This guy has been a musician’s musician for his whole life. Had the pleasure of knowing him in the Clover days and his devotion to his craft has always been there. I remember sitting on a beach with John and the other guys in Clover and while everyone else was enjoying the sun, John was playing his guitar. Always improving. He’s the real deal. Rock on, John!
This guy man... This guy is such a classy dude. And I haven’t even gotten into his talent yet. John has the most subtle & refined voice [ wether using guitar ; banjo ; violin ; slide ; ... ] Classy dude. Gold standard.
I was on holiday from the UK in Philadelphia USA in August 1982 and I went to see the Doobie Brothers at the Spectrum concert hall. The one thing that sticks with me so clearly since then is John McFee playing a Flying V and turned up mega loud for the intro solo in China Grove. John playing the solos and fills through that song live absolutely blew my mind. It’s one of my favourite guitar sound memories. Thank you John, you are so very much appreciated. Best wishes from Northern Ireland. 🌠🌅🕊🌌
John played on Meet Glen Campbell (Good Riddance Time of your Life). Just the best musicians were playing there! Nothing but respect for John and the Doobies, top notch musicianship, singing , songs, you name it . Thanks for this interview!
The absolute best insite to the real creative world of music. Regardless of the genre. He speaks absolute truth regarding lyrics, musicianship and the hard work of developing the gift of music. Johns a timeless pro. A true American treasure
"This video is Classic. Summing up the whole perspective on what is going on within *The Brotherhood of Musicians* unlike no other. Outstanding !!" Fantastic 👈🏾
John is right! I started playing drums at 7. I wanted to be Phil Collins. I think learning an instrument can build character in someone. If they stay with it and are passionate about it, it can be a lifelong learning experience.
I remember being one of those "Death to Disco" guys in the 70's, and I didn't find Punk (Ramones, Sex Pistols) to be very interesting musically. Outside of Steely Dan, Little Feat, Stevie Wonder, Allmans and a few others I thought the 70's were a little thin. Then in 1977 came Elvis Costello's debut album "My Aim is True", and I thought here's a guy who can not only write well but also plays an incredible electric guitar. Fast forward to around 2010 and I find out it wasn't Elvis playing that incredible guitar but rather John Mcfee. Allison ,Sneaky Feelings, Payback a Payback, etc.. Every song, nothing short of a guitar playing masterpiece. I still love ya Elvis, but you did drop down a notch in 2010, and John Mcfee went up 10. Love that album.
A huge contributor to the problem is that radio is dead. Music is programmed. Broadcast stations are run without DJs. For that reason, how can new music be brought to the listening public? It can’t. Men in suits are only out to make a buck - nothing else.
Totally agree with John. The punk era happening here in the UK completely baffled me, in that the musical content took second place to the "anti-establishment" movement behind it at the time. Initially, the bands purposely chose crap gear and outrageous fashion styles to enforce this anti attitude. It was a bit like "Anti Rockstar", but happy enough to take the money ;-).
Play for the love of music and artistic expression rather than what sells. It's that simple. Stop using technology to turn a tree stump into an, "artist".

a true gentleman and brilliant musician. best wishes John from NZ
John McFee is an integral part of the Doobie Brothers without whom most of their songs wouldnt sound the same.
