I remember hearing this on the radio quite a lot, presumably when it was new, and then at some point catching the video on TV - I remember thinking something like "Hey, he looks like Peter Kay!" and least jokingly thinking to myself that the song was sung by him, despite likely "knowing" deep down that it wasn't.
It's only this year (I think) that I end up rediscovering the song, and finding out that it actually *was* Peter Kay after all.
Pretty sure the male singer was fellow Glaswegian Paul Buchanan of The Blue Nile... but I could be wrong

I first heard this song about six months ago and have just discovered who sings it. In my mind it was a duet with a sort of black Pavarotti in a dinner jacket and bow tie and a younger Aretha Franklin in a billowing ball dress. I couldn't be more surprised to find out what the singers really look like!
This is a beautful classic. Where the male vocal begins at 0:38 is the most moving part of my personal video - here the previously-hidden black Pavarotti is suddenly revealed by a spotlight.

yeah that is the comedian peter kay and is him in a wig , the actual singer is Paul Buchanan of the Seminal Glasgow band The Blue Nile
