  • In the last 15 years, there have been some serious advancements in the world of videography and photography. Digiscoping has taken the worlds of birdwatching, hunting, and shooting by storm with the opportunity to capture high definition video at distance like a professional with gear you likely already have. Digiscoping is the ability to connect a camera, typically the camera on your mobile device, to an optic like a pair of binoculars or spotting scope. Over the last several years, several companies have produced a system to aid in the technique of digiscoping. More recently, there have been a few additions to the market that claim to take digiscoping to a whole new level of speed, accuracy, and efficiency. In this video, I have opted to put four of these systems to the test.

One thing you didn’t take into account, is the ability to mount these to your binos. Mag view gets an added bonus in the fact that it hooks up to your binos as well. Not everyone like’s running spotters, I for one hate them.

Nice review, I think you did an excellent job setting up categories for comparison. A couple of other options that are fairly popular are the Novagrade and the ScopeCam. I've owned both, though they each have newer models than what I've used. An important quality to me is the ability to use the same setup on a variety of scopes and phones so I lean towards the more universal options. That Gosky looks like a great value in that arena, if a bit slow to setup. I get a new phone every 2 years or so and hate having to buy a completely new system/case with each phone. The ability to get it set up quickly, and it being lightweight and pocket friendly are important to me. I'm pretty happy with the ScopeCam and being able to stick on a cheap attachment sticker if I upgrade phones. It also works flawlessly with both my Kowa 553 and 883, or my binos for that matter. That Ollin looks like a dream to use but it's pricey, scope specific and would need an upgraded phone case with each phone. And they don't even offer it for my current phone model anyway. Benefits and drawbacks to each system I suppose, that's why it's so great that you compared them on different attributes so people can decide which characteristics are most important to them and make an informed decision.

Hey great video! If I may, I suggest trying out the Novagrade phone adapter as well. Once it’s set up for your particular scope and phone it’s real quick and accurate. Plus, if you ever change your phone or scope you are covered. All aluminum other than the rings is what I appreciate as well. I haven’t hunted with it yet but it has served me well at 600 yard black powder silhouette matches.

Great job on the review! Another variable to consider is the cost between the systems when you are using them with multiple optics, like a bino and a spotter, or in my case, (1) bino, (2) compact spotter for backpack hunting and (3) full size one for the range.

Just picked up a new Samsung s23 ultra. For me it’s between the phone skope and magview, but phone skope edges it out. Having the capabilities to switch between phone cameras is big for me. With magview, acquiring the picture while placing the phone on the binos seems like a task. I like the ease of being able to change to which ever camera lens I need with the phone skope. By the way good review.

Great great great review sir 🫡
Spot on with everything you said about the magview. I own the magview, while I like it, it can be finnicky at first to position the camera on the scope it does get easier and faster with practice.
I also like the lens cover on the magview, it works well as a sun shade when positioned in the 90degree position when looking through the scope with your eye.
I like the idea of the olin system and the fast mounting but that case is a no go for me. Hopefully they come out with a nicer case and maybe I’ll give it a shot but for now I like being able to use any case I want, the Otterbox commuter case works great, no raised ridges around the iPhone lenses to get in the way of mounting, as you mentioned.
Buying a new case everytime I get a new phone is complete bs, also, potentially having to buy new adapters for the scope itself. No thanks..

In my opinion, ollin is great for quickness and ease of use, but magview wins for using multiple lenses. I have a newer galaxy with 5 lenses. Sometimes I want to use the 1x lens, sometimes I want to use the 3x/10x dedicated lenses. Also if I pull my phone off the optic I want to use a variety of lenses and the ollin blocks all but one. The ability to use a mag mount in the truck with magview is also a handy thing I hadn't considered. Plus you pick the form factor of the case and it goes in a pocket better due to that. It seems to boil down to a personal preference of quickness with limit to features for the ollin or harder to setup but easier to carry without blocking phone features. I'd go for the magview personally.

It would get expensive to compare scopes or binoculars. There's a huge market there. It's going to be hard to find a small market like these devices..... find the newest tech? Nice job, and of course you provide all the scores, so we can all adjust. My thought is that landscape vs portrait is not relevant, given how easy it is to crop pics. The image through the scope is rarely if ever rectangular, so no advantage fitting it into a portrait vs landscape rectangle. I suppose that it can be easier to get to the phone/camera functions in one mode or the other, but once you learn your preference, you won't be switching back and forth (more on this later). If flip/flop is dropped from the scoring PhoneSkope wins. And just in case you think I have product bias, I've owned a PhoneSkope system for a few years, but I'm probably switching to Ollin if they have an eyepiece adapter for my Nikon EDG scope. If not, I'll buy a PhoneSkope case for my new Samsung phone and save about a hundred bucks.
One thing that is the same for all systems: unless you carry around a massive tripod, you quickly learn that touching the phone starts everything moving, and you have to wait for the scope/phone to settle down before you can take the picture. There are many bluetooth single function remotes you can use to trigger the shutter, but being able to COMPLETLY control the phone wirelessly is quite an advantage (pics vs video, messing with exposure, etc). I only know how to do it via Android/Samsung, but I'm sure it can be done with other phones as well, so look into it if you have a tablet, or even phone-to-phone.
Remote control through a tablet has an additional benefit, though probably not a big deal for hunters. We're wildlife watchers and there are always a bunch of people that stop to ask what we are 'scoping, particularly when we go to Yellowstone. Most scope owners are happy to allow people to take a peek through the scope, but that often requires raising or lowering the scope to accommodate different heights and re-acquiring the subject. We are able to pass around our tablet. The city kids that squeal with delight when they see a critter up close makes it very satisfying.

I think you over scored the Olin case. You neglected to mention that the Olin is phone specific so you have to buy a new case every time you get a new phone and they don’t have a case for all phones. The Magview can go on any phone on any case. It’s a buy once, cry once product. Also, It has never taken me long to line up and get my phone on an image. Those time numbers for the Magview seem a bit inflated. Once we got to the end and realized you use Olin, I understood why it came out number 1. Otherwise, great video! Scoring system was great.

First thing I’d say is call them, they answer right away and are helpful.
Second, are you using their app? The app forces one camera to work so they arent constantly switching around.
The app also can force a manual focus mode, thats why I usually use.
Also, enable the grid feature to align and center the camera easily.
Last thing, you have to zoom in about 2X to remove the vignetting. When its there it throws off the phone exposure some times and also leaves a vignette, which no ones wants to see.
The product works, if you cant get it to work you are doing something wrong, most likely in the camera settings I would imagine.
