- Welcome to our Songs of the Year series. Today we're looking at 1994!
Every Friday we will each be choosing our favorite songs of a year, starting in 1958 and going all the way through 2021. We will be making five selections from the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Any song that broke the Hot 100 at any point during the year is eligible. After that we'll be making five more 'wildcard' selections. These picks can come from anywhere. They could've charted as well, but they could also be album cuts, from soundtracks, b-sides...anything at all. And lastly, we'll also be choosing our least favorite song to crack the Top 40.

Worst Chart Song- "I Swear" - All For One
Wait, did Buckley's Hallelujah actually chart? Would have been on my list if so
It charted in 2006. Not it 94. After someone sang it on American Idol.
@@TimeToGetAlone no it didn’t .. stuffed up there 😬..had a late sub on stand by ..thank you so much ✌🏿
@@TastesLikeMusic I see a bunch of covers did, but not his. On the bright side, Cohen's eligible for 2016.
"Lover You Should've Come Over" is my favourite song from my favourite album so I was very happy Jason Picked it right at the end. Can't go wrong with any of the 3 though! Are you guys not into Portishead?
I noticed the Portishead omission but they only get 5 tracks not on Billboard & I picked Dream Brother & saw Forget Her ( not on the original release ) get a mention. It's an amazing album Grace.
I think they hate electronic music, you can see that on the ranking of the 00's albums of Madonna
I stuck by their rules with my list and just couldn't get any Portishead on there, despite Dummy being one of my favourite albums of '94. I thought Sour Times or Wandering Star would be eschewing but apparently not.

Iris Dement rules. Love her work with Tom Russell!
@@mattymac1399 Yes, I just love her voice. I wasn’t familiar with their collaboration, thanks for the tip! Big Water is a pretty good track. Do you know In Spite Of Ourselves, a duet of hers with John Prine? It’s amazing.
@Beetlebum I am not sure if I have. I dig me some John Prine, will have a listen. Ta for the heads-up. She did other tracks with Russell, such as Box of Visions and stuff on his Man From God Knows Where album. Cool lady.
Good call again on The Tindersticks. They're also one of my favorite bands of the 90s, but Kathleen it's not among my favorites
Funk, on a whole new level. The rhythm is the bass and the bass is the treble.
1) Thallosacracy - Frank Black (WC). Thin Lizzy's don't say a word has nothing on this. 1:33 long with a bridge and a guitar solo. Pure punk perfection.
2) What's the Frequency, Kenneth? - R.E.M. (21). R.E.M.'s Monster has really grown on me over the years, and this has become one of my favorite R.E.M. songs. Just super catchy and rockin'.
3) Sure Shot - Beastie Boys (WC). Great track from Ill Communication. Love the flute loop.
4) Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley (WC). Jeff had a cool, soulful sound that didn't really sound like much else in 1994. Really killer track.
5) Headache - Frank Black (WC). Frank Black makes another appearance with this super catchy tune that changes keys a bunch of times.
6) Fade into You - Mazzy Star (44). Beautiful, dream pop classic from the '90s.
7) Sabatoge - Beastie Boys (WC). The Beastie Boys ditch hip-hop for this fuzzed out funky rocker.
8) Low - Cracker (64). I'd guess this is the only Cracker song most people know, and it is great, but the entire Kerosene Hat album is terrific.
9) Bad Reputation - Freedy Johnston (54). Cool kind of Americana pop tune. I don't know much else about Freedy Johnston, although his name confuses me.
10) C.R.E.A.M. - Wu-Tang Clan (60). Really inventive Hip-Hop sound compared to the West Coast stuff that was popular at the time. An all-time classic. Dolla dolla bill, y'all.
Beastie Boys in the house!
@@ttmilbr More to come in the 90s.
Three Buckley songs and still not a match for us. Agreed with your pick though
Hi Eric, I really like Cracker’s Euro-Trash Girl
@@michelewiese48 That's a great tune! That whole album is fantastic.

Hey Everyone! We’re fully into my high school years. Floral baby doll dresses, platform Mary Janes, Italian crème sodas & games of pool at the coffee house, Manic Panic, flannel shirts, ringer tees, all ages shows, candy necklaces, wine coolers, the glossy pages of Sassy magazine, local band posters taped to trees & light posts, white Dickies painter’s pants, thermals, crack house busts with SWAT teams in my neighborhood, flight jackets, JNCOs, thrift store odds & ends, and my beloved paisley velvet Vans. (When I wasn’t wearing my blessed school uniform) A sentimental journey, here we go.

2. Do You Love Me? - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (had a difficult time choosing a song from Let Love In) Peak Cave? Quite possibly
3. Closer (Deviation) - Nine Inch Nails - Saw the Further Down The Spiral Tour with The Jim Rose Circus Sideshow - a Valentine’s Day I will never forget! This version from the Closer To God single is the best. Reptile also rocks my world. Such a close call I had to mention it.
4. Speedway - Morrissey (more Power Tools!)
5. A Girl Like You - Edwyn Collins (Timeless)

I'd forgotten about that Edwyn Collins tune. Great stuff.

Nice shoutout on Forget Her.

As for Greenday, I'm not a fan.
The rest I like, with a few in common as usual
@@frangarcia7774 Hello Fran. I appreciate the comments. I used to be a bigger fan, but still love the Green Day albums from 94-97. If you get a chance check out the Inspiral Carpet songs from Devil Hopping (the last album before a very long break) which I listed above.
Good morning NVG. Well, we matched a little bit with REM, STP and Weezer this year. I also like your Tom Petty picks, Backwater, Basket Case and Bang & Blame.
Of the first time listens, Insomniac takes top honors this week. I also thought Uniform, Night In My Veins and Supernova were good.
Have a good weekend NVG. If you're so inclined to provide it, feedback is welcome. Take care my friend.
@@brentjackson6839 Good Morning Brent!
Hey . . Checked out your list yesterday. Very impressive.
I noticed a few matches as well . . This year the 90s artists took over - Liz Phair, Veruca Salt, of course Suede . . New bands coming up next year incl Sleeper and Elastica (which some here are mentioning already) . . Mid 90's were an excellent time for music . .
Will do a little more listening and then drop a comment . . Have a great weekend, my friend!
@@NaughtyVampireGod Hi Naughty. Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to listen to any of the albums you recommended last week. I like Supernova, so I will try to listen to the Whip-Smart album sometime soon. The more I hear of Inspiral Carpets, the more I am reminded of early Stranglers music (I don’t know any Stranglers albums but love most of their singles from the late 70s and early 80s). Saturn 5 particularly struck a chord with me - I think I might have heard it previously.
There are a few other artists in your list that I will need to come back to you about, including J&MC, Veruca Salt and Angelfish. I will aim to do that before Friday, provided I can get my 95 list settled by then.
Enjoy the rest of your week my friend.

You may gather that I really love Suede 1994! 1994 is full throttle Britpop with great albums from Oasis and Blur, but better ones from Echobelly and especially Suede. Saw Suede play Dog Man Star at Royal Albert Hall in 2014-the best gig I’ve ever been too. Seen Echobelly several times-always great 😊 Loved the Kylie song since I first heard it-just class!
Dog Man Star is a great album. I love the mix of Bowie / Scott Walker influence on it. The Power is probably my favourite track from it even if it is a bit derivative of Bowie's Moonage Daydream.
Hello Simon. Suede fan here. I also love Sleeper who never broke here in the US. You a fan? They really had their moment in the UK from what I gather. (I'm just another Sleeperbloke . . 😀)
@@NaughtyVampireGod Hi I never really got into Sleeper. Louise Wener was always very quotable though😊No doubt she still is ! I read somewhere that they’d reunited. Rather like Suede and Echobelly😊
@@simonstaniforth8936 Yeah. i wasn't that thrilled w Sleeper's reunion album. Suede is the 90's band with the best reunion - - the only one where the new material was actually as good as their earlier stuff.

"One Time" is a top 10 King Crimson tune in my book.
HM - Love Spit Love - Change in the Weather, Liz Phair - Supernova, Sparks - When Do I Get to Sing My Way, Nick Lowe - I Live on a Battlefield, Meat Puppets - Flaming Heart
5. Bob Dylan - Dignity (An unreleased song from the Oh Mercy sessions that was remixed for a Greatest Hits compilation and also released as a single. One of those many Dylan vault songs that are as great as his album tracks. Warning: avoid the MTV Unplugged disaster by all means.)
4. Chumbawamba - Timebomb (Danceable anarchy? Or a mouthful of shit as another song on the album suggests. Extremely clever. When her voice becomes angelic she is ready to piss in the wine at dinner.)
3. Golden Earring - Angel (An unusual track from the Netherlands's longest running band - and in fact one of rock music's most lasting bands, formed 1961 they announced their retirement due to illness of founding guitarist George Kooymans in 2021. Mostly acoustic and live in their home studio it kicks off their album Face It, which was not released in the US. The same album contains the furious rocker Legalize Telepathy.)
2. Swans - Celebrity Lifestyle (A single released as precursor of their 1995 album, almost a rock song...and this turned out to be one of the weakest songs on The Great Annihilator!)
1. REM - What's the Frequency Kenneth (REM was a rock band - they just did not know it before.)
So good to see Sparks on your list but the one I'm impressed with, is the phenomenal Nick Lowe with I Live On A Battlefield. That is a fantastic song that I'm really hoping he will play live when I go to see him next month in Birmingham. Front row seat🎸
@@jesuschambers Good luck - but then, you are already a winner by seeing him live from a front seat...

BILLBOARD
1. WINNER: *Dreams by The Cranberries #42* (Their best. Adore the dreamy verses and drums, in particular.)
2. *Mother by Danzig #43* (Really cool hard rock from the late 80s shows up a half-decade later on the charts.)
3. *Fade Into You by Mazzy Star #44* (The pretty, mellow side of dream pop.)
4. *Streets of Philadelphia by Bruce Springsteen #9* (The other end of the Philadelphia soundtrack, and great sombre pop/rock in its own right.)
5. *Laid by James #61* (Maybe its the American Pie association, but this feels like alt rock made for a 90s dorm.)
WILDCARD
1. *This Is a Low by Blur* (Brilliant Britpop cut off of Parklife.)
2. *Last Goodbye by Jeff Buckley* (My current favorite off of Grace. There is a really nice acoustic punch to this one.)
3. *Buddy Holly by Weezer* (Solid blend of the era's power pop sound with some retro 60s simplicity.)
4. *Coax Me by Sloan* (This power pop song has really shot up my rankings. Super catchy with just the right amount of melancholy.)
5. *Say It Ain't So by Weezer* (The more head-banging counterpart from the Blue Album.)
Top 10 Wildcard HM:
The Man Who Sold the World by Nirvana
The Billboard this time around is filled with carryovers, but it's a good crop, while the wildcards benefit from some great albums of the era. Not up to my peak of the previous eras, but I quite like this mid-90s period that will go for the next couple of years. A good time for alternative music.
Worst TOP 40: Short Dick Man by 20 Fingers featuring Gillette #14 (If the subject matter doesn't already sink it, I can't say the glitchy repetitive house style helps much either.)
Worst Runner Up:
Completely by Michael Bolton #32
It's truly baffling how many hits Michael Bolton had in the 90s and how few grunge songs hit the charts.
@@SomeSong2 Feel like charts became pretty unreliable in the 90s until they relaxed their criteria.
Completely might be the worst I've heard from him. He pushes his voice past the limit on that one.

I saw Warrior Soul live on that tour supporting Voodoocult in Europe. Cool gig. I was really into Space Age Playboys at the time. Was it their only punk album? Haven’t listened to it in ages. I kinda lost track of them after that. Let’s Get Waysted is definitely a highlight.
@@beetlebum7760 I bet that was a cool show. Never saw them, myself.
Warrior Soul disbanded in '95 and Kory Clarke formed a short-lived band actually called Space Age Playboys in '97. The music was still "acid punk," as Kory called it, but the lyrics and image were more about partying.
They reformed in '07 and have been releasing material since, with an album coming out this year (if it isn't already). But, honestly (and coming from someone who loved WS back in the 90s), the quality of material has declined with each release. And Clarke's voice is totally shot.

Man, I really hope Jeff Buckley's song gets the most votes.
I picked Dream Brother ..

Leonard Cohen's song is in the lead . .

5 Night in my Veins - The Pretenders. Chrissie Hynde is a good bad girl and that makes her music great. "He's got his chest on her back across a new Cadillac and then she's got her head on the curb and she can't produce a word". I have sometimes, after a beer too many, thought about starting a RUclips channel that ranks the tracks from a single album (although ultimately I'm nowhere near telegenic enough). But if you guys want to steal the concept one day, Grace seems like an obvious place to start on this evidence?

@@NaughtyVampireGod Well, alright, I guess I liked "Crush With Eyeliner" and maybe "Circus Envy." But there were a string of albums from all the bands that I loved in college that I found disappointing: U2's "Zooropa," Nirvana's "In Utero," Sugar's "File Under: Easy Listening," R.E.M.'s "Monster," the Stone Roses' "Second Coming" and Elvis Costello's "Kojak Variety." Later on, U2 released "Pop" and that was the final cut. A whole lot of disappointment on my end. Newly released music had stopped being relevant in my life for the most part.

What a beautiful moment for the Guys.. almost makes me wanna give Jeff Buckley another shot…almost. Your enthusiastic smiles are worth gold anyhow!
You should see them when they talk about Rush, hard not to call the doctor - I always have to remind myself that it is already recorded before...
It’s the little things in life 😊
@@michelewiese48 Hi Michele . . I think we are fellow travelers again . . I tried getting into Jeff Buckley's music several times in past . . Never stuck w me at all . . he's got many fans here, though.
Hi Naughty, I feel like it’s an album I’m “supposed” to like. Just doesn’t resonate & I’m not sure why…but yes, the more for his many fans. We can’t all always be on the same page, but it is a cool feeling when it happens.

5) Loser-Beck(The biggest hit from the guy who melded hip hop style with art-pop better than anyone else)
4)Range Life-Pavement(The song that got all the alt bands in a tizzy because they could'nt take a joke, this proved that these masters of the abrasive sound could write good melodies as well)
3)Red Right Hand-Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds(very cool,very creepy,this was in a bunch of movie soundtracks)
2)Fell On Black Days-Soundgarden(propulsive,menacing and dark, Cornell sings this with controlled fury)
1)New Zandu-Latin Playboys(The best track on one of the best albums of the decade, and best of '94,the guitar tone on this is killer)

2. Hallelujah- Jeff Buckley
1. See Below
Worst Song- I Swear- All 4 One- This song was overplayed to the point of annoyance. That's it.
Song of the Year- London's Brilliant Parade-Elvis Costello- I think the Brutal Youth album is pretty strong, it has too many songs on it, but this one is my favorite. A return to pure pop for 90's Elvis.
I just figured out that Afghan Whig's Gentlemen was 1993, but it totally deserves to be on one of these lists.
All three of you lose because Lilac Wine is the correct choice from Grace. 😉 But aside from that I gotta go with Kramzer and Hallelujah.

Hallelujah my vote! For its complex simplicity. Thanks again, guys.
Love that Jeff Buckley love. What’s funny is you guys listed three different tracks while my 1994 fave song was “Last Goodbye” by Jeff Buckley. That’s a sign of a true masterpiece to have so many amazing and timeless songs on one album.
That's so great you all picked a different Buckley song. Lover You Should Have Come Over is my favorite of the year, but there's no wrong choice there.
My favorite year in music. Hands down.
Songs not mentioned:

“My Life” by Iris Dement
“Your Favorite Thing” by Sugar
“Ping Pong” by Stereolab

Quite the quandary with the Buckley selections. I have to go with “Grace” because as amazing as “Hallelujah” is, I can’t vote for a cover.
Cheers
That " Difficult " 2nd Stone Roses 🌹 album. I still have it figuring one day it might click for me but I'm still waiting for that day ! 😆
@@davidellis5141 It definitely has a different sound to it than their first. The “classic rock” influences are a lot more obvious, but it’s still a good album.
@@TheDigitalGramophone Joe Buck ✍ to ESPN ! Who will do the World Series & Playoffs ? 🤔
@@davidellis5141 I’m glad he won’t be calling the WS anymore. I am scared of who his replacement might be, though. I forgot to say it’s celebration time that the lockout is over! I wish the Braves would sign Freddie now that they have DH. But probably going to your Yankees.
@@TheDigitalGramophone It's about time the NL adds the DH. I know the purists will hate it but it helps keep veterans viable & they come in handy in playoff situations like Wade Boggs in 1996. Best walk ever !

1994 is probably the first year where I have struggled to find at least 10 Billboard songs I really like. This situation is only going to get worse during the rest of the series:
Billboard Top 100:
Love Sneakin’ Up On You - Bonnie Raitt
I’ll Stand By You - Pretenders
Can You Feel The Love Tonight - Elton John
Fade Into You - Mazzy Star
Secret - Madonna
Wildcards:
Grace - Jeff Buckley (Joe gets my vote)
You Wreck Me - Tom Petty
Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey
Worst song: Incredible - M-Beat & General Levy
(I’m not a fan of rap to begin with but I find it impossible to understand at least 90% of these lyrics. It just sounds like an unintelligible rant to me)
Song of the Year: Kiss From A Rose - Seal
(A hauntingly beautiful melody that is perfectly suited to Seal’s distinctive vocals, with fabulous production by Trevor Horn)
HMs - Billboard:
All I Wanna Do - Sheryl Crow
Loser - Beck
When We Dance - Sting
What’s The Frequency, Kenneth? - REM
7 Seconds - Youssou N’Dour & Neneh Cherry
HMs - Wildcards:
Parklife - Blur
Live Forever - Oasis
Glory Box - Portishead
Only To Be With You - Roachford
Wearing The Inside Out - Pink Floyd
Hi Bryan. I enjoyed checking out your nice list of songs! While we only matched on REM and Oasis, Fade Into You and Loser just missed my cut. I also like your Pretenders, Elton and Sheryl Crow picks.
There were a few I needed to check out. I was pretty sure I just hadn't heard the Madonna and Bonnie Raitt tracks in a long time. That was the case. Both are good songs. Of the completely unfamiliar to me, You Wreck Me was my favorite. Thought the Roachford cut was enjoyable too.
Glad to hear any feedback re: my list if you're so inclined. Enjoy the weekend, my friend.
How are you my friend? Billboard is a wasteland. I had Mazzy Star on my 94 list. As always we have our share of sames incl HMs - Tom Petty (Wreck Me is also my fave from Wildflowers - JUST missing my top 10 . . if I applied the "one artist" rule he probably would be there but I needed to have two songs by Inspiral Carpets this year) . . Black Hole Sun a strong HM for me - and one of my favorite videos! - Seal song is great but just not in my wheelhouse . . Okay, Bryan, hope you get this! Talk to u later.
@@brentjackson6839 Hey Brent - It appears that the three of us each have You Wreck Me as a favorite from Tom's 94 album (?)
@@brentjackson6839 Hi Brent, I’m sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I haven’t been very well for the last few days, so it was all I could do to post my choices for 1994. I didn’t even manage to listen to your songs from 1993 that I don’t know. This means there is a lot of catching up to do in the next few days!
Thanks for your feedback as always, my friend. I’d forgotten how good Secret was until I listened to it again last week. I’m not a big fan of Madonna but she has released some very good songs during her long career - a bit like Bonnie Raitt in that respect. To my mind, you can’t go far wrong with any Tom Petty song, and he will continue to feature regularly in my lists for the next 20 years. It’s also good to hear you liked Roachford. I would be interested to know how much attention he (they) received in USA. He was quite successful over here during the 90s without ever being a major star.
I will check out your 1994 list and let you know my thoughts. At some point, I will try to revisit 1993 as well. Take care and have a great week.
@@NaughtyVampireGod Hi Naughty. Much like I said to Brent above, I haven’t been feeling great for a few days, which is why I didn’t get back to your last post from the 1993 list. I have likewise got some listening to do from your previous choices, although I will start with the ones from 1994 and get back to you about those first.
I understand that Seal’s music won’t be for everyone (life would be boring if it was) but it fits in well alongside the polished AOR / adult contemporary / mainstream rock that I tend to enjoy listening to. Grunge is definitely not my usual choice but I made an exception for Black Hole Sun, which I really like. A bit like Pearl Jam and Nirvana, who also appeared once in my lists, I tend to like individual songs rather than the band’s whole output. I’m not familiar with the video, so that is something else I must check out.
Take care my friend.
My 1994 top:
1. Oasis - Supersonic
2. Pulp - Do you remember the first time
3. Portishead - Sour Times
4. Beastie Boys - Sabotage
5. Nas - The World is Yours
6. Supergrass - Caught By The Fuzz
7. Morrissey - Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself
8. The Pretenders - I'll Stand By You
9. Edwyn Collins - A Girl Like You
10. dEUS - Suds & Sod
I grew up in the 1990s but I never heard of Jeff Buckley prior to watching all of your videos. I decided to hear "Grace" and I was blown away by his singing and song writing (pretty unique voice). So thank you all for introducing me to new music.
I also found out about his father Tim Buckley (who also died young) and heard one of his songs on Sirius Deep Tracks. Did yall ever go over his stuff on this channel?
Haven’t done Tim yet. But plan to someday. - Joe
Lover You Should’ve Come Over is the one! God, what a beautiful song.
And I thought I was alone in hating "Don't Take the Girl." Thanks, Kram, for the validation some 28 years later.
Gosh, 3 classic Buckley songs, how am i supposed to vote on this and pick one
1) Corduroy -Pearl Jam 2) Spoonman -Soundgarden 3) Cut Your Hair -Pavement 4) Miss World -Hole 5) What's the Frequency, Kenneth? -R.E.M. 6) Nightmare Be thy Name -Mercyful Fate 7) Rhyme & Reason -Dave Matthews Band 8) Yog Bar Og -Ozric Tentacles 9) Soulshine -Allman Brothers 10) Backwater -Meat Puppets 11) Beetlebum -Blur 12) N.O. -Kyuss 13) Sour Times -Portishead 14) Mascara Tears -Richard Thompson 15) Buddy Holly -Weezer 16) Begging You -Stone Roses 17) Prime of Life -Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Soulshine will appear in a later year on my list, the Gov't Mule version is very different and although the Allman Brothers are among my great bands, for this song I go with Warren Haynes' other approach to the song.
And...you put me into a dilemma - will I try Mirror Blue again today knowing that Mitchell Froom's butchery of one of my most beloved artists awaits me?
goodness on your list also alot of the same groups for sure !who are ozric tentacles my friend? cheers!🐯🐯
@@bengalgangster Ozric Tentacles are more or less Ed Wynne with changing line-ups for the last 40 years...Long instrumentals, a bit of Hawkwind, Gong, Steve Hillage, psychedelic with the rhythm of Guru Guru. Their style has not changed much, just they became more and more technically versed over time (their early albums were often self-made cassettes). Album titles containing words like Swirling, Spiral, Sliding Gliding Worlds say a lot.
Erpland or The Yum Yum Tree are good starting points to explore the band, (stay away from the remix or archive albums).
@@roxannewalsh thanx and agree with mules soulshine . !
@@roxannewalsh That'll work!- heard almost all of 'em and that Mule is probably my fave. Froom can go a bit overboard: No "dignity" in Down in the Groove, up with Rumour & Sigh and Kiko, down with Mirror Blue and Colossal Head. Likely a number of Mirror Blue tracks live albums but that's a lot to sort through!
I'm very happy you three could have a great harmonic convergence in this moment. It is pretty amazing. If it's not too late to vote I will go with Lover, You Should Have Come Over. I'd never even heard it. I love Hallelujah. Grace is great but too discordant for me. And I didn't know he was Tim Buckley's son, and went and downloaded Once I Was by Tim, another amazing song.
