- After six years at Liverpool, Patrik decided to swap the north with the south and join newly promoted Portsmouth, managed by Harry Redknapp. Patrik was the first of many new faces to arrive at Fratton Park as Pompey headed into their debut season in the Premier League.
"It was a great time to arrive at the club. New team, new chapter for the club and the Portsmouth fans deserved to be in the Premier League after years of great support. That first season was fantastic, we played some great football. the fans were brilliant and the feel around the place was always positive. Portsmouth was a good time in my career"

When I first started supporting Pompey in the early 90s I never thought we would one day see a player of Patrik Berger's calibre at Fratton Park. What a player. That Charlton goal lives long in the memory.
Great memories of them days! Shaka in goal, de Zeeuw and Linvoy, Super Matty Taylor, Gary O'Neil, Patrick Berger, Sherwood, Sheringham and the YAK to name a few. What a team that was.
That goal against Charlton is better than the Henry one in every way, besides quality of opposition. Takes it on the move, close control over the shoulder James Rodriguez-style. Loops it up and over, unsavable. Genius.
You could say then, that Rodriguez does it "Berger Style" 😉 Only joking, thank you for the comment and im glad you enjoyed the goal!

I actually had a Berger #23 home shirt back then! I went to a few of those games - I had to pinch myself when we beat Liverpool that early in our first season in the Premier League.

legend, my favourite player when I was a kid, I remember I couldn't believe it when we signed him. had his name on the back of both my home and away shirt I had that first season. remember both goals against Tottenham clearly as I was on the 18 yard line sitting in the north stand. was great watching this video 👍

As a Liverpool fan, couldn't help but mention that goal against us-ouch! Any backstory on why you celebrated so wildly against the Reds? 😅
I remember him getting a couple of direct free kicks in to the Milton End against Villa on a particularly windy day. My memory is that they were from about 40 yards out - my dad said "what's he shooting for? you don't score from there", before the first one, and in it went. Shame there's no footage of them (it wasn't a televised game).
Are you sure you're not talking about the two against Spurs in this video? Because it sounds like it's both of those goals you are takin about mate. 02:12
Berger picked up an injury watching this video but should be fit in a couple of weeks. We'll see him in about three months.
