San Diego, CA - On Saturday, March 16, 2024, at approximately 2:43 a.m.,
California Highway Patrol (CHP) San Diego Area units were dispatched to a call of a
Crash on Interstate 15 (I-15) northbound near Miramar Way.
Based on preliminary investigation, a Honda Civic driven by 25-year-old Esteban
Coronado from Escondido was driving on I-15 northbound, north of Miramar Way
when the Honda struck the rear of a Toyota 4-Runner driven by a male from San
Diego. The Honda became disabled within the traffic lanes when it was struck by a
Chevrolet Colorado, driven by 22-year-old Joseph Michael Martin from Sun City.
Two passengers from the Honda sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced
deceased on scene. Esteban Coronado and Michael Martin were determined to be
under the influence of alcohol/and or drugs and were arrested and booked into San
Diego County Jail.
Northbound lanes were closed for approximately three and a half hours to facilitate
the investigation. Traffic was diverted to the I-15 northbound, High Occupancy
Vehicle lanes.

Was told by an AZ highway patrol friend. Always drive right 2 lanes after midnight. The worst accidents and intoxicated drivers are usually left and high occupancy lanes.

If your car becomes disabled on the highway or a bridge, get out of the car immediately and get off the highway. A stalled car on the highway is a target that will get struck, especially by those who experience target fixation while driving.
Turm on your hazards.
Pretty sure that's not the official recommendation. A lot of people will get hit trying to make it to the side of the road on foot. Especially if they are drunk. On a racetrack if you wreck or stall , you're supposed to stay in your car.

If your car is diabled on the freeway, unfortunately there's no safe place to be and trying to get off the freeway making you a sitting duck when cars are doing 75+, making you screwed either way.
Unbelievable.!! 2 out of the 3 drivers were DUI.!!! And because of them people died.!!! Clearly no one learns.! DUI must be made an instant jail sentence and a hefty fine and their cars should be taken away and auctioned off, proceeds give to families who’ve lost loved ones to drunk/drug intoxicated drivers.!! THIS MUST STOP.!!!
I think if a DUI kills a person, that should be an automatic life prison sentence.
I get your frustration, I have cleaned up more carnage from drunk driving than you could imagine, but there is a legal system for a reason. It is possible for someone to be not impaired and blow over if the breathalyzer is improperly used. A court case should detirmine someone's guilt not the police.

A California State tow truck driver once told me to NEVER stop on a bridge. He said if you stop on a bridge someone will come along and they WILL crash into you. He said "I don't care if you ruin your wheel or ruin your car......if your car will move GET OFF the bridge. Saving your wheel rim isn't worth your life."
Exact same with a fender bender .....if possible, move the cars off the highway .....well clear of the lanes.

So a drunk driver in a Honda rear-ended a 4Runner, then a drunk driver in a Colorado hit the drunk driver in the Honda killing two of his buddies. Damn...sounds like both drivers are gonna pay the price for the deceased.

People will never learn
When I'm on the freeway, I can spot a cigarette butt in the lane ahead of me, even at night. How you miss a 3500lb, 4 foot tall block of steel in the lane ahead of you, impossible. Impossible!
Well it looks like it was sideways (due to first impaired collision) and therefore reflectors would not be visible.
Not impossible, it happens all the time. Dark gray car turn sideways and you will not see it until the last second because it blends in with the roadway at night.
How often do you see drivers paying zero attention to the road? All these people who make videos or stream from their car? Looking at their camera, turning towards their passengers and talking to them? Too many people treat their cars like and extension of their house, and think the windows and mirrors in their cars are just there for decoration. Distracted drivers kill people.

If this is from the video I saw earlier, it didn't look like a stalled vehicle. It looked liked two cars that were about to race. Lights on, lined up then the truck just comes into frame and smashed into the Honda. It was horrific to see. Boom. It's over.
The freeways in Southern California needs to have more lighting installed . When I left and traveled to other large cities in the USA the freeways had proper lighting.
Another issue is speed. These 20 year olds are driving way too fast , don’t have experience driving . It needs to be more difficult to obtain a license in California. We have to get drivers fully ready to drive on our dangerous roads.
California does not have the electricity to power street lights, and yet they are pushing for all electric cars and trucks.

they don't require any freeway driving to get a license. It's all if 10 minutes with the tester. About 4 blocks out and around and you are done with a license to kill. Very sad. I had to do freeway driving at least 10 miles of it and all around the city. at least 30 minutes to prove I could control my vehicle.

As someone who worked "first call" in the funeral business, always wear a seat belt and never own (or ride) in a small vehicle.
thats why sitting in the off road stall lane is so dangerous....all it takes is one vehicle to drift into the side lane to collide and kill you. Always drive or get to an off ramp to stay safe.😮
If your car stalls turn on your hazards and go stand on side of the road. The likely hood someone is going to strike you from behind going full speed is high.

As best I could tell, the 4runner wasn't in the video. I suspect the Honda was at least partly sideways after hitting the 4runner, and the pickup hit the passenger side of the Honda.

If your car stalls get the fck out and go all the way to the shoulder lane for safety, and don't remain in traffic lane. It's NOT complicated.
If your car stalls, get it OFF the roadway! The 4 Runner was at fault here. The drunks couldn't react to his stopping in the middle of the freeway.

The 4 runner was driving down the highway when it was rear ended by the Honda, disabling the Honda in lanes, which was then struck by the Chevy Colorado. The report states the 4 runner was being driven by a male from San Diego, so not stopped. The driver of the Honda is at fault as he must’ve been speeding when he rear ended the 4 runner starting the chain reaction

How are you going to remove a heavily damaged vehicle to the side of the road without getting killed?

In the states your lucky because DUI is taken seriously as opposed to the UK there out in 7years or less
DUIs aren't taken seriously here. First time offense usually gets no jail time, lose driving privileges for like 3 months max. DUI injury or fatality accident is it taken more seriously.

I'm not condoning anything. This scene was just surreal by the looks of the video. The trouble is, and I KNOW everyone loves getting on their soap box. Once someone is intoxicated, they are much less likely to make good decisions. That doesn't make anything OK. Planning ahead of time with a designated driver, etc., is excellent decision-making. Someone said down below: The penalties for drunk driving should be much more severe. I'm from Vegas, and Henry Ruggs, who hit another girl here and killed her by the Toyota catching fire and burning her alive, only received a 3-year sentence! There's something very wrong there. The young people involved in this incident on I-15 will be haunted by this for a very long time, or at least I think they will.
Yeah that's the key, advanced planning if you know you're going to drink later. SOOO many people once they start drinking INSIST on driving home they want to be comfy in their own bed even if there's an option to crash on a buddies sofa or take a cab home.
Within a stupid society, you even have to drive to get your booze. You HAVE to arrive by car to bars, restaurants, clubs, and liquor stores. Building life around cars has predictable consequences. There is a better way, but Americans are too absorbed in car culture to even consider it.

the most dangerous time to be driving is late at night/early morning, when all the bars close.... The majority of the cars parked at any bar parking lot, anywhere, pick any state, any city, any town.... will be driven home by people who had been drinking at the bar that night... the small minority of those cars were decent responsible drinkers who brought with them a designated driver, but they're a minority. So when the bars close at night, beware...
