    Great kit! Mine's not quite up to that yet. I have a Lansky puck, a small fine grit stone, a ceramic rod, a strop, and the same green polishing compound. I also keep a bastard file in my vehicle for my cheap beater axe. The only purpose for that axe is to get me out of a sticky situation where I may be throwing it in the dirt so I'm not as picky with the edge on that axe!

      @HighCarbonSteelLove  8 лет назад +1

      +BlackRifle Survival Thank you for the kind words, my friend! I agree..the wax and compound are a must. Different type of waxes and compounds work, but I have found these to be very affordable, solid options. The fixn wax is only $4 from the pathfinder store and the compound blocks are only about $5 at Harbor Freight and each item lasts a long time! Thank you for watching and it's great to hear from you! -Dave

      I have a harbor freight close to my work, I'll make a beeline there for the compound. Thanks again for those awesome tips. I may have to copy your idea on the pouch for keeping them all together as of the moment I have a cardboard box, which isn't very good for any field touch ups.

    Could that eraser wear down the diamond abrasive over time? I realize that it’s a diamond sharpener, but all things can wear out eventually. Dmt recommends a white polymer eraser.

    • @HighCarbonSteelLove
      @HighCarbonSteelLove  6 лет назад

      I am sure that could happen eventually but I don't always use the eraser on the sharpeners. Mostly just in the field when needed. Actually, simple soap and water at home works just fine. Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment! -Dave

    Thanks for sharing this with us. I have a question about the sharpeners you use if I could only afford to buy one of the sharpeners and want to have a shave-able edge on my knife what sharpener would you recorded, the coarse fine, or the extra fine? Thanks again for the video!

    • @HighCarbonSteelLove
      @HighCarbonSteelLove  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you for stopping by, Mark! I think the coarse/fine would offer you more options. The extra/extra extra is more for honing, whereas the the coarse/fine will allow you to fix up a damaged edge while the fine can bring back an edge. In combination with a ceramic rod and/or leather strop, you would be all set, IMHO. -Dave

    • @Mksandman
      @Mksandman 7 лет назад

      Thanks so much for the reply! I ended up buying a newer model they make that's fine/extra fine because that was the only available option. I also really liked the idea of finishing the knife with ceramic rod and skipping the strop altogether. Thanks again!

    • @HighCarbonSteelLove
      @HighCarbonSteelLove  6 лет назад

    Surprised not to see a file in your kit, especially useful for axes and can be multi functional. People give files a bad rap but I can put a shaving edge on my axes with one.

    • @HighCarbonSteelLove
      @HighCarbonSteelLove  8 лет назад +2

      +Timbo Slice (Yambagger46) I don't keep it in this kit much but in my pack I keep a small file that was cut in half by a friend that works well. I use it for sharpening and a chert striker for flint & steel. I usually don't carry a full sized mill bastard file because they are a bit heavy and I like to keep them at home, where they stay clean. I am a fan of files, too! Thank you for watching! -Dave

    David, curious if you've ever tried the Worksharp Field Sharpener. It's what I use in when I'm out. Nice and compact. If you have used it, I'd be curious to your thoughts on why your kit (which is great by the way) works better for you. Keep up the good work.
    Also, I know you are a big fixin wax fan. I made a batch of fixin wax and right now I'm testing in the field and also just letting it sit in my knife cabinet, at room temperature to see how it holds up. To see if it starts to weep or lose shape. If it's still working well for me in a couple of weeks, I'd like to send you a little to try. Not to replace what you use but to let me know how it works compared to your, Pathfinder Fixin wax. Just looking for an opinion from somone that uses and loves fixin wax.
    Thanks

      +Jonathan Zook I have never used the workshop, Jonathan. I have seen it around but never tried it. This is the system I have been using for years, as I love the free-handed aspect of it. You fixn wax sounds great. I would love to try some out and give my opinion. And I am a huge user of fixn wax, as you know. I tried to make your raw beeswax work but it was just too solid of a block. I like it but I think it really need to be cut with something else. Thank with you again soon, brother JZ! -Dave

      +HighCarbonSteel Love Now that I've made a batch of fixin wax, I understand where you're coming from regarding the hardness factor. I've used it so much it's just what I'm used to. But now I see why fixin wax is popular. I'll probably end up carrying a chunk of both. ha ha Hard to break old habits but I love the solid beeswax. If my batch holds up, I'll definitely send you some.

      Jonathan Zook Man, Jonathan, I wish I was able to use the solid beeswax as easily. It's just a bit too hard and a bit too sticky if I don't heat it up either before or during use. The fixn wax is perfect because it contains other ingredients and make it softer, but not too soft to be effective (if that makes sense). For example, I have found that Sno Seal (which is a great product) is just too soft to be multipurpose. Let me know how your excellent mix holds up, brother! -Dave

    An ordinary ink erases is the same thing, and costs a small fraction of what the Lansky eraser block You're right about the diamond sharpeners. Diamonds, whatever the grit, sharpen by cutting steel, and they aren't just relatively aggressive, being aggressive is the only way they can work. This makes it easier to sharpen a blade, but it also shortens the life of the blade. Often dramatically, when the blade has to be sharpened often enough. It's a bad idea to use one on a blade you really love, and want to last for years and years.

    I work from my home office quite a bit and have a leather belt around the door knob. I can't stand the thought of a dull knife so I strop while on the phone or whenever. My family thinks I need therapy but little do they know lol. I sleep like a rock knowing my babies are sharp!

      +cyclist01222 I am the same way. Stropping is one of my favorite activities and I do it all the time. Very meditative and usually brings back all of my edges. Thank you for watching and leaving your awesome comment! -Dave

    Great videos. Really like your channel. I think you are a bit over equipped for field sharpening but that is just my opinion.

      +Kevin Sluder Thank you for the kind words, Kevin! I could be over equipped for field sharpening, however, I love sharpening and find it very meditative. I find great joy in sitting by the fire at the end of the day and taking all my tools through a few stages of sharpening while having a drink. -Dave
