  • The Best Rig For Big Fish From The Shore - The Dongle Rig
    This video explains the principles behind the dongle rig and how it works. Also how to build a couple of different versions and how to bait the rig properly. This rig will work for rays, stingrays, bass, bluefish, shark, drum, grouper, cod, halibut etc etc.

    I got into pulley rigs and Imp clips for casting reasons to stop the helicopter effect of a usual Paternoster rig .Then found the Imp clip wouldnt take the 8/0 hooks for Mulloway.....mmmmmm.....down on the beach brain storm snell a hook with long tag end with the spring clip off a swivel on the tag end to go into the release part of the Imp clip....necessity....mother ..invention moment that Im sure some South African Cob fisho came up with 20 yrs ago! Hi, I would just like to say thank-you for taking the time to make the two videos on dongle rigs. I made up 8 before I fished a very snaggy mark with boulders and a whole load of kelp. I’ve used various rigs in the past with various success but this rig was by far the best I’ve used. I didn’t lose any rigs I did lose 4 weights but managed almost a fish a cast including a 9 1/2lb Huss, congers to 8lb and even a rockling and pout believe it or not! 🎣👍

      @@gsp Hi, I’ve been fishing the north coast of Devon. One thing I have noticed with the rig is that the weak link line of 20-30lb mono has been wrapping around the hook length loads and can take many minutes to unwind. I did also try amnesisia 20lb which did the same. Any suggestions? I’ve been using yuki 80lb fluorocarbon as my hook length. Thanks in advance

    Like te rig thank you. My concern would be fish not hitting the hook but only the dongle but I've never tried it. If for example I was to make a sausage of crab bait with elastic and then just hooking it through one end I believe it would be presented in a similar way but equally I understand that the benefit of the rig is that all the pressure is on the hook snood not the weight. It's all confidence at the end of the day and it clearly does work I just wonder if the hook up rate would be the same presenting it in this way against the bait being directly on the hook. Many thanks

    • @gsp
      @gsp  2 года назад

      I would really only use this rig when fishing massive baits for massive fish. A fish thats going to swalllow the bait whole and in tje situation where you need the really heavy hook snood. In the uk, from the shore i would probably only use it for tope, big congers and skate

    • @redtobertshateshandles
      @redtobertshateshandles Год назад

      Here in Australia this would catch Snapper and Mulloway. The bait being on the dongle makes no difference. The fish inhale the bait.

    Very interesting, I've already got a number of pre made wire circle hook rigs with a swivel that I originally got for deadbaiting pike but I found the wire they used to be a bit too heavy. I threw them in my sea tackle and occasionally throw them on a paternoster for bull huss or bass when something too small to eat swallows a hook but they can be a pain to put any other bait on since it's a circle hook. Honestly I never would have thought of "hair rigging" on that scale but I'll definitely be giving this a shot, seems like a really nice simple rig for playing big fish with the mainline direct to the swivel like that so all I'd need to do is tie on a weight link to the swivel of the wire rigs I've already got and I can make up some dongles from cutting up pike traces I have in the old junk tackle bag that are kinked or have bent out hooks etc. Cheers for the video mate, it's always good to find new techniques to try out, half the fun of fishing after all

    • @gsp
      @gsp  3 года назад

      Exactly! Very simple for you to convert and a very effective rig. This rig is used alot in South Africa for all the big species fished at distance and if all fishermen use it out there with the amount of big fish they have then it has to work well👍

      Basically yes but it's alot more than that. It allows you to clip the weight up and fish very light lead link with a heavy hook link direct to the fish. It allows for a lot of different size baits to be used too. It also protects the hook length from shark teeth

    Great video. Can the dongle be used with big baits on a pulley rig. I noticed on the rig you made the rig body was longer so it made a loop so when the bait was clipped down the rig body wasn't touching the bait. I believe this is the main system anglers use in South Africa. The problem I can see with the pulley is that the rig body will still be touching the bait. Just wondering if there is away to make the rig body slack on a puuley rig

    • @gsp

      Honestly I wouldn't recommend a single rig if your fishing with worms. The main aim of this rig is to allow casting of a big big bait on the breaking strain of the hook length as opposed to the lead link.
      If your aim is just to hair rig a worm to a different rig I'd personally prefer it on a hook as there is more hold🤔

  • @jasonbaker3447
    @jasonbaker3447 3 года назад +1

    Great video, got me thinking.... If you hook a fish but the weak link doesn't break then you would be dragging the fish in alongside your lead? This rig looks like it will present a bait in the same way a standard pulley rig does? Maybe you could adapt a pulley rig if you like the hair rig style and fish a rotten bottom? Or maybe I got the rig wrong?

    • @gsp
      @gsp  3 года назад

      This rig is the most common rig used for big fish in the whole of South Africa and its very effective. I do understand where you're coming from but this rig works because it is a direct attachment from main line to hook length and because its all cast on the hook length strength. You could do it with a pulley rig but then there are alot of things going on where as this rig is very simple and can be switched between different Dongle lengths and lead link b/S with ease. And believe me when you're hooked into a 300lb+ stungray the 6 oz lead isn't event noticeable!😂

    • @jasonbaker3447
      @jasonbaker3447 3 года назад +1

      @@gsp I don't doubt the rig, it really does look great and I love the videos..... I was more thinking the extra fuss of adapting a pulley rig would be kinder on the fish as its not getting dragged in on top of a grip lead? Also perhaps more chance of retrieving your lead and leaving less in the water?

    • @gsp
      @gsp  3 года назад

      In theory for smaller 'big' fish i.e bass, cod etc it would work and you would keep the lead up, in line and out of the way. For bigger fish, tope, big rays, shark, kob there are 2 reasons this rig is far better. 1 because you're clipping the lead to the hook length and not the other way round you can fish a big bait without having to balance it with a lead weight, so you can fish a bigger bait than lead which you cannot do with a pulley. 2 when you are fishing for big fish you want to get rid of that lead and also have a direct knot and swivel link to your mainline. If youre applying 12-15kg or more drag then the swivel resting against the knot above the lead on a pulley rig will cause damage and could lose a big fish. Ive even had beads split!
      I think for smaller stuff it may work OK because you can easily offer a peeler crab on a Dongle without affecting the balance of the rig and it would cast fine👍
