks button below the video that makes your comment stand out with the amount of money you donated. Not sure what the revenue split on that is though
There's a merch link in the description. Give money, get something in return.
Patreon makes it really easy to cancel. I've done it quite a few times in the past where I toss a favorite creator $5 or whatever, immediately cancel, and enjoy whatever the perks are for a month.
Unfortunately for creators like Kaze that are stuck in the grey areas of BS copyright laws, the best they can get away with nowadays is a minimally censored platform like Patreon. He's personally had his Paypal and other more direct streams of revenue frozen / stolen from him multiple times.
I can see this being background footage to the credits of some Nintendo anniversary game as an homage to Nintendos games,I know theyd never do something like this, but i can see ot fitting in my head.
A beautiful celebration of N64's library
This is going to make for a good Vinesauce stream.
Now do one where you don't get the star, but instead walk past it and ground pound off the edge into the giant abyss ;)
those jump-stomp attack-dive saves are crazy
Took 4 hours to beat it, but I finally did it. Great romhack as always, you're amazing Kaze!
"For most of you guys, I suggest watching it instead of playing it... Leave it to the professionals. Trust me, your life will be better."
I'm just leaving this here so I can remind myself that I was indeed warned when I lose my mind five hours from now.
This is very impressive and looks better than Only Up itself. Also Mario's model in this game reminds me of the Mario from the original Mario Party games.
Mario Party Mario was a bit skinnier but man was not messing around when it came to drip
i'm just over here listening to mario's cries of "yahoo!" in background while i work
gotta be loving the quieter camera sounds
One of the strangest rom hacks ever made
*Powered by Kaze 64 Engine*
Great work! I think If only the N64 was more intelligently designed, which it was possible at the time, you could have been doing super solid 60fps
This is remarkable! Looks very challenging!
Fantastic video, almost asmr and pretty nostalgic.
I totally thought that the camera moving sound effect was part of the background music lmao
Your work never ceases to amaze me. Using other n64 games is so smart
I'm loving the way this camera moves
This is incredible! I will definitely try this
0:30 nice to know that he isn't oblivious to what only up is!
Seeing the mashup of SM64 mario running around freely in 3D on the smash bros stages was like something out of a childhood dream haha
This reminds me of Mario 64 dreams that i used to have. Endless new levels to explore each night.
I've experienced this except with majora's mask despite having played mario 64 so much more
You guys are doin stuff we only dreamed about when we played these games back then.
I beat this from blind w/o savestating in around 4 hours, and I have to say I forgot you had the ground pound dive and twirl in your modified engine for most of that time.
After 3 1/2 hours I got to the foot of the Mario model at the very end just using the vanilla moveset, and I had no clue what way to jump to get past it. Any tries to buttslide up the steep slopes of his leg would make me eject from the slope instead, and I was incredibly confused on how to climb up. Eventually I stumbled into realizing you had those movement mechanics in, and I got up to Mario's knee with a twirl.
There were a lot of painful falls through my playthrough, but the whole thing was kind of a fun puzzle of movement tech all the way up.
Oh that's pretty cool! I have made sure that you don't need any of the new moves to beat this (so using them is kind of akin to playing in a lower difficulty) but making it to mario's foot without them in just a few hours is pretty good.
In the video here I'm showcasing how to beat everything without marios new moves so anyone could copy those strats.
I watched the video only after completing it, and it's kinda funny the differences in how I approached jumps throughout the banjo-kazooie section. I double-backflipped up the chair, same with the thin pillar at the start of the section. then at 22:33 especially, I did that jump by longjumping the gap and landing to a halt. (somehow never failed it)
you could figure out what kind of player someone is by the movement they use, haha.
Fun update: I played it again and recorded it this time! A whole 40 minutes of climbing the level with vanilla movement, so you can tell I fell once or twice, lol
Well, the "happyhayppyhappy" song is gonna haunt my nightmares for years to come.
There's so much history you've put in here!
Awesome mod man! Thanks for sharing this
Man the amount of close calls in this
really cool man. Could even be a streaming/video sensation. It's cool climbing up all this trippy Nintendo IP
daaaaamn this is epic, I wanna see some speedruns go down.
Should definitely do more of these, SM64 Kaizo sounds like such a sick subgenre
there are already a LOT of kaizo romhacks
How dare you turn this into such a nostalgia ride?? Kazooie looks like a origami bird at this scale lol.
New Kaze name pronunciation just dropped
Awesome idea for a hack! I absolutely love the idea of one big climb… I can’t even bring myself to watch the rest of the video cause I gotta try it myself one day.
There’s a possibility I might regret saying that, but if I do I’ll be back to watch the rest :)
Is the music I hear in the video the in-game music?
