Building big-wave surfboards is like building a parachute, they have to work. Therefore, board technology is as important as it gets for Ian Walsh. Meet Chris Christenson, the master craftsman responsible for creating the pieces of art Ian rides in Distance Between Dreams and learn how the two work together to make surfing 50-foot monster waves a possibility.

So, I wonder what you call a "big wave". I've been long boarding now for about 15 years. I only short boarded for about 15 years before that, now 31years total. When I short boarded the biggest wave I rode was about 25'. I was on a 6'6" RP at that time, kinda thick like 3 inches and fatter in the tail than the nose, thruster shape, it was early 90's about and I was used to taking off under the lip. I still do even with my longboards now. So now that I'm old(51) I like longboarding but refrain from anything over 18' hollow top to bottom. I live in NorCal and cold water floats our boards different than SoCal and Hawai'i. Often, because of upwelling our water is colder, therefore with less salt and buoyancy than Oregon and SoCal but our waves are still "big"(15~20' hollow top to bottom). I've always been a one board quiver kind of guy so what would you suggest, shape wise, for our standard 12 foot hollow waves in the 9 foot range for a 195lb guy. Middle girth with 70/30 rails? I shape my own now so I'm just wondering your opinion.
