Hello Beautiful People! Happy Year of the Tiger! 🐯 I’m snowed in and loving every minute of it. Let’s close out the 80s together… the decade that influenced & helped define my taste in music for many years to come. 💙 1989… 1. Prayers For Rain - The Cure - Road trip STL to NYC in the summer of ‘03 …. Nighttime Torrential downpour through the Endless tunnels of PA … Disintegration was one of the CDs that safely guided me forward amidst semis & sleepiness (my AOTY) 2. Gun - Soundgarden (Spoonman is not my Soundgarden, this is. Superunknown came out when I was in high school, was everywhere, and just sounds too “clean”) His screams at the end of Gun though…my god(s). Intense. I want this band gritty & guttural. 3. Round & Round - New Order (Another one… they just know how to do it for my synth-pop lovin’ self) and Technique - what a sublime album cover of a rainbow washed cherub! Makes me think of the deadly surface beauty of an oil slick. 4. Kinda I Want To - NIN (anything from Pretty Hate Machine could’ve fit here) 5. Cuts You Up - Peter Murphy 6. Thieves - Ministry 7. Zombie Eaters - Faith No More 8. Monkey Gone To Heaven - Pixies 9. Suggestion - Fugazi (went to see them with my high school boyfriend and I will always have a fondness for 13 Songs, memories of attempting to style his mohawk with egg whites, & no hooligan shenanigans or boot-stomps in this pit!) 10. Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns - Mother Love Bone
1) Most of the Time - Bob Dylan 2) Here Comes Your Man - Pixies 3) Just a Friend - Biz Markie 4) Debaser - Pixies 5) Rooms On Fire - Stevie Nicks 6) The Beat(en) Generation - The The 7) Ring Them Bells - Bob Dylan 8) Pictures of You - The Cure 9) Yer So Bad - Tom Petty 10) Paradise City - Guns N’ Roses

“The Pass” might just be Rush’s greatest song in terms of feel, sonic tone and emotion. I don’t know if Neil Peart wrote any other lyrics that are so jaw-dropping and capable of making someone cry…It should have been a massive hit.
Great call by Kramzer with Bobby Brown’s very catchy ( and strangely underrated in his cannon of hit singles ) “ On Our Own “ . Just missed my list but a terrific “ guilty pleasure “ . Chorus is killer
Special shout out to a couple of British bands I had listened to back in 89 but had mostly forgotten about until the past couple of weeks: the Godfathers and the Screaming Blue Messiahs. The Godfathers More Songs About Love and Hate, from 1989, I found especially good. Pretty straightforward rock and roll. If you like the Stones, or the Georgia Satellites. Or the Smithereens. Or that kind of thing. Gonna see if I can find a copy this weekend, so thx TLM guys for this series. Making me remember a lot of things I'd forgotten!

1989 is fantastic year, honestly one of the best ever. Bumped a few of the songs from 1989 that charted in 90, because 90 isn't so great. So many great songs. the Honorable mentions list would probably make the Top 10 in most years. *Charting songs:* *1. Runnin' Down a Dream (3) - Tom Petty* - my favorite Petty song. Love the riff. *2. Closer to Fine -(7) Indigo Girls* - Lovely song deep sounding lyrics, and an amazing use of a penny whistle. *3. I'll Be You (8) - Replacements* - Shocking to learn that the Replacements even had a Hot 100 song (this is their only one). *4. Bust a Move (9) - Young MC* - Music at the end of the day is entertainment, and this song is so fun. *5. Patience (10) - Guns N Roses*- From the hard rocking Appetite to this? Honestly fantastic use of acoustic guitars and a wonderful delicate vocal from Axl. *Non Charting songs* *1. Elephant Stone (1) - Stone Roses* - Song of the Year. I actually like the shorter version (most people prefer the extended version) that was on the US version of their debut (not on Spotify, ugh). Absolutely mesmerizing. It's simultaneously beautiful, while also being different. *2. I am the Resurrection (2) - Stone Roses* - Frankly I could put most of The Stone Roses debut on here, but I'll stop here. At over 8 minutes, this should be too long for me (I tend to not like long songs, especially ones without lyrics for a while), but this one is varied enough in the final 5 minutes to keep my interest. *3. Madonna of the Wasps (4) - Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians* -A fantastic underrated song. Just lovely, and one that sound like it should have been a hit. *4. Higher Ground (5) - Red Hot Chili Peppers* - My favorite song of theirs. Of course a cover of the Stevie Wonder song, but this song is filled with so much energy, it just makes stand up and jump around. I probably shouldn't do that though, I will hurt myself. *5. Here Comes Your Man (6) - Pixies* - My favorite Pixies songs. Sounds like a great pop song, but just quirky enough for the Pixies. *Honorable Mentions:* 11. Mersey Paradise - B-Side to She Bangs the Drums - would have made the list, but didn't want too much Stones Roses. 12. Down In It - Nine Inc Nails 13. Free Fallin - Tom Petty (for Jason) 14. Head On - Jesus and Mary Chain 15. Wave of Mutilation - Pixies

Whatever my song of the year is, it’s probably from Doolittle or The Stone Roses (both those albums made not only my top 2 of the year, but also my overall top 100 list). I go back and forth on which song is my favorite, but currently it might be “Waterfall” from TSR. I’ve definitely been in a “She Bangs the Drums” phase though. My Doolittle favorite right now I agree with Jason might be “Here Comes Your Man”, but “Hey” is way up there as well (I’ll vote for that in the poll), as is “Monkey Gone To Heaven” and “Debaser”. A few other big favorites: The Cure - “Fascination Street” De La Soul - “Eye Know” Faith No More - any of the first 4 songs on The Real Thing… probably “Epic” if I had to pick one Beastie Boys - “The Sounds of Science” Camper Van Beethoven - “Sweethearts” Nine Inch Nails - “Something I Can Never Have” King’s X - “Pleiades” Tom Petty - “Free Fallin’” Also, great call on “This One’s For The Children” as Jason’s worst song. Since I once heard the first 4 New Kids on the Block albums as a kid, I revisited them last year during my 80’s/early 90’s album deep dive, and Merry Merry Xmas was definitely the most horrifying of those. One of my rare 1 star albums.
All great picks for SOTY! I want to vote for all of them. This series has now reach it's half-time😯 My top for 1989: 1. Pixies - Gouge Away 2.The Cure - Lovesong 3. The Jesus & Mary Chain - Head On 4. The Stone Roses - She Bangs The Drums 5. Chris Isaak - Wicked Games 6. Bob Dylan - Most of the Time 7. Jello Biafra with DOA - Full Metal Jackoff 8. The B-52s - Roam 9. NoMeansNo - Rags and Bones 10. Beastie Boys - Hey Ladies
1) Head On - The Jesus & Mary Chain (WC). Great mix of post-punk and early 60s rock with a super infectious chorus. 2) Gouge Away - Pixies (WC). Kind of the blueprint for the quiet/loud grunge of the 90s, this is apparently Black Francis' retelling of the story of Samson from the Bible. 3) Here Comes Your Man - Pixies (WC). The catchiest song about hobos of all time. 4) Eye Know - De La Soul (WC). Samples of both Steely Dan's "Peg" and the whistling solo from "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay"? This is the kind of stuff that will have those Jennys lining up to want to hang out with you. 5) Lovesong - The Cure (2). Another cool tune from everyone's favorite goths. 6) Hey Ladies - Beastie Boys (36). Master class in sampling. Vincent Van Gogh go and mail that ear. 7) So Alive - Love & Rockets (3). Cool tune that's like T.Rex for the 80s. 8) Knock Me Down - Red Hot Chili Peppers (WC). I release I lose all of Jason's respect for this one, but that coda is so infectious. I don't care. 9) I'll Be You - The Replacements (51). The 'Mats finally get some mainstream respect. Don't Tell a Soul is far from my favorite Replacements album, but this one's a banger. 10) Pop Song 89 - R.E.M. (86). Apparently, the song is kind of a goof on the Doors' "Hello, I Love You". One of my favorite Peter Buck guitar riffs. 1989 is probably my favorite year in music. At least 3 of this year's album releases rank in my top 10 albums of all time. The Hot 100 was pretty great too.
1989: Billboard: Metallica - One (Came out in '88 but surprised that it charted this year so it lands here. Fantastic build, disturbing lyrics, filthy guitar solo at the end, iconic machine-gun snare parts, total classic.) The Cure - Lullaby (Two picks from Disintegration land on my Billboard list. The first features a haunting guitar line, punchy bass, and fake synth strings that somehow don't sound cheesy. Gotta love it!) The Cure - Fascination Street (Surprised this one charted! The hardest rocking tune of Disintegration, with a sick bass line.) Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation 1814 (My favourite off of Rhythm Nation 1814. Great progression of the New Jack sound she started on Control but with a much harder edge, knocking snares, and gang vocals on the hook that hint towards the choruses of tons of 90's rap bangers.) Madonna - Like a Prayer (One of her best singles. There's a definite trend in late 80's pop of throwing in a gospel choir to make it sound more epic, and this is the best implementation of that trope.) Wild Card: Blue Nile - The Downtown Lights (Immaculately produced sophisti-pop right here. The perfect track for a late night drive back home in a cab after a night of casual drinks with friends while you look out the window at the neon lights whizzing by.) Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus (Charted in '90 but sticking it here. No other song has ever managed to capture its cowboy-synth-punk style. Sexy lyrics too.) Stone Roses - Fool's Gold (Dance-rock classic. Slinky guitar line combined with a break beat that never stops leads to an essential track in the Madchester canon.) 808 State - Pacific (Pretty much the peak of acid-house music. What other song starts with loon calls!) Worst: Milli Vanilli - Girl You Know It's True (The worst of late 80's house and hip-hop rolled into one. Depressing that their producers could've chosen anyone for them to lip sync to and they chose guys who can barely rap at all. Dreadful.) Best: Chris Isaak - Wicked Game (A shame that he's seen as a one-hit wonder since he has several great albums, but at least his one big hit is one of his best tunes. Endlessly sexy, especially on the hook with his falsetto.)
My Top Ten Songs of 1989 1)You've Got It - Simply Red 2)Slipping Away - The Rolling Stones 3)Rooms On Fire - Stevie Nicks 4)Almost Hear You Sigh - The Rolling Stones 5)I Won't Back Down - Tom Petty 6)The End Of The Innocence - Don Henley 7)My Paradise - The Outfield 8)Alice - Stevie Nicks 9)The House Is Rockin' - Stevie Ray Vaughan 10)Mixed Emotions - The Rolling Stones

One of his most enduring ballads. 1)Garden of Earthly Delights-XTC-Iv'e never heard a richer pop-rock song than this,so much going on melodically and texturally,my favorite XTC song, one of the best songs of the decade
@@darthseamus8833 he definitely did. Wasn’t my favourite ( preferred “Resurrection” , “ Drums “ and “ Sugar Spun Sister” off that record ) but Joe was spot on with his take on the songs’ importance

Way to go Jason with picking Dylan’s “Most of the Time” as SOY 1989! Excellent choice from the great “Oh Mercy” album. Also the alternative version of this song on the Bootleg series “Tell Tall Tales”. An even better approach from the Master.
1989 is a very strong year for songs, that’s why I have a lot of Honourable Mentions. Very unique, a gothic ‘Eleanor Rigby’.] 2. The Cure - Pictures of You [My favorite Cure song atm. Full of beautiful melodies and heartbreaking vocals/lyrics.] SONG OF THE YEAR 1989: Madonna - Dear Jessie [A fantastic song. This song has something to it that I haven’t understood yet. Love Shack - B-52's(show the love for the B-52's and it's such a fun song, and "Cosmic Thing" is a great album). Honourable mentions to :- Sowing the Seeds(of Love) - Tears for Fears(their last great work). Back to Life(However Do You Want Me) - Soul II Soul featuring Carnon Wheeler(another band that should of had more success, it made No. 4 on Billboard Hot 100 - but was a UK No. 1). Roam - B-52's(another great song from them, and on the great "Cosmic Thing"). Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode. Mayor of Simpleton - XTC. Buffalo Stance - Neneh Cherry. You Got It - Roy Orbison. Hello Eric: i am compiling my stats now. I know REM will have the most nominations/wins. Very cool to see Adam Ant represented on your list. Edit: Hey! We have the same number of unique artists at 65. I'm counting Tom Petty with or without the Heartbreakers as one artist. Same for Adam with or without the Ants. Blondie and Deborah Harry counted as two unique artists. : Most nominations: REM with 9 - two of which are SOTY (1984 - So. Central Rain, 1987 - The One I Love). Next highest is 3 each for: Talking Heads; The Moody Blues; Tom Petty (SOTY 1985 - Rebels); Berlin; The Pretenders (SOTY 1986 - Hymn to Her). So, REM is certainly my artist of the decade.
1) This Woman's Work - Kate Bush 2) Contact - Big Audio Dynamite 3) Debaser - Pixies 4) August & September - The The 5) Woman In The Wall - The Beautiful South

BILLBOARD 1. *Lovesong by The Cure #2* (What a track to be their big stateside hit. I just adore that prominent organ sound on the verses.) 2. *Lullaby by The Cure #74* (Creepy, melodic gothic rock.) 3. *Handle With Care by The Traveling Wilburys #63* (Incredibly catchy roots rock. Great use of the stacked talent involved.) 4. *Like a Prayer by Madonna #1* (Irresistible blend of art and dance pop. Gotta love Prince on guitar too, though I have to say that the Immaculate version is my favorite.) 5. *One by Metallica #35* (Nailing the metal ballad again with chill acoustic moments to go along with the head banging.) WILDCARD 1. WINNER: *I Wanna Be Adored by The Stone Roses* (The rather authoritative and atmospheric opening in what I'd consider a masterpiece of a record.) 2. *All the Way by New Order* (Realizing they've had a standout track for me almost yearly throughout the 80s. This might be one of their greatest blends of song and production.) 3. *Here Comes Your Man by Pixies* (At their absolute catchiest and most accessible without sacrificing a thing. That surfy guitar is so fun.) 4. *All I Want Is You by U2 #83* (It's like they took a traditional Irish folk song and turned it into a shimmering ballad in their trademark style. Great.) 5. *Made of Stone by The Stone Roses* (I actually forget how good this one is until I hear it again. It's like British Invasion filtered through hazy alt rock.) I really enjoyed the selection this year. Ending a truly fun decade on a great note. Billboard isn't going to go back to what it was, but it's not a struggle just yet. Worst TOP 40: Me So Horny by The 2 Live Crew #26 (Dang, there were some really terrible contenders this year. If you can handle the title being uttered repeatedly with "Me love you long time" throughout, you've got the lamest of hip hop to look forward to from there.) Worst Runner Up: Hangin' Tough by New Kids on the Block #1 I'll Be Loving You (Forever) by New Kids on the Block #1

Neil Young - Rockin' in the Free World 8. The Rolling Stones - Mixed Emotions 9. Fugazi - Promises 10. Van Morrison - Coney Island I limited my picks to one song per artist, because otherwise the list would be like half Stone Roses and the rest from Tom Petty, Pixies and The Cure. I don't know if it's cheating to put "Series of Dreams" on the list, but it was recorded in 1989 and I just think it's so much better than everything else on Oh Mercy. "You Got It" was a great pick from Jason, and it could probably make it into my top 10 as well If I were to redo it.

Faith No More - Epic (From Out of Nowhere was a competitor as well but this one simply lives up to its title.) 4. Georgia Satellites - All Over but the Cryin' (Not every breakup is a breakdown, some proudly make their point and then quit.) 3. Replacements - I'll Be You (My #1 Mats song.) 2. Cure - Lovesong (For many Cure fans Disintegration is a untouchable master work but though I like the band, I prefer other albums. Still, this is a great song - and it is a good album, just not their best.) 1. Alice Cooper - Poison (Like for most music lovers of my age, his great time was in the 70s when it was the band of this name and not just the singer. Anyway, he often had a little jewel on his competent-but-not-great later day albums and this may be the best of them.)
Roxanne - I am in with the doom trio of 17 Seconds , Faith & Pornography as my favorite Cure albums & can't understand the disdain Robert has for Wish which is pretty flawless.
@@davidellis5141 Fun fact - I listened to Bloodflowers just last night...not a top candidate. It seems that there can be quite different views on the band (and I will not spoil my favourite album until a Cure Listography.)
Love seeing Jason putting B52s “Roam” on his list. It is a perfect pop song. It wouldn’t sound out of place on another famous Athens Georgia band’s record.
Not a great year, but not terrible, either. I was working from the shortest playlist in over 20 years, but I like the songs that made my top 10. 1989 Hot 100 1. Fascination Street - The Cure 2. I usually waffle on a bit but I went to a party last night and haven’t felt this rough since….well, probably 1989. So straight to it… SOTY “This Womans Work” by Kate Bush ❤️

My favorites from the 1989 playlist...Jason has a win! (rare for me) While I like Joe's selected Kate Bush song as well, "Love and Anger" is just spectacular in every way. Haven't heard this album before (or any song on it)...gotta catch up on that. 1. Kate Bush- Love and Anger 2. The Cure- Pictures of You 3. The Stone Roses- I Wanna Be Adored 4. B-52s- Roam 5. An interesting year and some great winners from all of you. I love them all so voting is going to be tough! This is just so bad and cheesy it gives me second hand embarrassment. First: An obscure pick but a song I love none the less. "All the Things I Wasn't" by The Grapes of Wrath. Just an absolutely beautiful song by a Canadian band I love a lot. The album is one of favourites of the year too.
Great list Vanessa! We have a few artists in common. Thanks for introducing me to The Grapes of Wrath 's song. I hadn't heard it before and it sounds fantastic

I remember 1989 as a pivotal year in music, at least on a local level. The city I lived in got it's first "alternative" rock station and suddenly bands that NEVER got played on the radio were being heard by a bigger audience. Anyhoo, my top 5's... Usually it's a lot easier. Great picks guys!
If ‘87 was possibly my favourite year for albums, then 1989 has got to be one of the best for songs: Billboard Top 100: Like A Prayer - Madonna Janie’s Got A Gun - Aerosmith Lovesong - The Cure Runnin’ Down A Dream - Tom Petty Wildcards: Have I Told You Lately? - Van Morrison Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers Wicked Game - Chris Isaak The Sensual World - Kate Bush Let Love Rule - Lenny Kravitz Worst song: Girl You Know It’s True - Milli Vanilli (Any song by these fraudsters is a contender for this award. I have chosen this one because it was their biggest seller and therefore made most money under false pretences) Song of the Year: Sowing The Seeds Of Love - Tears For Fears (Of course it’s heavily influenced by The Beatles but that’s no bad thing. I’m sure that the Fab Four would have been proud to have created this musical masterpiece) I normally limit myself to 10 Honourable Mentions (5 Billboard and 5 Wildcards) but that has been doubled just for this year because it was so stacked with great songs: HMs - Billboard: You Got It - Roy Orbison The Look - Roxette When I See You Smile - Bad English Cuddly Toy - Roachford Fire Woman - The Cult Rooms On Fire - Stevie Nicks Eternal Flame - Bangles Jackie Brown - John Mellencamp The Living Years - Mike & The Mechanics Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode HMs - Wildcards: The Road To Hell - Chris Rea You’re Gone - Del Amitri Crossfire - Stevie Ray Vaughan The Pass - Rush I Don’t Want A Lover - Texas Fools Gold - Stone Roses Dry County - B-52’s Soul Crying Out - Simple Minds Rockin’ In The Free World - Neil Young Pacific 202 - 808 State
Hello Bryan: Cool ist as always. I just posted an hour ago. Looks like Wicked Game and Runnin' Down a Dream are both top 10's for us. A very big year - What a way to close the decade. Later, my friend.
Thanks Naughty. It certainly was a great end to the 1980s. If I didn’t restrict myself to one song per artist, I could easily have picked several from Full Moon Fever, which is my favourite album from this year. I will be surprised if it wasn’t one of your favourites too because I know you are a big Tom Petty fan. Strangely, this year has been the only time Tears For Fears have made my list - they are a member of the growing number of artists that have won a SOTY award but not made my top 10 again. I’m sure there will be several more before this series finishes.
I'd say that's an awfully nice list of 1989 songs! I especially like your Madonna, Tom Petty, Chris Isaak, Tears For Fears, Bangles and Roxette choices 🙂 It appears there are about seven songs unfamiliar to me, which I will listen to hopefully this evening. Anxious to hear the Del Amitri track in particular; they've had several songs I'm fond of. Take care Bryan.
Hello Bryan. I was able to give a listen to the songs I hadn't heard. I thought The Pass was very good. To a lesser extent, I also liked Jackie Brown and You're Gone. Hope to see 1990 picks from you on Friday!
@@brentjackson6839 Thanks for the great feedback, Brent. Del Amitri were hugely popular here in the UK before Britpop took over - sadly, they faded from the limelight soon afterwards. They will definitely be making more appearances in my list over the next few years. I also listed Change Everything as one of my 5 favourite albums of 1992.
I do think that this may have been the year in which my number of songs I long listed from the UK Top 100 for consideration hit a peak that it may never reach again (82). I was getting into a lot of indie/alternative music at the time and going to some London gigs, usually with workmates, but I was still keen on plenty of music that fell outside that genre. Hence, alongside the songs from indie/alternative acts I have songs by 3 well-established American artists, 2 of whom were in the Travelling Wilburys and one who had been in the Eagles. One of the former pair, Roy Orbison sadly died late in 1988 and had matched the Beatles for number of songs on my 1960 lists. His posthumous album was excellent. My left-field entry that fits neither of these categories is by a trio of brothers from the much-maligned English town of Luton and, to me at least, sounds like a great lost Earth, Wind & Fire song. This year's large list of acts with more than one long list entry who missed my top 10 - Fine Young Cannibals, XTC, Diesel Park West (3 songs), REM, Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians, New Order, Soul II Soul, Guns'n'Roses, House of Love and Tears for Fears. Arguably, my ultimate song of the year would be the full album version of I am the Resurrection by The Stone Roses: New York Minute - Don Henley Head On - The Jesus and Mary Chain Running' Down a Dream - Tom Petty She's a Mystery to Me - Roy Orbison Here Comes Your Man - The Pixies Monkey Gone to Heaven - The Pixies Good Times - Reid Made of Stone - The Stone Roses She Bangs the Drums - The Stone Roses Can't be Sure - The Sundays
01 Pictures Of You - The Cure 02 Hey Ladies - Beastie Boys 03 Veronica - Elvis Costello 04 Free Fallin - Tom Petty 05 Cherish - Madonna Wild Card 01 Mayor Of Simpleton - XTC 02 Monkey Gone To Heaven - Pixies 03 The Want Of A Nail - Todd Rundgren and Bobby Womack 04 Dirty Boulevard - Lou Reed 05 Made Of Stone - The Stone Roses
12. I Beg Your Pardon, by Kon Kan 11. Scherzo For Motorcycle & Orchestra, by John Williams 10. Turning Point, by New Order 9. Mixed Emotions, by The Rolling Stones 8. Dirty Old Town, by David Byrne 1. Personal Jesus, by Depeche Mode 1989 - not necessarily in that order. The '80s went out on a high note.
1989 generally is a weaker year for me like 88. Like Joe, a lot of the scenes forming around this time just aren't my thing compared to the rest of the decade, and I feel like in general for rock and pop we're starting to break away into the 90's which is probably the decade that clicks with me the least for those genres personally. That being said, my favorite track this year is one of my all time favorites, Lovesong by The Cure. I've been in awe of every moment of that song for my whole life, its more brief and simple than most other tracks from Disintegration but it stands out to me as a pop masterpiece, its perfectly crafted and every section adds a new emotional layer, especially when the guitar comes in the second bridge, always gives me goosebumps.
That Roy Orbison song is sooooo good. That Adrian Belew isn't bad. Never heard that one. Surprised I didn't see more Cure. Disintegration is arguably their masterpiece.

I thought that this was a great year. Just finished listening to new Black Country New Road release... Imagine John Cale tuning his viola for 50 minutes before the band kicks it for the last 4 minutes. This will be hyped until your ears bleed for the rest of the year, I am sure.
I like what I’ve heard. Going to listen a few more times before I decide to pick up a physical copy. Interesting the front man quit the band. I guess they’ll go all instrumental going forward. 🤷🏻♂️
Love and Anger is such a mystery to me. What secret do you have to bury so deep that you can't even think about it, nor can you even tell to your priest? What secret mixes love and anger? It seems deeper than just an extramarital affair. Kate's lyrics are really so much more than meet the eye. *What would we do without you?*
Steel Wheel shouldn’t have even been mentioned. Mixed Emotions is such a generic safe “hit” type song for the Stones. Just goes to show that nothing after Tattoo You is worth your time.

💙
1989…
1. Prayers For Rain - The Cure - Road trip STL to NYC in the summer of ‘03 …. Nighttime Torrential downpour through the Endless tunnels of PA … Disintegration was one of the CDs that safely guided me forward amidst semis & sleepiness (my AOTY)
4. Kinda I Want To - NIN (anything from Pretty Hate Machine could’ve fit here)
5. Cuts You Up - Peter Murphy
6. Thieves - Ministry
7. Zombie Eaters - Faith No More
8. Monkey Gone To Heaven - Pixies
9. Suggestion - Fugazi (went to see them with my high school boyfriend and I will always have a fondness for 13 Songs, memories of attempting to style his mohawk with egg whites, & no hooligan shenanigans or boot-stomps in this pit!)
10. Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns - Mother Love Bone
1) Most of the Time - Bob Dylan
2) Here Comes Your Man - Pixies

R.E.M.- Pop Song '89

*Charting songs:*
*Non Charting songs*
*Honorable Mentions:*
11. Mersey Paradise - B-Side to She Bangs the Drums - would have made the list, but didn't want too much Stones Roses.
12. Down In It - Nine Inc Nails
13. Free Fallin - Tom Petty (for Jason)
14. Head On - Jesus and Mary Chain
15. Wave of Mutilation - Pixies
Great picks!
Mother Love Bone finally gets some respect! Awesome wildcard pick Kram and Joe.

A few other big favorites:
The Cure - “Fascination Street”
De La Soul - “Eye Know”
Faith No More - any of the first 4 songs on The Real Thing… probably “Epic” if I had to pick one
Beastie Boys - “The Sounds of Science”
Camper Van Beethoven - “Sweethearts”
Nine Inch Nails - “Something I Can Never Have”
King’s X - “Pleiades”
Tom Petty - “Free Fallin’”
Also, great call on “This One’s For The Children” as Jason’s worst song. Since I once heard the first 4 New Kids on the Block albums as a kid, I revisited them last year during my 80’s/early 90’s album deep dive, and Merry Merry Xmas was definitely the most horrifying of those. One of my rare 1 star albums.
Pleiades would be my 2nd pick off of Gretchen Goes to Nebraska
All great picks for SOTY! I want to vote for all of them.
This series has now reach it's half-time😯
My top for 1989:
1. Pixies - Gouge Away
2.The Cure - Lovesong
3. The Jesus & Mary Chain - Head On
4. The Stone Roses - She Bangs The Drums
5. Chris Isaak - Wicked Games
6. Bob Dylan - Most of the Time
7. Jello Biafra with DOA - Full Metal Jackoff
8. The B-52s - Roam
9. NoMeansNo - Rags and Bones
De La Soul is the closest I've come to including a hip hop artist so far. The 90s will probably take care of that somewhere
Wow, didn't expect a RHCP pick from you. From Californication on a fantastic band. Before that...not my thing. But great to see it in your list.
Taste The Pain by RHCP is also a great pick from Mother’s Milk - nearly made my list
1989:
Billboard:
Metallica - One (Came out in '88 but surprised that it charted this year so it lands here. Fantastic build, disturbing lyrics, filthy guitar solo at the end, iconic machine-gun snare parts, total classic.)
The Cure - Lullaby (Two picks from Disintegration land on my Billboard list. The first features a haunting guitar line, punchy bass, and fake synth strings that somehow don't sound cheesy. Gotta love it!)
The Cure - Fascination Street (Surprised this one charted! The hardest rocking tune of Disintegration, with a sick bass line.)
Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation 1814 (My favourite off of Rhythm Nation 1814. Great progression of the New Jack sound she started on Control but with a much harder edge, knocking snares, and gang vocals on the hook that hint towards the choruses of tons of 90's rap bangers.)
Madonna - Like a Prayer (One of her best singles. There's a definite trend in late 80's pop of throwing in a gospel choir to make it sound more epic, and this is the best implementation of that trope.)
Wild Card:
Blue Nile - The Downtown Lights (Immaculately produced sophisti-pop right here. The perfect track for a late night drive back home in a cab after a night of casual drinks with friends while you look out the window at the neon lights whizzing by.)
Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus (Charted in '90 but sticking it here. No other song has ever managed to capture its cowboy-synth-punk style. Sexy lyrics too.)
Stone Roses - Fool's Gold (Dance-rock classic. Slinky guitar line combined with a break beat that never stops leads to an essential track in the Madchester canon.)
808 State - Pacific (Pretty much the peak of acid-house music. What other song starts with loon calls!)
Worst: Milli Vanilli - Girl You Know It's True (The worst of late 80's house and hip-hop rolled into one. Depressing that their producers could've chosen anyone for them to lip sync to and they chose guys who can barely rap at all. Dreadful.)
Best: Chris Isaak - Wicked Game (A shame that he's seen as a one-hit wonder since he has several great albums, but at least his one big hit is one of his best tunes. Endlessly sexy, especially on the hook with his falsetto.)
My Top Ten Songs of 1989
1)You've Got It - Simply Red
2)Slipping Away - The Rolling Stones
3)Rooms On Fire - Stevie Nicks
4)Almost Hear You Sigh - The Rolling Stones
5)I Won't Back Down - Tom Petty
6)The End Of The Innocence - Don Henley
7)My Paradise - The Outfield
8)Alice - Stevie Nicks
9)The House Is Rockin' - Stevie Ray Vaughan
10)Mixed Emotions - The Rolling Stones

Top 5;
5)About a Girl-Nirvana-This was two years before they broke, but this remains maybe their of their best ballad
4)Rocking in the Free World-Neil Young-This was the rock anthem of '89,which unfortunately has become somewhat ironic today.
3)Dirty Blvd-Lou Reed-Simple and direct, this paints a portion of the crack ridden ,crime ridden NYC of the '80's,before the clean up.
2)Most of the Time-Bob Dylan-This was the return to form for Dylan, proof that he had a lot left. One of his most enduring ballads.
1)Garden of Earthly Delights-XTC-Iv'e never heard a richer pop-rock song than this,so much going on melodically and texturally,my favorite XTC song, one of the best songs of the decade
Kramzer just gets my vote with. “ Hey “ over “ I Wanna Be Adored” which is great but not my favourite Stone Roses track off that killer album
Great song of the year pick Joe. “I Wanna Be Adored” is a masterpiece, and you talked about it perfectly.

(Honourable Mentions: Tears for Fears - Sowing the Seeds of Love, Roxette - The Look, Billy Joel - We Didn’t Start the Fire, Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus, Holly Johnson - Americanos, Debbie Gibson - Over the Wall)

3. Eurythmics - Sylvia [Now my favorite Eurythmics song. Very unique, a gothic ‘Eleanor Rigby’.]
2. The Cure - Pictures of You [My favorite Cure song atm. Full of beautiful melodies and heartbreaking vocals/lyrics.]
SONG OF THE YEAR 1989: Madonna - Dear Jessie [A fantastic song. This song has something to it that I haven’t understood yet. But I know it’s very special.]
Good call on the Madonna tracks. Spanish Eyes was a late cut for me.
Dear Jessie is so cool. It's so out of the box. The sound of the song reminds me of a cartoon or carnival.

Honourable mentions to :-
Sowing the Seeds(of Love) - Tears for Fears(their last great work).

You Keep It All In - The Beautiful South.
I'll Sail This Ship Alone - The Beautiful South(sorry, I'm a fan of the band and Paul Heaton).

1980s Stats:
65 unique artists
12 Artists with 3+ Nominations - Prince (5), Clash (4), Talking Heads (4), R.E.M. (4), Pixies (3), The Cure (3), INXS (3), Bowie (3), Peter Gabriel (3), The Replacements (3), Bruce Springsteen (3), Mission of Burma (3)

Hello Eric: i am compiling my stats now. I know REM will have the most nominations/wins. Very cool to see Adam Ant represented on your list.
Edit:
Hey! We have the same number of unique artists at 65. I'm counting Tom Petty with or without the Heartbreakers as one artist. Same for Adam with or without the Ants. Blondie and Deborah Harry counted as two unique artists. :
Most nominations: REM with 9 - two of which are SOTY (1984 - So.

BILLBOARD
1. *Lovesong by The Cure #2* (What a track to be their big stateside hit. I just adore that prominent organ sound on the verses.)
2. *Lullaby by The Cure #74* (Creepy, melodic gothic rock.)
3. *Handle With Care by The Traveling Wilburys #63* (Incredibly catchy roots rock. Great use of the stacked talent involved.)
4. *Like a Prayer by Madonna #1* (Irresistible blend of art and dance pop. Gotta love Prince on guitar too, though I have to say that the Immaculate version is my favorite.)
5. *One by Metallica #35* (Nailing the metal ballad again with chill acoustic moments to go along with the head banging.)
WILDCARD
1. WINNER: *I Wanna Be Adored by The Stone Roses* (The rather authoritative and atmospheric opening in what I'd consider a masterpiece of a record.)
2. *All the Way by New Order* (Realizing they've had a standout track for me almost yearly throughout the 80s. This might be one of their greatest blends of song and production.)
3. *Here Comes Your Man by Pixies* (At their absolute catchiest and most accessible without sacrificing a thing. That surfy guitar is so fun.)
4. *All I Want Is You by U2 #83* (It's like they took a traditional Irish folk song and turned it into a shimmering ballad in their trademark style. Great.)
5. *Made of Stone by The Stone Roses* (I actually forget how good this one is until I hear it again. It's like British Invasion filtered through hazy alt rock.)
I really enjoyed the selection this year. Ending a truly fun decade on a great note. Billboard isn't going to go back to what it was, but it's not a struggle just yet.
Worst TOP 40: Me So Horny by The 2 Live Crew #26 (Dang, there were some really terrible contenders this year. If you can handle the title being uttered repeatedly with "Me love you long time" throughout, you've got the lamest of hip hop to look forward to from there.)

I limited my picks to one song per artist, because otherwise the list would be like half Stone Roses and the rest from Tom Petty, Pixies and The Cure. I don't know if it's cheating to put "Series of Dreams" on the list, but it was recorded in 1989 and I just think it's so much better than everything else on Oh Mercy. "You Got It" was a great pick from Jason, and it could probably make it into my top 10 as well If I were to redo it.

4. Georgia Satellites - All Over but the Cryin' (Not every breakup is a breakdown, some proudly make their point and then quit.)
3. Replacements - I'll Be You (My #1 Mats song.)
2. Cure - Lovesong (For many Cure fans Disintegration is a untouchable master work but though I like the band, I prefer other albums. Still, this is a great song - and it is a good album, just not their best.)
1. Alice Cooper - Poison (Like for most music lovers of my age, his great time was in the 70s when it was the band of this name and not just the singer. Anyway, he often had a little jewel on his competent-but-not-great later day albums and this may be the best of them.)
Whatttttt, Poison??? This is my favorite pick for you ever. Also everything else is good too. Wow. - Joe
Oh Mercy not eligible for you this year?
@@12spanku Man in the Long Black Coat would be on some extended list...but the album is one I rarely pick up anymore. Lanois just overdid it.

My favorites from the 1989 playlist...Jason has a win! (rare for me) While I like Joe's selected Kate Bush song as well, "Love and Anger" is just spectacular in every way. Haven't heard this album before (or any song on it)...gotta catch up on that.
1. Kate Bush- Love and Anger
2. The Cure- Pictures of You
3. The Stone Roses- I Wanna Be Adored

Worst: There were a few to choose from but I going to go with "Birthday Suit" by Johnny Kemp.
Hi Vanessa, Buffalo Stance is so sassy - I love it!

I remember 1989 as a pivotal year in music, at least on a local level. The city I lived in got it's first "alternative" rock station and suddenly bands that NEVER got played on the radio were being heard by a bigger audience. Anyhoo, my top 5's...

I voted for Stone Roses but it was a close call with the Pixies in the mix and I also love Oh Mercy so a tough choice. Usually it's a lot easier. Great picks guys!
If ‘87 was possibly my favourite year for albums, then 1989 has got to be one of the best for songs:
Billboard Top 100:
Like A Prayer - Madonna
Janie’s Got A Gun - Aerosmith
Lovesong - The Cure
Runnin’ Down A Dream - Tom Petty
Wildcards:
Have I Told You Lately? - Van Morrison
Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Wicked Game - Chris Isaak
The Sensual World - Kate Bush
Let Love Rule - Lenny Kravitz
Worst song: Girl You Know It’s True - Milli Vanilli
(Any song by these fraudsters is a contender for this award. I have chosen this one because it was their biggest seller and therefore made most money under false pretences)
Song of the Year: Sowing The Seeds Of Love - Tears For Fears
(Of course it’s heavily influenced by The Beatles but that’s no bad thing. I’m sure that the Fab Four would have been proud to have created this musical masterpiece)
I normally limit myself to 10 Honourable Mentions (5 Billboard and 5 Wildcards) but that has been doubled just for this year because it was so stacked with great songs:
HMs - Billboard:
You Got It - Roy Orbison
The Look - Roxette
When I See You Smile - Bad English
Cuddly Toy - Roachford
Fire Woman - The Cult
Rooms On Fire - Stevie Nicks
Eternal Flame - Bangles
Jackie Brown - John Mellencamp
The Living Years - Mike & The Mechanics
Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode
HMs - Wildcards:
The Road To Hell - Chris Rea
You’re Gone - Del Amitri
Crossfire - Stevie Ray Vaughan
The Pass - Rush
I Don’t Want A Lover - Texas
Fools Gold - Stone Roses
Dry County - B-52’s
Soul Crying Out - Simple Minds
Rockin’ In The Free World - Neil Young
Pacific 202 - 808 State
Hello Bryan: Cool ist as always.
I especially like your Madonna, Tom Petty, Chris Isaak, Tears For Fears, Bangles and Roxette choices 🙂
It appears there are about seven songs unfamiliar to me, which I will listen to hopefully this evening.
Arguably, my ultimate song of the year would be the full album version of I am the Resurrection by The Stone Roses:
New York Minute - Don Henley
Head On - The Jesus and Mary Chain
Running' Down a Dream - Tom Petty
She's a Mystery to Me - Roy Orbison
Here Comes Your Man - The Pixies
Monkey Gone to Heaven - The Pixies
Good Times - Reid
Made of Stone - The Stone Roses
She Bangs the Drums - The Stone Roses
Can't be Sure - The Sundays

1989 - not necessarily in that order.
Disintegration is flawless

I loved this! Great to see Steel Wheels, Stone Roses, and Dylan get very honourable mentions! What a great year to hit 20 89 was!!
Steel Wheel shouldn’t have even been mentioned. Mixed Emotions is such a generic safe “hit” type song for the Stones. Just goes to show that nothing after Tattoo You is worth your time.
