The story is different. The fire in the Ensenada plant in Mexico was in '94. These US Squiers originate from the hault of production in the japanese plant due to problems with prolongation of the contracts of the builders over there. Since Fender had already started selling and promoting Squier strats they needed to keep delivery up and so simply made them in the US factory for a while (starting late '89 until '90).

I have an early Squire Mexico strat, and I was told by the artist rep at the Fender office in Scottsdale (where I got it from) that the early ones were manufactured in Corona California, and assembled in Mexico. It feels and plays like an American strat to me, and sounds like one too. The wood is high quality. I’m pretty sure the body is Alder based on how heavy it is, and the neck maple and rosewood are of high quality and nice. The only difference is the frets are not jumbo, but a little smaller.

My wife just found one of these on the curb during her morning run....it has no pickups or pick guard but that’s gonna change!

I very recently bought one from CME and it has certainly got its own vibe. I love playing it!!! I probably have the best looking one out there. The condition of it is superb.

Got a red one I bought back in 89'or 90. The serial number is visible only if the neck is removed so I'm told. I'm not brave enough to remove the neck to see so that's it. Plays really nice. I also have a mim Fender strat with the noiseless pups. Like both guitars 🎸

As I understand it your information on the fire is wrong. It was later in 95 or 96.

I have one too! Just bought it a couple of weeks ago and sounds awesome! ;)
Nevertheless, the "true" story is in this blog:

The fire in the Mexico factory has nothing to do with it... ;)
