Is the idea of treating nature as a commodity an inevitability of capitalism? If so, I wonder whether sustainable management is even possible within a capitalist society. There will always be corporations seeking to exploit natural resources, like we saw with that oil pipeline controversy. Since we live in a plutocracy, those corporations end up controlling the government, which is the only entity with the power to protect giant tracts of land like national parks. And as we saw under Trump, all it takes is one favorable administration for the CorpoRats to get exactly what they want and roll back all those environmental protections. Because who cares about biodiversity, right? I can just go to Walmart and buy whatever food I need, so there’s nothing to worry about. No concerns at all about that precipitous drop in agricultural yields 😂
