Given his track record of becoming stronger than his previous opponents post first Super Saiyan transformation, the writers would have had Vegeta screw it up by toying with Freiza, followed by Vegeta giving another speech about Saiyan pride followed by Frieza outsmarting Vegeta by playing on said Saiyan pride and then Goku would have to save the day, again.
