TATP is well known for being one of the few explosives that is not based on a nitrogen molecule which most bomb detectors used to rely on for detection. The majority of other explosives utilize Nitric acid somewhere in the synthesis which you painfully left out of the list of common acids. Unlikely the cold pack are used to provide a source of nitric acid in-situ, but more often than not used as secondary bolstering explosive. The cold packs you mentioned (H4N2O3) are also much more likely to be encountered in shake & bake methamphetamine lab than a HME lab. So in that setting you would also possible see Sulfuric/Hydrocholric acid, Sodium/Potassium hydroxide, Lithium batteries, Non-polar solvents, and lots of pharmaceutical packaging. This doesn't mean it's any safer (It's not) than a HME lab, and should be properly tagged/logged/disposed of by trained individuals.

Yea also if you see someone filling their shopping cart with any mix of those items, report them especially if they are buying a lot at once. A key thing he forgot to mention is that buying a lot of solvents like methanol (yellow heet bottles), acetone (paint thinner), toluene (lacquer thinner), etc. is also a sign that someone is up to no good because most energetic chemicals are recrystallized to make them purer. Buying a lot of bleach (hydrogen peroxide or sodium hypochlorite) is also suspicious since you can make some powerful energetics with that too. Some are extremely easy to make but many aren't. Typically the ones that are the easiest to make are the most sensitive and dangerous ones too. Andrew V unfortunately you don’t need TATP or RDX to do a lot of damage. Smokeless powder inside a pressure cooker surrounded in ball bearing will deal a great amount of damage. Look at the Boston marathon bombing. But yes it’s very fortunate that 99% terrorist and other criminals don’t know how to make such explosives

With a low explosive like gunpowder it will create a rupture or large shards at best since it only deflagrates but with a high explosive that detonates it creates much more pressure that creates sooo much more fragmentation at a lot higher speeds. Those steel bbs would be sent flying at much higher velocity and cause quite a bit more damage but yes you are entirely correct. Such a device can sadly prove very deadly. Thankfully most people don't have the knowledge, experience, or resources to make something a lot deadlier. It's tragic that people do these kinds of things though. I saw some aftermath pictures of that attack and one was where one of the runners was holding his own leg. His whole life and career is over thanks to that. It's just sad. Not to forget all of the people who were killed. That in itself is already extremely tragic and I find it sad that humans will do that to each other.
