    I had a guitar center in Nashville call me a year later saying they found the case for a used acoustic guitar that I bought. They set it by the front counter for me and I came by and picked it up. I was stoked because I really liked the guitar, but was disappointed it didn't come with a case since it came with fitted case new.

    I live in NJ and have sold Guitar Center a boatload of guitars and basses over the past few years. They've always accepted my cases (if the guitar/bass had one) and have been glad to have them. That said, they've not paid me much extra for those cases. Last Saturday, for example, they gave me an extra $25 (wow!) for a Fender gig bag with my Fender Jazz bass. Anyway, for what that's worth. Love the podcast, Phil.

    • @jloiben12
      @jloiben12 Год назад +1

    • @billyshears6622
      @billyshears6622 Год назад

      Jim Lill's experiments are great but the one about guitar tone wood is just misleading. Let's put it this way. Sometimes you watch a pedal comparison and don't hear ANY difference but are suddenly shocked to hear the tester strongly favoring A over B because of FEEL. Also in that video he used a pretty gained up sound. In my experience the more gain you use the more the sound DOES just come from the pickups. Last, go to any store that has multiples of any guitar model and pick them up and play them all as if you're going to select one to buy. You don't even have to plug them in. One will likely stand out as the most resonant and you'll probably gravitate toward it. Most experienced guitar buyers that I've talked to don't even plug in at stores or if they do its the last thing they do. I have too much experience to believe that video and weirdly so does Jim. I appreciate these guys like him and JHS that strongly go about debunking guitar mythology, BUT IT'S NOT ALL BUNK. Jim Lill has his favorite guitar and gear just like everyone else, and wouldn't you know it all the pieces are easily recognizable as higly desirable ones by everyone. No Squires, no NUX pedals, etc... so cut the bullshit man. I will say that amp simulation video he did with that fishing tackle box and the chain of pedals to simulate vintage amps was F-ING BRILLIANT!!! 🤯 🏆💯 I also learned a LOT from the guitar cab one which was cool bc a coworker had just talked about foam board hi-fi speakers he found online and made for his garage and how great they sounded just few months prior. Jim's video was proof of that.

    • @nealixd.3011

      My experience is if they are selling a used instrument with a hardshell case or gig bag, they code the back of the sales tag with a T and sequential number to locate it in a room behind the main sales counter. I did have a negative turned positive experience at another GC, where they couldn't find the OHSC listed on the back of the sales tag, and the salesman just ordered me a brand new one. It took a couple days to get it, but was well worth the return trip since it was a $120 OHSC for an Ibanez AM93. That was cool. One salesman at my local GC got mad at me when I asked him to show me the OHSC for a 2004 Schecter Classic (in great shape with USA Seymour Duncans) and I also asked him to raise the bridge a hair, since the action was so low a few strings were buzzing. That sealed the deal for me when he did both, even though he complied with a little bit of an attitude, ha. They always charge two cents for the case, ha. Worth it. I hear what Phil is saying, plus I think they figure they can usually sell you a new case and reduce inventory, if you really want one. I think they should take the tack that a good traded in case enhances value on a used instrument, even if they allot a little more to your trade in, but I guess they are operating off more of the negative experiences the GC often encounters, as described by Phil. They definitely lost their charm in a lot of ways when acquired by Bain Capital. I think they may have been sold again since that. They may be sold again from recent news.

      Not true. Only new gear that has a mated case or bag. When you enter a new item on a sales ticket that has a mate or component the computer will add the correct mated skue. This does not apply to vintage and used gear. It does not work the same. It should, but it DOESN'T, and they don't care enough to change that.

      At my GC I've found that they mark the used gear tag if it comes with a case and they usually find it pretty quickly. I've also just assumed they don't ding you on trade in if you don't have a case so they upsell one to the next buyer. Unless it's a high end guitar then I'd think they'd want the original case with it.

  • @petertiffany8096

    My experience selling on reverb is that you get no bump in price selling with a case. I suppose if you had some vintage item with the vintage case then there might be a price difference. But I don't think you get any more money for having the case in general. It probably makes the item more attractive to the buyer, but that doesn't mean more dollars.

    GC employee here, you're partially right in the aspect that cases are often misplaced or lost during the storage of them, yes. However, when we buy in used gear where the customer wishes to surrender (thats our term for it) the case to us, we technically have to buy in the case for $0.01, so we can associate a separate sku for the case, that is matched with the serial number of the guitar. When someone comes in and buys a used guitar in-store, our point of sale system automatically scans in the sku for the case that is matched with the guitar when the guitar is scanned at point of sale, and the transaction cannot complete until that matched sku tag is scanned and paired. We don't 'forget' to give you the case because if the buy in was done appropriately and done right, we physically cannot forget to give you the associated case, because the transaction will not complete until the case sku is scanned in at the time of purchase.
    I cannot speak for every GC and every employee, but our process and applications are very archaic and potentially employees steer clear of buying in the case to avoid having the deal with the headache of matching, and storing the case in an appropriate spot where its easily accessed when the guitar sells.

    We took em, but always told customers to just keep ‘em because we weren’t paying them for it. Reason was the warehouse was so overstocked with cases - both from used guitars (with paired cases) *and* new guitars that came with them, but the salesman sold the guitar and forgot to give the case to the customer. Result was a billion cases back there, and they were all “popped” at 1 cent (reason being so that selling a $999.98 guitar with its OHSC came out to the correct $999.99)
    This was over a decade ago so idk if that’s still the reason

    @Phil. Your info is out dated about GC cases, kind of. When Customers ask if they get more $ money for having a case. The answer is normally NO, because GC doesn't consider the original, or after market case as having any extra value unless the instrument originally came with a case or it is a vintage instrument. They can sell cases new, and in the ancient past having an original case was always considered just part of the value of the guitar. Just like when customers expect a new guitar to have an original case. When GC has to inventory used cases they have to build them into the inventory as a separate item from the guitar. In the past the cases were built into inventory for 0.01$ because you had to assign a dollar amount to it when putting it into the data base.
    So when a customer asks if they get more money because they have the case. The answer is No, so in turn many customers decide to keep the case. Now in present day GC. You have a lot of employees that do not care because it takes more time and work for them to build cases into inventory. They are already over worked, under paid, and have many managers harassing them about their hourly sales goal. So any extra time spent on bringing in gear that dose not have a value is wasted time, and energy.
    This is can actually be great for the customer selling gear. Used and vintage cases do have a value and are sold all the time for a lot of money. Can you blame them? They get no extra money from GC but can sell them on their own and sometimes get a lot of money.
    This comes down to another extreme fail on the part of GC management. If they actually hired, paid, trained, and retained a knowledgeable staff they could manage a used/vintage case inventory and it could be profitable. Yes I am an expert at GC.

    What’s funny I bought a fender mx Strat in 2016 with a case for $300. It was one that someone bought and never learned. Sat in the case. I sold it for $350 and kept the $100 hard shell case. So I had that experience with a used guitar I bought from guitar center.

    Yeah guitar center doesn't really buy your case. They knock the price down that they quoted you by $0.01, then pay you a penny for the case. They would have about 20 cases every few months for employees to take when the guitar got sold without the case. The ones we didn't want would get clearanced out. They don't give out free cases anymore though. Follow Phil's advice, ask if the used guitar has a case. You can also check the back of the tag on used gear and it should say "T: XX" or the sale tag will say "Case included" or "Gig bag included" underneath the price if it comes with a case.

    EMG,s are cheaper. You get al the electronics except the switch. If you get the switch that fits your guitar its still cheaper in the long run. you can switch them out of almost any guitar without modifications. Fishman's are complicated too set up. You will probably need someone to do it for you. If you want to put them in a different guitar you will have to do some soldering and other complications may arise.
    I would buy guitars that already have the fishmans in them. Otherwise I would get one of the many EMG options. P.S, Leaving it plugged in on accident drains my fishans overnight. EMG,s are dont loose their juice that fast.

      I'd wanted a guitar with EMGs for ages for specific reasons but always shyed away as there was always something I didn't like about the sound, hard to describe, but kind of too clinical.
      Late last year I came across an ESP Eclipse with the new 57/66 tw pickups and was blown away, I got it on the spot. Has all the aggression of the other EMG varieties but a warmer more organic sound. The 'split' function offers incredible single-coil sounds.
      In the end I could justify the price because of how versatile those pickups are. Plus the Japanese made ESP is literally the best made guitar I've ever had in my hands, far-out.

    I bought a new Vintera Fender 50’s Telecaster with the 7.25 fretboard radius and the vintage tall frets and I especially love the U neck. One thing about reviews on many guitars I hear on brands other than Fender usually the neck profile is not mentioned, I bought an Epiphone LesPaul Special II and the neck is so thin that it cuts off the circulation of the nerves in my hand. I broke my shoulder 18 months ago and it will likely end up being a slide only. Is there a standard for profiling the back of the neck? The fretboard radius is pretty standard, Gibson type 12 in S and T type generally are 9.5 or 7.25, now 12 in , but it seems like you can get a Stew Mac tool that measures the neck rounding, like the neck profile?

May I ask you to do a video on the best "wireless" over the ear headphones that don't need a computer or Bluetooth phone. I seek to just plug in an adapter to headset jack on amp and play. I could only find Waza headset that simply had an adapter to plug in amp, but the price point is about $400.00. I am just a home hobbyist and do not wish to pay that much. My EART Guitar T-380, Modern Humbucker Pickups, Double Coil Split, Two Point Tremolo Bridge, stainless steel fret wires electric Guitar guitar only cost me that much. So, what do you think? Wolfgang MusicMan was my favorite, but I always love wood that moves. I hate the new ones. No tone choices. I love switches and electronics. I don't do one tone pickups, even single-coils can have treble bleed circuits, piezoelectric's and other combinations. I had a 1 pickup Charvel that I didn't want and this person was having money problems. A year later he bought it back. I did like it's cherry sunburst and learn to work my pedals harder and I learn slowly to like it. I still sold it back to him and I never wanted a single split-coil humbucker again. A Seymour Duncan too! I still have a picture of it somewhere?

    Guitar Center in Roseville, Michigan , in the 90's would NOT include a NEW Gibson Les Paul case even though the guitar shipped in a Les Paul case, and the Gibson price INCLUDED a Les Paul case. They wanted $150 for the case it shipped in on TOP of the Gibson price. I bought a Gem from them in the 90's and even the manager would not ok the included case . I never had that Problem with Les Pauls at Elderly in Lansing, Mi., or Huber and Breese in Roseville, Mich.

    Wifi and Bluetooth chipsets are so cheap that manufacturers are including them in *everything* and it's reaching meme proportions.

    Just listening to this. I dug your software rant in reaction to the Hyperswitch. I'm right there with you! I'm a software engineer by day, and have been for decades. My girlfriend is a software engineer, too. It's not uncommon for either of us to sometimes jokingly and sometimes not go, "&^*$# software engineers!" when encountering buggy software or just bad design. Having said that, I'm at least intrigued by the Hyperswitch. If there was a way to replace a pot with some kind of stacked pot that included a push-pull rotary switch (or something, not sure) enabling coaxing all the Hyperswitch options, I'd find that much more interesting.

    Wish I could say I've had good experiences with Sam Ash. Sold me a Les Paul with a broken truss rod in 2020. They said they'd repair for free. After 4 or 5 months they said they didn't know how to fix but would pay for me to get it fixed elsewhere. When I picked up the guitar they had cut the fret board in half and butchered the neck. Then around x-mas they sent me a $30 e gift card, placed an order but they canceled it without notifying me and then the gift card expired. Called 4 different times to see if I could have the gift card back since it expired and every time the person said they'd look into and fix the problem. Finally gave up and will never use them again unless I have to. Just horrible customer service.

    For Antique Rocker and Phil's point about the artist not going away? While this isn't guitar specific: In 1991 when Oliver Stone made his movie about the Doors the band was still selling 250,000 'albums' a year.
    Now they sell 1,000,000.
    And Rickenbacker's are AMAZING guitars. I gigged with a 330/12 for almost a year playing music people don't play on 12-strings. Still one the best if not the bast guitar I have ever played. People buying Rics know this.
