  • Here's another more forward-moving interpretation: / xlhhp
I shall accompany myself like both pianist and singer of old, and require three hands and two brains, and great sweeping feelings of rising and falling, and not bother with any rumours as to Mendelssohn's apparent distaste for rubato, because his was an age where liberties were far greater than mine. I think of Chopin asking Liszt to play his music, and Mendelssohn visiting Beethoven's old friend Dorothea von Ertmann in Italy, who according to Mendelssohn's account hurried and retarded the time, and am soothed that he 'learned something from her'.
