  • If you're new to this channel, Penang was the reason we fell in love with Malaysia. We travelled to Penang in 2012 for a visa run from Thailand. We had the intention of staying for a few days, which turned to 7 weeks. It was love at first sight when it came to Penang. We were excited to come back to visit this memoral city again after over a decade.
We stayed in Georgetown, which is a UNESCO Heritage site. The location was great, and our airbnb was an old row house tastefully renovated and decorated. We explored the places we remembered.
The changes were apparent, as new buildings have sprung up. There was more traffic, and definitely more cafes and restaurant. However, some parts looked a bit touristy where the street was lined with bars. However, Penang still retained its charm with it's historic buildings, many nice renovated and some unfortunately still in disrepair.
We had some mishaps with street food, and we really wished we did more research when it came to food in Penang. We didn't get to visit Batu Ferringhi as we saw and heard how terrible the traffic can get. Maybe next time.
There are several ways to get to Penang. Initially we were going to go by train, which would take 3 hours. A quicker way was a 1 hour flight, however the flights are notorious for delays.
We of course ate at Penang Road Famous Laksa, had char kway teow, and cendol. We went in several cafes to hide from the sun, a must visit because of its plants is Emily Darling. Penang has michelin star restaurants, which we recommend booking way in advance.
There are still many street art all over the city, so wait when it's cooler. Explore the city and wander through the colorful streets

@@Married2Travel Exactly. Probably need to do a bit of planning to save time also. Just a bit of planning, nothing too rigid.Once you're familiar with how things work in a particular place then you can just go on impulse.
