Desert Empires - History Of Africa with Zeinab Badawi [Episode 10]

  • In this episode Zeinab Badawi visits rarely seen historic sites and magnificent ruins in Mali and Mauritania in west Africa. We hear from Africans about how trans-Saharan trade, mainly in gold, meant that by about the 7th century rich kingdoms became established in West Africa. These eventually gave rise to three of the greatest empires on the continent, including the Mali Empire which began in the 13th century. Under armed guard, Zeinab visits the fabled city of Timbuktu, which was overrun by extremists in 2012. Mali’s ruler Mansa Musa was reputedly the wealthiest individual to have ever lived. She brings a rich narrative of a period in Africa’s history when it was a significant player in the world economy, and influenced global thinking through great centres of learning.

@Joepie De poepie Well, to be honest it doesn't say that, but if you feel guilty about it then, yes, most of it has been white mans fault. This series just covers the actual history of African people which is quite rich compared to what the white European education system has tried to teach. You seem so uncomfortable that you don't realize this is just a history and not a criticism. Your reaction seems to be unnecessary. Can't you just sit and watch a documentary series about African cultures and their history past and present without injecting your unnecessary guilt into the conversation? Because I do enjoy watching documentaries about European cultures (some have also been decimated by their own neighbours) and other indigenous cultures around the world. The world and other people are interesting, stop trying to find blame in everything and just enjoy the differences.

Africa is the Motherland of all human beings . This knowledge must be taught to all people across the world in all classrooms . But since mankind is so obssesed by colour , creed , religion , and all the poisons of the mind , the maority will not realize this . This is the sadness and the madness mankind is living in . We are primitive in the mind .

@Joepie De poepie Actually if you are talking these civilization it's actually plenty from actually Africans. Close to a million manuscripts have been left. Lucky the native people hid the records from the invading French. Who most likely would have burned or stolen them.

@Joepie De poepie Infighting and outside invasion I would say. Failure to adapt to new threats and putting ethnic tensions aside. Knowledge is meaningless without action to implement real change. Ethnic tensions is still prevelant in many African countries. Rwanda for example have learned from this and is now developing into a very beautiful country. Countries can rise very quickly to prominence. It wasn't that long ago China was known as the sick man of Asia. Now it has re-established itself as a great power. With the right attitude I wouldn't be surprised if a place like Ethiopia for example could not do similar.

I don't know why I have always been confused by all the different tribe names that Mande people have in West Africa, but regardless of their tribe names they are all literally Mandinka. That Mande Charter also blew my mind.

This series has taught me a lot, but it just could have been so much better. What was the point of including the audio of the woman saying "I sell traditional artefacts. I don't know much about history, but I've heard this city was beautiful"?
Stuff like this has left this documentary series down, in all the episodes I've seen. It's been informative and, at times, beautifully shot but it just seems like it was filmed in too much of a hurry, without enough groundwork done to adequately present graphics, historical detail, explication of how things fit into an overarching narrative, or getting guests on with revealing things to say.
Still a good place to start on learning about Africa though.
