Keith wasn't the only drummer to not have a hi hat on their kit. Brian Chippendale of Lightning Bolt had only two cymbals (a crash and ride) on his kit.
Another wonderful performance by Pascal Thielen -- who has much of the look of young Keith Moon, already -- and, again, impeccable production by Art of Drumming. Thank you so much! My wife (age 63) is a big Who fan. She's not a drummer, but when we were first dating in our early 20s, she was big on "air drumming" to Keith Moon. So when I saw this video come up, I played "the drums only" portion for her, not showing her the screen -- so she couldn't see what it was. And before the song was even a quarter of the way through, she said, "that's Keith Moon ... 'My Generation'." So congratulations, you passed the Linda test! It's the highest honor I can bestow on any drummer. Then we watched the whole video together, and we noted how fabulous the tone of those drums are, and how much more "open" the sound of drums were back then, which she described as "jazzy." ... Bingo. (Especially so for Moon, who made such sparse use of the hi-hat -- here, without one even present!) I am personally a big hi-hat fan, but what Moon did was not so much about keeping the time; he was more like a second lead guitarist.
Wow! How did you do that? That was incredible! The perfect balance of great and sloppy! I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. How hard was that? Did you have any times through where you thought, "Nah, that's too clean. Try again."? Mad props for pulling that off.
Not taking from your cover, but during recording of this track in 1965 Keith still played pretty basic kit, one tom and one floor tom, two cymbals and at this time he still used hihat. No double bass drum till mid 1966.
No hi hats FREAK. ME. OUT. Great playing!

I remember there's a clip with John Entwhistle where he said the reason Keith didn't play with a Hi-Hat was they were too quite.

Thanks! I paid attention to which fills are played clean and in which ones it „doesn’t matter“. And then I just had fun :)

A really good call! We have it on our list!

The headphones are very fitting, however Pascal could have amped up the facial expressions and goofy little stick twirls.
He did
To be honest the facial expression game is stronger in the second song we recorded :D
