Hi Mike (er Garrett?) either way, thank you so much! That really means a lot considering your years of training and experience. Too bad I'm literally as far away from South Florida as I could possibly be. It'd be fun to collaborate. Maybe a little debate on the how to cut Jolly/ Quadec? :) Good stuff... I like your videos... You need to make more! Also wanted to mention. I subbed. Checked out your website at southfloridatileinstallation.com. Your work is BEAUTIFUL! Thanks again for the comment. @@Mat-W-1TFandF I could tell right away that you have real workmanship skills and I very much appreciated the care you took to edit your video with such a thoughtful approach. I'm always happy to talk shop, you can call anytime. Thanks for the compliments, I hope we can make another video but there always seems to be a lack of time to make them as tight as we like! Great video and great tile work! We're looking forward to your future videos. Mike
I love your videos they’re very informative, I even learn couple tricks from you just watching it! One thing I realized that I was having problem on my previous tile install job is that whenever I tile around the niche my bottom tile perfectly on the bottom but top of the niche always caused some problems and have a bigger grout joint and misaligned tile like yours on the video. What are your thoughts on overcoming on that? I was thinking not lining the tile perfectly on the niche and just planning the tile layout to having half cut instead using full tile on the bottom and top of the niche. Another thing what type of schluter trim and corners did you use on this video? Could you share the link to product? Please keep the videos coming!
Hey there Volkan! Thanks for the comment! Hearing your validation is really appreciated. Thank you so much for watching the video so closely! That discrepancy in the grout joint above the niche was just 1/16th of an inch, Isn't it amazing how the eye can pick up that small of a variation. Fortunately, it's hardly noticeable with you're up-close. and really not noticeable when the glass wall and door is on. I was somewhat embarrassed about it. The home owners didn't notice when complete Part of the issue came from using the small format tile. I've done a number of other installs and haven't had such a noticeable issue. Another Part of the issue was from using the Rondec (Rondec is the style of trim). There's more wiggle room when using Jolly which is the flat profile trim. I used the inside corners with the Rondec to trim it out nice. In my subsequent installs I figured what the main issue was! instead of putting the trim inside the niche box put it on the outside lip. When the trim is on the inside edge of the niche, you can't shift it the 1/16th to compensate for the slight fluctuation in the running grout line. installing the Rondec/Quadec on the outside "wall" allows a lot more flexibility to shift the bullnose up or down (this doesn't work with Jolly trim). Even if an extra 16th of the tile inside the niche is showing, it's virtually indistinguishable compared to the very apparent grout line. At the very least, install the top piece of trim outside. As you are probably aware, there are hundreds of Schluter profile shapes/colors/styles/materials. The specific bullnose profile I used on this install is 1/4" RONDEC Color-coated aluminum (AC) BW. The inside and outside corners used on this install were special ordered. Their code was "ED/RO 60 BW" for the outside corners. and "ID/RO 60 BW" for the inside 90degree corners. A small fraction of any purchase will help support the 1T Fit and Finish channel: amzn.to/3NlBqbi - Schluter Systems and products on Amazon I was only able to find the RONDEC profile in 1/4" "matte" white on Amazon here: - amzn.to/47Ryzzh Thanks again for watching and comment! -M@ W/1T
Hey there Tyler! Thank you so much for the comment and question. And thank you for watching. I apologize for the delayed response I've been out of town for the last few weeks. I use Schluter thinsets. On this job, I used what little Schluter-Set I had on hand and the modified version called Schluter-All Set. That being said; Honestly, I've had good results with the Mapai products as well. If you haven't had a chance yet please subscribe. I'm starting a new shower surround this week. Hello Greg B! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Unfortunately, this was one of 3 jobs that I had to redo behind this guy who marketed himself as a tile setter. I blame lack of planning and forethought of the finished product. The first steps in the process of laying out a shower are literally set in stone. Everything starts with a good foundation. Hey there Marco thanks for watching and the comment. Yup! Lippage is virtually impossible to eliminate. If you would like to review the standards feel free to read: ANSI A108.02, Section 4.3.7: “Lippage refers to differences in elevation between edges of adjacent tile modules.”. The basic standard is 1/32". Many times I'll allow 1/16"... At the end of the day, it's all about customer satisfaction. I do disagree with you regarding the gray thinset and white grout. That is unless you are too lazy to clean your grout lines. ;) Thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment! -Mat with 1T
@@wasntme3651 It's all good. The most important thing is that they commented. ;) At the end-of-the-day they weren't wrong. There is some lippage and using grey thinset is somewhat of a hassle on white tile. However, the finished grout was grey! I appreciate YOUR comment. :) -Mat W/1T
