Do you mean morote or ippon? If Eduard chimes in on this definitely listen to him over me, but for ippon seoi I prefer the lapel. For instance, left hand on uke's right lapel, right arm goes underneath uke's right arm for right handed seoi and the reverse for left handed seoi are the more common competitive grips.

Watching my daughter doing judo, sparked the fire again and she followed shortly after. Since they were both doing judo I decided to give it a shot. Happy to say i love it and never miss judo practice.

But you MUST ABSOLUTELY BE CAREFUL and spar only with the people likewise, or proficient Black belts who pay a lot of attention to you. Young bucks-competitors, you send them packing straight away. These guys very often do not care about the partner, they only care to win a randori, and often wake up when it's too late. that is masterful , and what Judo’s founder Jigaro Kano envisioned I’m sure
I did judo for about a year as a kid… but it was the early 70s, and I was into Billy Jack, Kwai Chaing Caine, and Bruce Lee, so I wanted to punch and kick.
I left Judo and started taking kung-fu lessons….my bad. Lol!
…. and yes, of course, all of those film stars I mentioned did their share of throws, sweeps, locks too…I just dug the punches and kicks.
No disrespect to kung-fu…. there are some bad ass kung fu systems out there, and some did include throws and locks and sweeps etc.
but to me, judo was very rough and tumble, and effective!
They spend a lot of time sparring (randori) Every class!

Great video. One of the most basic principles of judo is “mutual benefit “. I spent an entire class teaching a new guy how to fall, it’s not a big deal but one has to be proficient to start learning throws so they don’t get injured. Traditional Judo clubs operate on specific principles and that’s part of what makes them successful.

No, it isn't them alone, but if you had to say one person or one group of people who to give the credit to, it would have to be the Gracies. Wrestling came later and is today the most important part of it, but the Gracies were the first. And it is mind boggling that any one family can be this important - they literally rival the rest of the world on they own. Depends. The vast majority of people have never trained grappling before, and therefore don’t have the defense to be able to stop a good judoka from throwing them . On top of that a lot of good throws can easily hurt someone who don’t know how to fall correctly , even on the mat. Now imagine someone throwing a person on concrete or a hard surface , that can quickly end a fight within a few seconds. Plus a lot of throws and sweeps teaches you how to throw the person and stay standing . Only way it would be difficult for a high level judoka to actually throw someone would be if they are going against someone with grappling experience ( which is a very low chance ).

I trained in judo, ju-jitsu, Shotokan karate, tae kwan do, and a little bit of arnis, and I would ABSOLUTELY use judo on the street. 1. You don't need a flashy throw to overcome most opponents. A simple o soto gari can be a devastating throw that doesn't put you at great risk of ending up on the ground yourself. Seriously, a properly performed o soto gari HURTS, even on the mat. It also puts you in a great position to finish with an arm bar or a control position if you just want to hold them down until the cops arrive. 2. While most schools focus on the sport aspect of judo, it's not the only part of judo. There are katas in judo designed to teach self-defense principles. See the goshin jutsu kata, for example. (ruclips.net/video/o8MlGidQY-4/видео.htmlsi=9ShhJIAiNbpv0y6X) The dojo I trained at paired judo with Japanese ju-jitsu, and we always devoted time to self-defense training that made use of techniques that would be illegal in competition, including strikes. 3. Never underestimate the value of the skills judo has to teach about manipulating where and how your opponent moves. 4. If you do wind up on the ground, judo will give you the skills to dominate on the ground. 5. The reward of using judo in a self-defense situation is that it can end a fight very, very quickly. You might trade strikes with a guy for a while, but at striking range, you run the risk of taking as much damage as you deal. However, if you get inside strike range and slam your opponent on his head, the fight is over. Also, I'd much rather my opponent's head hit the ground than my fist hit my opponent's head. I like the bones in my hand to stay undamaged, thanks.

Landing on a dazed oppenent (if you dont end the fight then outrigh) in a dominant position to do well known judo/bjj submissions is good for any situation. Depending on your takedown selection youre also in a great position to strike without threat to yourself. You have good takedown defense, ability to fall more safely, transition, frankly its better than Bjj until you get to a much more advanced skill level in bjj.
