if there's one thing I've learned, it's to not believe anything, until I see it with my own eyes
Agreed💯
Fact!
This is very true. It's less true when Sadly it's Bradly says something though.
Smart man. I HATE Windows with a passion. But even if this SteamOS comes out in 2025, I'm not installing anything for several years. I've learned through patience and research how to get Windows 11 under control. How to shut off the spying and bloatware. It works perfectly for me as of now unless they do an update later that completely breaks it.
Have you ever seen air? With your own eyes?
Valve had a leak?! Call a plumber!
valve leaks more that any other company out there haha
@ woosh?

The Steam Deck is only "underpowered" if you compare it to other devices running at much higher wattages, which tanks battery life. With the deck you get perfect balance of performance to battery life, as well as an absolutely kick ass screen.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 destroy the steam deck.
@@raychii7361 it't not x86 so that defeats the purpose say bye bye to your steam library. buttt the steamdeck is pretty old honestly, newer ryzen APUs are quite capable
@@InnerFire6213 Most of the games I play run well on the deck. For anything else I have a gaming PC.
@@raychii7361every game needs to be changed for the chip, even then it will only be around the same, you have seen apple doing around 5 games, and the number of sales was so low it was funny, so dont expect anyone to convert games for it, just not worth it, this could change but don't expect it in the next 2 years.
not to mention the community and OS. there's a type of workaround for every issue you could face. and people who have had it before that are willing to tell you.
I want a steam deck-esque controller so bad. I have nerve damage in my right hand and the flexibility of the deck's controls with Steam input has let me play games so much better. Love that they just handed me the tools to make control schemes work, would be great to have at my PC too. Valve rules.
Preach brother!!!!!!!
We have to also keep in mind that the efficiency of the steamdeck isn't fully from the OS. Valve's custom SOC from AMD is very power efficient and gaming focused chip. Other manufacturers are just using laptop SOCs. Valve has the money to throw at AMD for a custom solution while others do not.
This is correct. Seems like a lot of people ignore this or forgotten. It's not all Steam OS
@@djfresh826 Correct, but mind you the benefits of SteamOS aren't just limited to power efficiency, there's also UI. Gaming Mode and not needing to deal with the Desktop Environment right out of the box is huge. I think that was the biggest driver of the Steam Deck's success.
The chip is actually made for a very different kind of devices (advertisement displays IIRC). Valve/AMD are basically just disabling the party Valve doesn't need (through laser).
One of the main advantage of the Steam Deck is also one of its weakest points: the CPU isn't powerful enough for some games, but it allows the chip to use a lot less power than 6 or 8 cores during idle.
Plus you might add the GPU being able to go to 667 MHz at lowest (vs 800 than the SD Oled chip) and the fact that it uses the slightly obsolete but yet good enough PCI-E 3.0 interface for the internal storage. And, last but not least, most chips are able to get a good efficiency improvement from undervolting.
The Steam deck chip wasn’t even specifically made for the deck it was made for something else and that company wasn’t gonna use it anymore. Stop glorifying valve. That’s how we become bran obsessed that’s not good
The other laptop chip powered hand helds will make the steam deck look like a Nintendo switch in terms of performance. Battery life be damned, performance sells.
It also force developers to finally make native Linux gaming a thing.
Unless they make games run only on the steam deck, while disabling it for other distros
@@nizarelfennani7477 Bro this is linux we are talking about. Someone is gonna make a patch lol
@@nizarelfennani7477 AFAIK, valves compatibility layer works with most if not all modern Linux distros
@@nizarelfennani7477I'm pretty sure that support for stuff like kernel anti cheat would have to be merged to the mainline kernel which everyone uses or into Arch (what SteamOS is based on), hence making it open source
I hate Linux and own steam deck do something basic and simple takes to clicks on mac or windows to do on Linux you need type in command two minutes long or longer just do something stupid basic simple windows and mac can do it with double click
In a lineup of hardware, the first one I'll be picking over everything else is the one that has gyro and dual trackpads.
Steam just needs to launch a console and then they have a broader ecosystem than Sony.....
Console, true handheld, and VR
That's basically, dock the deck
For me, the thing that makes the Deck so awesome is that it is essentially a netbook that can game really well. With a mini wireless keyboard, mouse, dock, charger, and the Deck fit into one case, it is smaller and lighter that my big gaming laptop while having most of the same capabilities. The small screen is a limitation, but if I need to, I can plug it into a TV or a monitor, write papers, watch movies, and run everything my laptop can.
There's one problem with the Steam Deck. It runs Linux and publishers don't want to make their games work with Windows and Linux. I've seen a few games like COD and a majority of games with Anti-cheat, and Jedi Fallen Order and most EA games a few others not work on my Steam Deck.
@@matthewjbauer1990the issue with these companies like Activision, EA, Ubisoft, etc. is that their businesses practices are absolutely trash and anti consumer. I believe there is a shift within the gaming market that’s happening right now and people are leaning on Valve to continue what they been doing. Providing a great gaming experience on all aspects of the gaming market. Hardware, software, customer service, right to repair, great deals, the freedom and flexibility of PC gaming and way much more.
@@42doodoochips EA, Ubisoft etc won't ignore the Steam Deck 2 and or Steam Deck 2. Instead, they'll intentionally choose to develop new games to not work with Linux/Wine/Proton. Yes, we are leaning on Valve to make a console that developers want to develop for but we have developers who just refuse to develop for Linux and until Valve ditches Linux in favor of Windows, I see game compatibility never reaching what it ultimately could be. I'll never buy another SteamOS device as a result knowing Linux is so limited for gaming. And I have Linux Mint installed on my travel laptop (a Lenovo Yoga 720).
@@42doodoochips bruh it's not that deep. It's just because Windows are much more populer that it's simpler and more convenient to develop games for Windows. Just like you are more keen to write documents for your client in Word doesn't make you anti client, it's just you are more used to it.
@@theRadBrad2022 Well, @42doodoochips does have a point. EA has recently called Linux gamers cheaters and said that its easy to program cheats for Linux due to the openness of Linux. However, they've also said those cheats are relatively hard to detect due to said openness of Linux. I still agree that publishers are just lazy and prefer to program for Windows over Linux otherwise they'd workaround the issues with anti-cheat on Linux and find a way to make it work.
IMO, it makes more sense for valve to make a low end price point steam deck that the others cant due to being able to subsidize it. they should just let others handle anything higher end, because theyre not in the market of making yearly iterations of the steam deck, because valve specifically has an incentive to not constantly move the low bar for performance for devs to optimize to. a yearly interative device would ruin this dynamic.
I agree, follow a typical console life span and offer mid life "pro" update
valves main weakness is availability. they basically dont have physical store presence and is basically digital only, and shipped in a very specific group of countries. other conpanies dont have this limitation currently
The other handhelds are more powerful but the steamdeck has the trackpads and more customization
Plus, they're extremely budget friendly, which is the reason why a lot of people took a chance on it.
@@DarkFoxKirin Exacly also this.
And HDR it's so nice when a game supports it.
Codenamed Fremont is Las Vegas. The big screen on Fremont... SteamOS coming to the big screen... Big screen = TV...
Honestly I just thought it was the neighborhood in Seattle which is located near them.
3:32 oh my god what a lineup
I’m here for all of it. … Unless typical Valve “timing” means it’ll arrive after I’m dead.
The Banjo Boys is my new favorite group. I just wonder who the 4th mystery member is... Inquiring minds must know, and solve this mystery. Innovative lyrics, immaculate playing and a blend of sophistication and "Hey, that's your sister, don't do that!" 10/10. All the Grammy's.
11:34 I like how he calls Nintendo little guys like the switch hasn’t almost outsold the ps4 and ps5 combined. And obviously they decimate every other handheld in sales.
@lonca_47 True. However, that's just his opinion. Most content creators. It's just their individual opinion. Doesn't dictate what happens in the real world. Just their own minds for content and engagement..
The switch is basically the Fisher Price version of the Steam Deck, that's why they're the "little guys". Also, Nintendo sucks as a company overall, not nearly as customer friendly.
@@DarkFoxKirin Got a point. I hate nintendo’s practices
@@DarkFoxKirinyou can’t deny that they reinvigorated handheld gaming though
@jonathanmangum4347 I never said that, I just feel like the Switch is lacking in what I find enjoyable (power and storage, not able to play the AAA games I enjoy properly) and it feels kiddy to me. Not to mention, again, that Nintendo sucks as a company and games almost never go on sale or decrease in price.
I've been wanting a new steam controller for a while. I actually loved it.
The reason the Steam Machines did not take off when first released was because Linux did not have the Proton Software element to the OS, which is essentially a translator for windows games to work on Linux, now that it's a thing and most windows games work on Linux now to and some work even better on Linux than on windows they can actually put the Steam Machines out now and have 90% of the Steam library work on the Machines, whereas the first attempt all those years ago only about 30% of the Steam library worked on them , that 's why a lot of manufacturers switched to shipping them with windows instead of Steam OS on them back then, they had to move units because people were not buying them as most of the chat boards and reviewers realizing that they could not play their whole library on them.
On the bulk question, as a smol wamin: omg holding my friend's Steamdeck felt instantly so much more ergonomic than holding my own Switch. That extra width meant my arms were held much more aligned with my shoulders and I could instantly feel the better posture. Now of course, I haven't used it for long periods of time to get the effect of the added weight, but even as a smol person I could feel the benefit from its size. Am very much looking to get myself a Steamdeck in the near-ish future so I'm not restricted by the power and the system locks of the Switch, but also because that thing just comfy to hold!
I just started gaming again and I bought a Steam Deck OLED Sunday. It's arriving soon and I lve been a little worried about if I bought the best console but after watching this video I feel a lot better about my choice. Thanks for the info guys keep up the good work
You'll love the OLED I upgraded from the LCD when the OLED dropped.
love you guys! (and Kinsey)
Im interested in buying a steam deck. Would it be better to buy one now or wait for the steam deck 2 to come out.
Only thing keeping me from purchasing any other handheld is the lack of well placed, fully functional, dual trackpads. Closest thing is the Zotac Zone but they're asking too much for too little power. Also, the trackpads aren't as feature rich as the Deck's touchpads.
20:03 windows games on arm on linux is possible and its already being done, take a look at asahi for example
The game boy is the reason handhelds exist 1989 was the beginning of handhelds.
I thought Sega had the first handheld
Naw, Game & Watch FTW
@ Sega was 1990/1991 a year later then game boy but was way better then a game boy except for the amount of batteries it took/drained all the time.
There have been handheld gaming devices since the 70s
Honestly I think this whole "X wouldn't exist if X didn't come first" line of thinking is pointless (whether it's the Deck, Switch, Game Boy, etc). There was and always will be a demand for portable handheld electronic devices. Moore's Law would predict that gaming handhelds would become more powerful and thus more versatile, just like smartphones and tablets can now a replace a lot of functions that used to require a desktop or laptop.
It’s the Fremont troll under the interstate 5 bridge.
I like these episodes of the channel, when you talk about current tech news. Should do more of them in the future.
Depending on price the Legion Go is brillant as a laptop replacement its a mini gaming station in a handheld shape but the steamdeck is by the best hand-held its really that good feels like what the switch two will be.
I just bought a steamdeck Oled and set it up yesterday lol
Lawrence arms! Yesss Matt.
Whatever happens 2025 feels like it’s gonna be one of the all time years in gaming
I am mostly a console player by choice, and recently my lifestyle has made have the need for a portable one that allows me to play single player RPG games with some ocasional multiplayer. The steam deck more than decently fills that need, only reason I haven’t done it is my Xbox game library. However if they release this steam os devices is even better in my opinion, because they allow to play PC games which can be also PS or Xbox games as well, so it bridges the exclusives dilema for console players.
Steam deck also has the track pads that works perfectly for the Total war games❤
I'm sure "Deckard" is a Blade Runner reference
I already have a good gaming PC I bought a steam deck oled mostly to play my older games that I've been neglecting.
I put bazite on my ROG Ally X and never looked back. It's great
I hope it’s a steam machine console and not a Steam Deck 2. I just got my steam deck
It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of hardware manufacturers, like Acer and Dell/Alienware (we know Alienware was working on a handheld PC a while back) were working on their own handheld PCs, but they've been holding off until the official release of SteamOS 3.x.
And before you mention Asus, MSI, and Lenovo, they were probably waiting too, but they got tired of waiting and decided to go with Windows. "Windows has it's problems, but it's available today and SteamOS isn't" was probably their logic. Remember, these companies spent a lot of money on these devices and they needed to recoup these losses at some point. They couldn't wait indefinitely.
Valve's SteamOS is a game changer because It's open support for other Linux Distro!
ahaha austin and matt are so divisive in this podcast
Gameboy wasn’t out of its league for the time…. Technology/games were changing faster than the improvements we see today between sequels.
I have multiple games unplayed in my collected. Bought 2 games this weekend for the deck and added a 3rd - Rad Rodgers, Super Woden GP2, and finally going to play Alien Isolation(owned for years and never played).
The Nintendo Switch is to small, meant for child hands.
Desktop Gamers doesn't have laptops. But a handheld is tempting. This is why lenovo and Asus want to see handhelds.
Deck is not available directly in many countries. Something like Ally cost less than smuggled valve console.
ROG Ally X dual boot Win and Bazzite. Full Win glory 😁 for win only games and Game pass, as well as full Steam OS (Bazzite). Bazzite is rock solid on the Ally X
I love that my ally has windows. I use it as my pc and gaming device. Sense I don’t have a desk top anymore
If steam get in to the console space that would be good. A 'Steam Dock' that connects the deck to your tv and then has an extra gpu and cpu that powers it.
Again keeping you in their ecosystem and also adding extra competition for the Microsoft and Sony's of the world.
I love that on switch I can play on the handheld and tv but imagine doing that with a steam deck.
SteamShelf Alpha - SteamDeck Hardware in a Small Box smaller than the XBOX Series-S. Basically a screen-less SteamDeck = $199.99
SteamShelf Sigma - Hardware using AMD's Strix Halo, in a box about the size of the XBOX Series-S = $499.99
SteamShelf Prime - Ryzen 7 9800x3D+Radeon 8800XT+64GB RAM = $1499.99
SteamShelf Zeta - Lenovo, Asus, Acer, HP, Alienware, MSI based on AMD hardware = $299.99-$4999.99
I have a feeling External GPU's are going to start becoming commonplace. Like the dock for the next steam deck and other competitors will have built in Egpu on top of the next gen APU in the handheld units already
I just want Valve to do a few things.
1. Release the Steam controller 2, playing FPS games with a touchpad is nice.
2. Release an official SteamOS distro so I can install it on any PC I build.
3. Try and make a cheaper steamdeck. $400 is good, I would love to see them try an arm based version for a lot of reasons. I have been clammering for a handheld that I'm not terrified of getting stolen, and is small enough to carry around. I'd expect a little worse performance, it would have to be able to play games pre 2010 at 40fps or higher
ARM would definitely be an issue, theres a reason why you need an emulator to run games made or x86. So unless VALVe somehow makes proton able to translate ARCHITECTURE calls.. Preformance is gonna slow.
SteamOS on PC or any device is FN Awesome
I would honestly prefer if the steam deck 2 was just slightly slimmer. Maybe not switch size, and needs to keep the ergonomics, but just a little easier to pull out of a bag and play while yogad into an economy airplane seat.
I still use my steam deck and steam controller regularly to stream to my living room from my PC down in the basement ... you can alt tab on your computer and just use your computer from the other room. Great for watching movies and such ! The odd time I play on it and need a xbox controller if the steam controller kinda sucks you just use a long usb into a xbox controller... I have everything wired not wireless internet wise.
the oems would save money not paying for a windows license
They have to buy a SteamOS license instead, probably not saving much
8:39 do a comparison with the recently released Claw 8 :D
I don’t know why all these other PC handheld manufacturers just don’t make their machine more ergonomic and better to hold for longer sessions. It’s the one critical thing, aside from SteamOS which seems like it’s about to go to the other machines, that has stopped me from leaving my og Steam Deck. I want a handheld with more power, but a lot of these designs like the Asus ones or Lenovo just don’t feel great to hold, and they’re already so big that I don’t want to use a shell or grip.
17:00 is such a struggle to listen to. They're not trying to be a monopoly, they already have anti-trust/monopoly legislation on the books against them. It's fresh blood. They tried steam machines too early, and they're taking a second walk down that path.
Valve is partnering up to provide SteamOS to other product manufacturers. We're not going to get steam deck 2 a hundred bucks cheaper than the competition (for the same hardware). We're going to get Lenovo Legion Go 3, with an option for SteamOS for $50 cheaper (savings against the windows license). And the next Ally, with an option for SteamOS, sacrificing *some* game compatibility (windows kernel level anti-cheat, non-steam launchers, and reliance on Proton) to decouple your gaming experience from Windows and save a few bucks up front.
i think valve should pitch steam os as the goto os and that you dont have to do any weird sub menu for your handheld at all like rog ally they use a weird armory crate thing to make their own interface which looks weird to me while steam os does none of that
1) used rog ally z1 extreme is $350ish. Theyre really cheap and you can upgrade the ssd + use a battery pack.
2) I wouldn't like steam os on arm since many games wouldn't work on it or youd need to play older titles.
Reminder to everyone, I still play everything decently well on a 1080, an olddddd card, nothing feels bad to play.
I just can't get into any kind of held hand gaming. The kids have switches and my oldest boy has an Asus. They are cool. Great graphics but I just prefer a bigger screen to game on. Handheld is cool for on the go or traveling, but I don't see how anyone uses it for their main gaming 😂. I'm too old and have bad eyes though 🤣
This is gonna sound controversial, but i genuinely think that Valve should launch a mobile platform game store/launcher. There are so many small and simple indie games that, if their Devs decide to, can be optimized or outfitted to run on Android/Arm architecture and Valve can totally capitalize on it. We're also entering an era where even cheap low to mid range phones can be pretty capable in gaming.
Apple be like: Nuh uh uhhhhhhh
other side of the world apple: Fine…
Apple really missed the boat on this.. the iPad has been around for 10+ years, and also Apple TV.. how hard would it have been to add a controller case for it?
The iPad mini would have been the perfect gaming console. You can stream the games to a tv wjth Apple TV. Would have been like a Nintendo switch
What if it's just a partnership with a mini PC maker who has more flexibility in their design capabilities like Minisforum, who could build something to their parameters with a valve logo embossed lid on it?
I would put SteamOS Arm on my phone in a heartbeat. Andoid is a fork of Linux...I've been waiting for years for more x86/ARM interoperability.
Do not hate on the game gear. Game gear was amazing back in the day.
Subbed
Until steam OS can play most popular MP games (Call of Duty, insurgency, WRC 24, and so on) there will be a market for windows handhelds
Tbh, I think Valve wants other manufacturers to take over making handhelds. I think Valve saw a hole in the market and released the Steam Deck to show everyone the untapped potential in the handheld space. Now they’ve done that they’re happy to give everyone else SteamOS and just continue to make tonnes of money off game sales on handheld. The only other area that Steam doesn’t dominate is the lounge room or game consoles. Which will likely be next if they don’t like what Microsoft is doing for their next console, which is supposed to allow Steam to be installed.
Lenovo Legion Go S with Steam OS next week
Call me crazy but i love my ally x with windows. I love having the ability to do anything i can do on a pc handheld
Should i get the steamdeck oled or hold out for a steam deck 2?
I'm debating the same thing
just get it,
deck 2 wouldn't be out yet till theres a huge upgrade on tech which isn't still there yet
I want a handheld so bad but the Steam Deck not having Fortnite is a dealbreaker. But I might get a Retroid Pocket 5 soon and that plays Fortnite no problem. So I mean... maybe the RP5 + Deck might be the way to go.
I can't believe I'm saying this but Matt is convincing me on the Steam Deck (I'd need to get it used on ebay though).
Steamdeck 2 + ARM Processor 💪
All this video shows is that steam needs a pro edition of the steam deck.
Higher res, higher max TDP, stronger apu, more RAM.
From what I noticed, is the games you want to play. Fortnite and Minecraft don’t play on the steam deck. Example of games. I was gonna get a steam deck
Initially but realized certain games couldn’t be played. So I got the ROG Ally X. Now I have all my launchers.
You can play Minecraft on Linux.
started clapping my cheeks in joy as soon as i saw a This Is upload
May I see
Just ordered my OLED a few days ago and was wondering when valve would make a new VR headset. Getting my son a meta quest 3 for Xmas I want to play half life alyx but don’t have a pc 😢.
11:41 Yeah Nintendo are little guys.
Little guys that outsells the entire competiton and rakes in tons of cash.
Nintendo is most definitely NOT a little guy.
3:33 I have two things to say for comedic reasons.
Only half of these dude’s dressed themselves.
This image will make bullies foam out the mouth.

Cartman Rocks
The switch success is the only reason handheld consoles/pcs exist
Exactly
Handhelds have been a thing before the Switch.
GPU DOCK COMBO FOR EXISTING STEAMDECK OWNERS IS NICE
All about the Steam take over. I don’t use my steam deck for any competitive online games. I use it for full fledged story centric games and want it to be the best it can be. My gaming laptop and pc are for online multiplayer man.
steam deck has the track pads, and best integration for Gyro. Yeah the legion go and the ROG Ally have Gyro, but the integration isn't near as good. Even using Holo os or the other one; they are still cloning a ps4-ps5 to work.
I think Steam will focus on cheap affordable SteamDEck2 or new SteamMachine, when gives 3-rd parties make more "biffy" options with SteamOS. (p.s. SteamOS will be free forever for everyone - as linux requires it)
Eh I have a huge library on steam, no need to get anything else. Their sales are insane and way better than the other consoles. No need for me to go anywhere else, steam is my home for gaming. The only other device I would be tempted to buy is the switch 2 for the games
I would buy a steam deck console
My ROG ally X runs steam n Windows at the same time it's 4TB ...2 for steam 2 for Windows ...as I said it's the best device right now
Valve is about to put the final nail in Xbox's coffin...and Microsoft deserves it for not seeing the writing on the wall. MS should have started rolling the Xbox ecosystem into the PC ecosystem a couple years ago and making a line of fully "consolized" PC's. I'm convinced there's a lot of people who would jump over to PC if their Xbox titles migrated over and, importantly, if they could just hook up their "PC" to a TV, sit back on the couch and navigate with a controller (absolutely no mouse and keyboard required).
I want a clamshell steamdeck.
easy win for steam to lend out steam os to other handhelds and they will be massive. you know what else is massive, the low taper fade meme.
Austin, after watching this is on the toilet for the duration of the video, i was able to learn to poop
I just think that after the Pandemic happened, the gaming industry grew, in all platforms. Games, consoles, hardware, handhelds. Everyone is taking the game higher. Inflation still sucks though.
Valve's internet service is not paid-for, from day 0 Valve has a good leverage over Sony/MS.
Besides that: I can install retroarch from Valve's marketplace in a second, will Sony/MS be able to compete with that?
'cuz I'm pretty sure Nintendo isn't going to...
Sony grossly cannot get themselves/developers to unlock fps in most of their old ps4 titles to run better on a ps5 - I wonder how they will manage backwards compatible optimizations for a handheld. + Valve have already announced they are working on arm compatibility for SteamOS.
i got my rog ally on sale for 399.00 pounds i love playing games on it but windows makes it unusable sometimes when can i get steam os
Bazzite Deck is a solid choice
Tell Austin to get the Ayaneo Air 1s
Dismissing Nintendo like that.
I'm thinking the new Steam Machine will use a slightly modified Ryzen MAX 385 with 8 cpu cores and 32 CU GPU cores but will use 32GB GDDR 6 RAM instead of LPDDR5.
