I'm building a winter greenhouse in Northern US climate. I plan to do an aquaponics system with trout and this is what I would like to do. (Fish pond in the ground outside, and a mixture of grow beds outside and some in the greenhouse. We have long cold winters with several feet of snow. Do you ever have any problems with the pump pulling solids from the bottom of your pond? Most setups have the fish tank at the highest point and the overflow lifts the solids. What pump do you use, and do you target a certain amount of water changes per hour for the fish? I've been watching your videos for years and this system is fantastic. I plan to pump from the fish tank into a solids filter in my greenhouse, into some grow beds, and possibly into a DWC. I would have the DWC set at such a height to flow back to the fish pond.

Such a beautiful set-up Jonathan! Fascinating seeing how the fish seem curious about you. Have you ever heard of “tickling” trout? It is a method of catching them used by poachers in the UK. I think it is illegal in UK but I’m not sure. Of course it would be no problem for harvesting your own fish but I gather it needs a lot of patience.
    Thanks for the great video!

my grandfather always used to have carp in is irrigation tank and we would swim on it, i have since wondered if it would pe possible to swim with aquaponics fish, mainly tipalia, carp, cray fish and alburnos alburnos. or even maybe koi carp
this way a fish pond, pool, or dipping tank would be a pleasure alll year

Does the pond freeze hard where you are? I’m wondering if a setup like this would work in central Canada?

Great question mate! Here in Melbourne the winter temperatures are not too low. The water doesn’t even freeze. However I am moving to France and I will build a setup there. It will be interesting to see how it evolves during the coldest months

How deep is the pond? and what kind of filters are being used for the aquaponics system? Just a solid filter?
