  • Jerry Seinfeld Issues Apology After Inadvertently 'Insulting' Howard Stern: 'I'm Sorry'
Jerry Seinfeld has extended an apology to Howard Stern following remarks made during a conversation on the Fly on the Wall podcast hosted by David Spade and Dana Carvey. Seinfeld, 70, expressed regret for his comments regarding Stern, 70, and the state of comedy, specifically in the realm of podcasting.
During the podcast discussion, Seinfeld had suggested that Stern had been "outflanked" by other comedic podcasts, citing Spade and Carvey's joint podcast as an example. Seinfeld praised Fly on the Wall as "the best [comedy podcast] on the air," but his comments about Stern stirred controversy.
In a statement to PEOPLE, Seinfeld clarified his intentions, stating, “I really feel bad for what I said about my friend Howard Stern in a conversation with David Spade and Dana Carvey, talking about the glut of comedy podcasts. I meant to say he must feel surrounded but I said ‘outflanked’ which sounded terrible and insulting."
Seinfeld acknowledged Stern's significant influence in the industry and emphasized that the smaller podcasts posed no threat to Stern's established show. He concluded his statement with an apology, saying, "Anyway, it was bad and I’m sorry, Howie. I still love you. Please forgive me.”
Representatives for Stern have yet to respond to requests for comment regarding Seinfeld's apology.
Seinfeld and Stern have a history of collaboration, with Seinfeld making multiple appearances on Stern's show over the years. Their most recent interaction occurred in 2020 when Seinfeld promoted his standup special, "23 Hours to Kill."
During past conversations, Stern has explored various topics with Seinfeld, including societal judgment and the coronavirus pandemic. Seinfeld has often praised Stern's approach to his craft, highlighting Stern's commitment to authenticity and self-expression as key to his success.
