TRIGGERCAM 2.1 VS TACTACAM 5.0 FTS - Comparison of Scope Camera Systems

  • I hope this video is informative, I put a lot of effort into the presentation and editing of it.
Keep in mind, my perspective is from a target shooter, not hunter. In this video, I discuss and compare the two scope camera systems that I've used in order to capture target footage through my scope during matches. I started with the Tactacam Solo and FTS mount, then upgraded to the Tactacam 5.0 camera with FTS mount. This worked well for some time but I was not happy with the glass clarity for competition use. I more recently switched to the Triggercam 2.1.

Thanks for pointing out the crop factor. When I was using the Triggercam, I realized that there was some crop factor but did not know it was substantial compared to the Tactacam, and as you pointed out, no one else really mentions it. It's not something you'll know about until you use it yourself.

I happen to have a Trigger Cam, technically I had 2, the first had an internal electronic issue, TriggerCam replaced the unit, even though I purchased it 'used' guy used it once. The second unit had maybe an hour on the battery, THEN the card slot took a dump, note: use the cable for data transfer. I was thinking of sending it to TC to get it repaired but...with shipping being close to $150+ each way from the states a new one rapidly became a better option. The app has been fixed to a degree, still not bullet, or in my case pellet, proof. Savannah is the service person I've been corresponding with, a great help. You CAN use an external battery as a backup, I'd prefer swapping out batteries but I'm not sure that'll ever be an option. Now tomorrow I'm ordering a new unit and I'll decide what I'm doing with the broken one.

Thank you for addressing the eye/camera focus issue. I wondered about that plus user’s of Tacticam complained about it and when I asked other reviewers all I got back from them was a vague, “Oh, there’s a sweet spot”. I’ll be buying a Trigger cam 2.1 if not a dedicated digital camera scope. Thanks again. And if you have a high recoil rifle I’d suggest a good muzzle break you’ll avoid damaging your shoulder, eyebrow, and your camera. Bring some ear protection though. Edit: One of the Trigger Cam reviewers said the focus wheel would move with the recoil so he fixed the problem by cutting a thin piece of foam earplug and wedged it under the access panel for the focus wheel.

Excellent review and comparison. I've been lamenting many of the things you bring up as cons against the Tactacam. One you didn't mention is battery life. I find the Tacticam to eat up the battery quite quickly. I might find my way to purchasing a Triggercam.

Excellent video with much needed info. Two questions. Has TriggerCam fixed the App (specifically battery life info) since you made this video? I see from their website they claim 10 hours of standby and 2.5 hours of recording time. That is substantial but almost always exaggerated. Second, What is the depth of the cup that fits over the eyepiece on the TriggerCam? It looks be about an inch or a little more and i am hoping it does not cover my magnification adjustment ring. Thanks.

Good review. I've been using the Tactacam system for a good number of years and your analysis is consistent with my experience. The reflection glass problem can be an issue, though for me it has improved significantly as I have become more aware of the external lighting situations that cause it. Just wearing a brimmed hat helps to eliminate much of it. I will be trying your 4k suggestion in the near future, although for what I do I'm not certain that's it's going to be all that noticeable. The Tactacam app is very good but it had a tendency to crash on both of my LG phones, plus the small image on a cellphone makes focusing properly somewhat difficult. That being the case, I bought a cheap 10" notepad; it provides a much larger image and the app does not crash. Just as a side note, Tactacam customer service has been exceptional. My first camera failed after several years and, even though it was well past the warranty, Tactacam provided a new camera to me at a substantially reduced price.
