I've a question for the standby test.
I suppose the exynos variant isn't connected to the provider's IMS? While the Snapdragon will be connected to the IMS.
The difference here is that when a phone isn't connected to the IMS, it cannot run voice calls via WiFi or LTE, so the phone is always on CSFB standby, in other words it's pinging the 3G or 2G network as well as the 4G network which it's running on by default, this can a significant impact on battery life.
A way to make it fair is disable 4G and Wifi calling on both devices.

A Snapdragon Galaxy, will have IMS support for all US carriers in it's firmware, while I doubt that a European S10 will have the IMS settings for American carriers.

What a great test. They were very close on every test, but that screen off time was terrible for the exynos, which actually doesn't make any sense since the exynos is more efficient on low load performance, which means that screen off drop was software related, but even disconsidering this test, the snapdragon had 4% greater battery.

That maybe explains why my s6 has such bad standby time. It drops like 50 percent in a day just when the screen is off (because it is the exonys version which is worse at standby presumably)

  • @richardbroder
    @richardbroder 4 года назад +1

The biggest diference was not during on-screen time, but during standby. It seems the Exynos version on the early days (when this video was shot) had a firmware issue that resulted in such high standby usage, this issue didn't affect the Snapdragon variants. I'm actually surprised by seeing a S10+ (with larger battery) use 17% for 16hrs of standby, that's over 1%/hour. As contrast, currently, my Exynos S10 (non-plus) drains only 5% in 10hrs of Standby (that's 0,5%/hr). I do remember that my S10 did have high battery usage in standby when I initially got it, but I fixed the problem by using the Medium Power setting (which forces reduced background usage) and, by disabling the "limit CPU to 70%" feature, I actually got a significant increase in battery life without having to deal with any sort of slowdown. It seems that this problem has since been fixed even for those using regular power settings, and the Exynos no longer has standby battery drain issues.

To save you time: The difference is CLEARLY only in the standby time, whereas the Exynos consumes double the power of the snapdragon (8% vs 16% loss). Assuming that the phones are setted exactly in the same way, a better way to conduct the test would be to simulate the screen on/screen off continously so that we can really simulate the everyday usage. I'm very curious to know if the gap increases, remains the same, diminishes or even the trend is inverted if you don't make it standby for 16 hours in a row. I understand it's a more tough test to make. Thank you for your time and efforts, this is of course still incredibly useful data!

In all the these tests the Snapdragon and Exynos dropped equally in percentage, except for the standby test where all of a sudden a huge difference appeared which I think cannot be logically explained. If the Exynos would indeed be less power efficient these should have led to differences in other tests than the standby test as well. I think there was maybe a factor in play during the standby test of which the person doing the test was not aware (the test is actually one of the best battery tests I've ever seen, so props for that).

Something we would have otherwise all missed, because I don't think many people on youtube test that, even though it's on standby the vast majority of the time. Awesome stuff.
Although 17% over 16 hours... meh. About 1% per hour. Not bad.
Edit: Plus they came out with an update that gives it at least an extra hour battery, which seems to be to do with standby.
And since the last test killed the Exynos with an hour of gameplay (both losing about the same amount of battery), if we add that hour back to the Exynos due to the update, they would be perfectly even... right?

@@iprobablydontlikeyou6562 you are so wrong. There is a large difference in the way these two phones perform specially in gaming. S10 exynos can't rung pubg smoothly at 60 fps and constantly drops frame but snapdragon consistently pushes out 60 fps on pubg. It's not an optimisation problem but a throttling issue which Samsung choose to ignore. Exynos is literally garbage when compared to snapdragon. Just search RUclips and you'll find lots of videos confirming this.

i actually expected worse battery life. I think the S10e (exynos) can bring me with ease over the day. I use my phone mostly for whatsapp, google maps, news, twitter, youtube, netflix, etc. In most cases i use my phone less than 4 hours of screen on time per day. Yeah ofc the Snapdragon gives you 1+ hour of usage but tbh i probably will never ever get 8h dot for one day.
And the updates seem to have improved the battery life.

The biggest problem is exynos is weaker, quickly thermal throttle in games and often over heat killing your battery in the process, performance itself is much worse in games you will lose frames and overall you will get 20-30% lower fps.

It's possible that the big difference in the standby battery drain is cause by the different sim management by the 2 phones? The exynos shouldn't be used in the markets where it's sold the snap version.

I live in Vietnam and so my S10+ was made here and is the Exynos version, but standby times are never consistent. I charge my phone to 100% so that it is finished by the time I go to bed, because I don't like to leave it on charge all night. Some mornings I wake up and it has only lost 3% others it has lost 7-12%. If the cell tower changes or there is a problem with connection the phone will search for another signal and this is the variant your test cannot compare equally unless the phones are on airplane mode and then they should lose 0% each.
