Given Wizard's level of expertise it's not a disservice to get the 308 working from aftermarket/inauthentic parts. He's kept the project affordable so that the car can be used in the real world. Trying to OEM restore a car like that would've taken not just a lot of money but also extra time away from being able to actually enjoy driving the thing.

    • @caseyroberts1171
      @caseyroberts1171 2 года назад +24

There's an argument to be made that if you're trying to keep an older car concourse quality, buy the factory part. This car, however, is not only a model so common that their values will never equal the true classics of their era, but it's long left the condition of being worth the time, money, and attention to keep it concourse-quality. If anything, the choices Wizard has made has salvaged a car that would've been destroyed as a car not worth the effort, and kept another fun to drive car on the streets. Sometimes a restoration requires a concourse level of detail, and sometimes a restoration requires a swap of parts to make it serviceable and drivable.
      Great job, Wizard!

I think replacing the alternator with a stronger, cheaper, more effective unit is a perfectly acceptable move. I sincerely doubt a non-OEM alternator really takes much of anything away from the overall Ferrari

In the Porsche 928 world, it was discovered that with the addition of a few washers, the alternator from an '88 Chevy Camaro V6 could be installed and worked beautifully at far less cost, so this sort of thing is not unusual.

@@MiGujack3 Mostly true. Some vehicles come with mounting lugs that are just not compatible with all alternators or compressors without major modification. Most of the time it doesn't usually take that much work to get one to fit, a little grinding or some washers will make it work. On the 928 the Bosch/Chevy alternator basically bolts right in, it just requires a few washers to get a tight fit.
As to AC compressors....That is some deep voodoo that I wouldn't personally mess with~

The way I see it, if Ferrari couldn't get it right from the factory to make the car actually work, as a car...then by all means upgrade and modify as needed to make the car WORK. And doing so on a budget makes it even better. Because in this case, the car now has an owner that respects it and loves it. It isn't a fashion statement sitting in a garage now collecting dust and rotting away. I love seeing old beasts that didn't get the respect they deserved even from their own creators, being made right.

Hey Wizard! When doing the turn signal stalk repair make sure to use a plastic repair solvent and not glue. I've seen a lot of talented people make that mistake. If done correctly and after a proper curing period, the repair can be sanded and polished to be invisible. Also, it should never discolor or separate and should be stronger than the surrounding material. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

    Wizard,
For the exhaust you really should do it before you get it tuned. If it was my car I would build a custom set of headers & exhaust. I would delete the catalytic converters put the largest flow through muffler that would fit. That should give you the best flow while keeping the sound to a reasonable level and making it sound incredible. If you are decent with a TIG welder and buy a couple boxes of bends it is fairly easy to make your own headers. If you doubt your ability to design it, a set of exhaust modeling blocks are a great tool to have.

  • @6rimR3ap3r

Exhaust wise I would look at ANSA. These are period Italian tuner/OEM exhaust systems and at least a quick google Search found a 308 kit. But I'd double check if that's legit or a fake branding.

    The alternator thing is crazy.
Especially the stock one being so borderline in a performance car.
And this is pretty common from manufacturers to play really close to the minimum needed alternator power and that plays hell with every other electrical system in the car.
You putting twice the alternator power in this Ferrari will likely put alot more reliability in the car.

That's a Delco 10 SI. Used but not made by GM. They are solid units, IIRC they produce high output at low rpms but also can run continuously at very high rpm. $80 is a steal!

Hey David. I know the 308/328 aren't the best Ferraris ever made...by a longshot. And they certainly aren't the most fun or comfortable to drive. But in my eyes, they are the most beautiful...even more than the over-the-top multi-million dollar GTOs and Daytonas. Yours turned out absolutely scrumptious!

When I lived in southwestern Pennsylvania, I took my car to an automotive electrical specialist. He rebuilt my alternator and actually boosted the amp rating with appropriate replacement electronic parts. GM cars were notorious in the 80s for having underpowered alternators. DeLorean used GM engines and alternators and had serious issues with power draw and had to recall all their first-year models to install a heavy duty alternator; Johnny Carson had one of the first DeLoreans and was embarrassed when he showed it off at a party but couldn’t start it because the alternator wasn’t sufficiently recharging the battery.

Good to see the Ferrari 308 running and the use of parts from other cars and a fraction of the price of the Ferrari price and l am glad you are going to repair the front spoiler but apart from that the Ferrari 308 is looking good especially how bad it was when you first got it

As for the air cleaner, you could get the standard cleaner element and make a housing for it. Only a bit of bent tin!

I’ve always liked the car and agreed totally with the work you’ve put into it. Offering to let danielson drive it, yeah, that’s how you keep good help. Dig your channel, and for sure I don’t need your help, or anyone else’s on my old chevy’s that I have, if I did happen across a Ferrari that I could afford, I definitely know who I would want to help keep in tip top condition 👍

So happy to see this project coming to fruition! I kick myself for not jumping on these when they were affordable. Although hearing those parts prices make me feel better! I went with a Porsche 928 which is a fantastic car but will never be a Ferrari! 🇮🇹

I hope you get to make a video about the current Alfa Romeo Giulia (Non Quadrifolglio). My Lady has one. Has its problems, but it is extremely underrated as a drivers car. The steering is incredible, and the ZF transmission shifts gears very aggressive and smooth at the perfect RPM. The single overhead cam GME T4 engine, different from the Jeep Wrangler version that is double overhead cam and an open deck block, is a very fun engine and has not given problems at all, and gives a pleasant 4 cylinder noise not like that of most others.

I believe the direction you are taking this old 308 is sensible.
And yes, when converting to FI, more alternator amps is desired and why pay more for a lower output alternator buried in the engine compartment.
As to mufflers and knowing a bit about exhaust tuning, how this car sounds is a pretty big deal. Would be no straight pipes for me but I don't like real loud exhausts on motorcycles or performance cars. I do like a bit of sound however.
What I would do in your shoes, is do a deep dive on Ferrari 308 internet forums and find out what conventional wisdom is for the best sounding low cost exhaust. I wouldn't just 'wing it'. I would listen to the chorus of owners who have been there and decided upon a more unified opinion of what sounds 'appropriate' as homage to what Ferrari engineers intended. Exhaust harmonics are complex. Let others guide you would be my input.
Love that you are preserving this old Ferrari. For auto enthusiasts, the 308 is a throwback to a more sensible time when manufacturers didn't sell out for profit with greater complexity and therefore higher replacement cost for owners. There is a design purity to this old car from an era that will never return. Well done.
