Maybe im asking the wrong question. If i‘m a poor worker and have dependent wife and children, why should i volunteer to fight in the war? Risking becoming invalid and being unable to continue my work after war and becoming a charity case. Especially in the ww1, the uk was not really threatened by the things happening on the continent: austria monarchy-germany (prussia) vs russia-france.
It was the empire, india, south africa with the commerce and royal navy. But those were bigger interests. And the monarchs were all related (english, german, russian).
