    1977 & 1978 were two years as a Yankee fan I'll never forget. Reggie absolutely owned New York. Those three home runs in game 6 in 77 made him a living legend. 78 was a year Holywwod couldn't script.

    His home run trot was beautiful. He commanded every fans attention like a Mays, Mantle, Gibson, Koufax, Ryan, Ozzie. Baseball today doesn't have these kind of Superstars. It's a money grab and longterm contracts. How many players today are 5'ers ? Can hit with power, hit for average, throw, run, play defense. In today's game you hit .265, hit 35 HR'S, and drive in 100 Runs you'll make 15/18/25 million per year. It's a joke. A bad joke. In 20 years time there'll be no new HOF'ers. You play 10 years and the players become high net worth guys.

    I love Reggie, he was a beast for the Yankees when I was a little kid. I was 12 when he left the Yankees, and that ripped my heart out. I think Steinbrenner said that was his biggest mistake. It sure was up there along with the way he treated Billy, the greatest manager I’ve ever seen...

    The Yankees have always been my team, but you couldn't have been a baseball fan in the early '70s and not have knowledge of what the A's were doing in the league. Campaneris, Bando, Tenace, Rudi, the original Blues (Vida and Odom), Holtzman, and Reggie and their near-dominance of the league was all anyone was talking about, even in New York. Then the shift occurred in '76 and the Dodgers became *the* West Coast team, while the Yankees became stronger and stronger each year Steinbrenner owned the team. George was about winning, but he respected those who brought value to the team and the city. Reggie was my first baseball hero and I will never forget those championships of the '70s.

    It's so close, it should have been Reggie's call, and it was. The Yankees were his most iconic club, as Reggie in pinstripes defines the 1970s. And he played in more WS with the Yankees. But the A's had more years with Reggie, more good years with Reggie, and had a fair amount of Reggie-ness in their 1970s legacy. So it's close, and it's good Reggie made that call.

Also he had his greatest moment & baseball's greatest moment 3 straight Homer's off the first pitch off 3 diff pitchers to 3 parts of the park. The last homer was a monster to dead center 417 plus feet. That's why! He was great & a hof already in Oakland but became a legend & " mr October " with the yankees. To do this in front of the world 's biggest stage with a lot of pressure on his back he sealed his fate as one of the greatest ever.

      His big pay day was in New York and the Orioles could not compete with that. Hank Peters the Orioles GM later said if he knew how crazy the salaries in Baseball would get the Orioles would have resigned him. Reggies Yankee contract was 5 years at 3.5 million which was a bargain looking in hindsight. The Orioles also lost some big players like Bobby Grich and Wayne Garland to free agency after the 76' season. Most of the old school owners did not want to buy into big money free agency during that time.

I know NBA players and I went to a Rockets game with my brother unwillingly because of how funny they act towards blacks and the Rockets had just finished warming up and T-Mac was heading to the locker room and he saw me and said: "what's up man?" I said: "what's up bro!" He had his hand out and we shook hand and chatted and the ushers were screaming and running toward me saying: "Hey what are you doing?" I was turning around looking at these cats and said: "He said what's up to me!" They said: "No you can't talk to them or shake their hands!" Very good point, and as much knowledge as Reggie has about the game, he has always been somewhat rude, self-absorbed, and very difficult (except when the media wanted to talk to him). Reggie wasn't denied work because of his race. The same year he was inducted an ex-teammate of his, Don Baylor, became the manager of the expansion Colorado Rockies.

    • @TheVCRTimeMachine

      Since 1972 there have been 470 managerial openings in Major League Baseball....227 different people have been hired to fill those openings...10 black men were hired as interim managers when the manger was fired, but only 17 black men have been given full-time positions....Dusty Baker has been fired 3 times after winning 90 games or more. Oakland is still one of five teams yet to hire a black manager....So I'm going to go ahead and say Reggie may possibly be on to something here.

    • @TheVCRTimeMachine
      @TheVCRTimeMachine 6 лет назад +3

      Oakland has never hired a black manager. Plenty of opportunities to do so. Plenty of guys who aren't "difficult" have been available. Yet they just haven't been able to find a qualified candidate I guess.

    • @cameron_fairchild
      @cameron_fairchild 6 лет назад

      true. really great players are known to be notoriously bad managers. frank robinson was only medicore as a skipper. (won no pennants. much less a series). series winners never had much of a career on the field so they were the true students of the game. your comment is on point. reggie was well-known as a stubborn-egoist and not front office or managerial timber. it'd be like barry bonds, mike singletary, or michael jordan; they would put too much pressure on their players in an uncompromising way like they were towards themselves. but that is not teaching, or leading. you have to be able to get the best out of the 7th and 8th place hitter and the middle reliever too. like lasorda, weaver, stengel, la russa, martin, pat riley, phil jackson... and all those scrub infielders, and bench players, learned how to do.

    • @dzanier
      @dzanier 5 лет назад

      I was about to say that. Reggie is a very intelligent person. He knows that blacks were getting jobs in baseball, maybe not too many front-office jobs, well before the late 80s early 90s. Reggie has never accepted the fact that some people find him overbearing. They don't resent him because he's black and overbearing, it's just the latter.

    Reggie is not being totally honest and truthful. He said 1988 he was denied entry into a game? He retired as an A'S in 1987! What period then did he work as an assistant hitting coach? If anybody ruined the situation it was reggie himself trying to be the lead of everything. Remember now the A's went to the world series in 1988, 1989, and 1990. They didn't need reggie with his ego. And the A's did retire his number 9 jersey.

    Reggie was great and spoke his mind but he was also a thin skinned Prima Donna.

    Love Reggie. Reggie will always be an Oakland A. The A's don't have the money that the Yankees have. Stienbrenner gave him money to go in a Yankee plain an simple. Fast forward to today though and he's in the athletics hall of fame. I guarantee today would be a different story and he goes in an athletic. The renegade was Charlie O not stienbrenner.

    REGGIE, JUST BUY A TEAM MAN! You didn't need those little odd 'assistant hitting coach' jobs ANYWHERE! Like you said in 1976 YOU MAKE YOUR OWN LUCK!

    Pulls the race card, while ignoring Frank Robinson, history, and logic itself.

    Must be nice not to accept responsibility for your actions and just blame it on the skin color. Big Reggie fan, but stating the obvious-He burnt a lot of bridges in this career.

    Reggie, Summer of Sam, 1977.....all due respect to the A's but Reggie is an all time Yankee. He really was the straw.
