When I used to drive over the road for a local trucking company here in Downeast Maine, I made many runs through I90 out to Chicago and stayed at that Ambest truckstop on several occasions. Even back the, NY DOT used to com in that truckstop in teams and bushwhack drivers while they were in their bunks. Around the time they passed the no idling law, someone from the truckstop would come running out and start banging on truck doors to warn drivers when they had word the DOT teams were in their way in.

My brother went through that with his children, 20 years my senior and one day I got home to find that his salary had been garnished and left him with $40 for a month. We shared a house, had is eldest son his daughter and the mother only had the youngest son but still claimed and they paid her. I at age 22 paid the family expenses until I got his money back, it sucked.

NYSP here. My father was a trucker who sacrificed a lot of time away to provide us a nice life. I never have or ever will give a truck driver a difficult time when I have to come into contact with any. They will always get the benefit of the doubt. No matter what type of store we walk into when we see product on the shelf we have truck drivers to thank for that by doing their jobs 24/7 in all kinds of weather. Much respect to all the truck drivers out there and please be safe.

Before automated tolls our company (in northern NY) got a photo bill in the mail for tolls in NYC. We argued the bill and it ended up being a PA license plate.
There is a closed comfort station north of Syracuse on 81 (southbound) that is only used for DOT inspections.
The comfort station up by us on 81 the State Police uses the comfort station for DOT inspections. They have a warning light near an exit for them to pullover. Most trucks exit the interstate and drive other routes to avoid the DOT.
As you come north on 81 from PA there is a pullover specifically built for DOT intersections entering the state.
    Good luck on your family.
Back in the late 90's I did Amtrak from Syracuse to Washington DC, it took an 8 hour day. I thoroughly enjoyed the view from Syracuse to just outside NYC.

Steve growing up in Brooklyn some of my friends grandfathers & dads worked at the Brooklyn Navy yard building ships. They told us that most of parts for ships where barged into the “yard”. They had a pier hanger with overhead cranes to remove equipment off barges & onto yard rail cars. These train cars would bring the equipment to pier cranes & than put onto ship. Not so Fun Fact one of my friends grandfathers told us he was visited & questioned by Navel intelligence multiple times because one day he bought a camera to work & took pictures of them working, they thought he mite be a spy, He & the other guys on block who worked together would laugh every time they told us the story

🤔 The child support story sounds very familiar... I physically have custody of my daughter and I'm still paying... They will not enforce a summons for her to come into court. So as long as she doesn't show up I keep paying. The only relief I got was they gave me a credit for 7 months But they don't enforce collection of it You have to sue to get it back. Or just stop paying until the credit is exhausted but since it's automatically deducted from my pay and I work for the state that is nearly impossible 😂 All I can do is laugh. The bright side is I get to enjoy life with my daughter without her nonsense that Is priceless in itself 😎

Even on I 4 through Orlando no issues, once I eas pulled In because the officer wanted to know what color my W 900 Aerodyne was, lol. Anyway we use to go around the scales, now there's cameras all over the exits watching if ya were going g around the scales. Also FHP has commercial vehicle enforcement, instead of DOT. Sorry for being long winded Steve. Love your videos stay safe keep up the great job. Love Orwell too.

Fun fact, battleships don't have spare barrels. When they needed to be relined, that ship was out of service. The only reason the Iowa's had spares is because there were 6 total ships ordered. Only 4 were built. When building battleships, the cannons were ordered first since they took the longest to build. So since 6 were ordered, they had 54 barrels forged, but only used 36. Thats how the Iowa's had 18 spare barrels.

Watervliet Arsenal is an Army-owned and operated manufacturing facility located in Watervliet, New York. The arsenal is the oldest, continuously active arsenal in the United States having begun operations during the War of 1812.
NY State DOT use to have the authority but the NYSP took it over a few years back.

The 16” guns for the Iowa class battleships were made at the Washington Navy Yard. Because the WNY no longer had the capability to manufacture 16” barrels when the four Iowa class ships were put back in to service in the 1980s, US Army Watervliet Arsenal in New York would have been responsible for doing the work if the barrels needed to be refurbished.

Hey Steve, where that trooper was sitting use to be a great sit down restaurant back in the 70's and early 80's. Next to that where the mobil station is use to be a fuel stop called GEORGE PORT. had a great truck wash there, all hand washed. Where theLOVES is was nothing more than a huge dirt lot where guys hauling doubles could drive in and get a meal or a nap. Spent many a night there myself. Ride on, and be safe. Great videos....

    @JrFlexing909 9 месяцев назад +2

IF you had one of those specialized trailers that stretched for the double drop trailer you can do a lot with it but that is something in the future if you decide to go for that being that you will have another tractor on the way if you get to it with a 3 axle drive set up but that is future.
As for the NY state, They might have weight station but that depends what they are placed. But so far as driving in NYC, Upstate and LI they have lot of rest area that Dot set up and do inspection at. Steve you been thru NY from the Verrazano Br, White Stone Br, LIE, They have rest area that they can just turn on the flashing lights on the sign. Waala you have inspection area in rest stop where truck driver sleep. Or that pick a truck that seem to be over load they pull them in to a safe location and have mobile scales. They been doing that in NY and NJ for the dump trucks.
To end the video with a war to get the trailer on top another trailer. This is going to be good. Be Safe Steve as well keep the family in good hands.

Upstate NY and the Capital District are my old stomping ground. Are you talking about the Watervliet Arsenal? A couple of my uncles worked there up into the 1990's if I remember correct. You are 100% correct about the state, not much going on there except the beautiful scenery. Just wait until they find a way to tax that.

What I used the trailer brake for allot, was to check that some idiot mite pull your fifth wheel pin while you were in the truck stop for something to eat, as a (dangerous) prank. With 48 years of driving truck, you learn allot of different things over the years. Thankfully it never happened to me, but it happened to a friend of mine, and thankfully it happened before he got on the road........[MainTrack/Canada).........

You’re right about DOT. Unless you get the guy that had to sleep on the couch last night, they are generally just keeping us safe.
I know the two lane roads to get around them.
As for rest areas, Idaho is good. They do set up in them if there’s not a weight station in the area. I’ve woken up and seen them set up. I always drove up to them and without exception, they told me that because I was there before they showed up, I could leave. Because they are a safety area, they don’t interrupt the rest and don’t want drivers to be afraid to park there.

Darn, was hoping you'd tape your visit to Pittsfield, MA. I spent a couple of years there working for GE in the late 70s. Would like to have seen how much things changed. Travelled from there to Chicago, and now VT, on 90 too many times to count. Hey, you're a jack of all trades. Nice job on the stairs. I wish we were neighbors, we could share tools.

I can make you more upset about NYDOT, recently I went to work for a carrier, after I lost my old truck (to buy a new truck) when I got the truck they boasted about, and left to haul its first load, I quickly realized the truck was not as they advertised. Because the contract stated they are selling me the truck as DOT compliant, I had it inspected, and the mechanic gave me a list of violations. When I contacted the company, they said they would not pay for repairs because I took the truck, but it had not even been a day at that point. I took the first load to the house to get my equipment, and when I got there, they got worse (long story, going to skip all that) but because of that, I called NYDOT to ask they inspect the truck before I drive it again (to get it put out of service and force the carrier to fix it). The NYDOT said they would only inspect the truck if I brought it to them, and even though I live less than 15 mins from their local office, they would not inspect the truck without it being driven. Long story short, since they refused to consider safety first, I refused to drive the truck and forced the carrier to tow it away, at their own cost. NYDOT because of what they showed me, will not get any cooperation from me when it comes to inspections any more.

NYS has no permanent weigh stations. All weigh stations are portable. They can set them up ANYWHERE. You know the NY DOT is weighing if there are full size vans present. They are either dark blue or black, and are mostly unmarked. They have the rest areas set up with electronic signage for days they are in there. There are some rest areas that they are there almost every day.
Mostly they just run you through. They like to pick on the smaller trucks, dump trucks, and overloaded pickups with trailers. Those pickup truck guys are usually hauling machines that are too heavy for a NON-CDL driver, and for the equipment.

I guess some people will always find something to cry about.. no one can ever be perfect or accommodate enough.. I know I'd rather have a inspection in the rest area opposed to during my drive time which will cost me money.. doing it in a rest area when you're already forced to be stopped is my best case scenario.. but idk I guess that's just me.. know if you were sleeping and they were banging on doors that's another story.. but yet at the same time if you truly have something wrong with your truck then they can contact you at any time on any property.. not to mention many steering wheel holders can't do a proper precheck or have any idea what they're even looking at or supposed to check for because they pay someone else to usually do it.. yea inspections suck but when you lose someone close to you because of a safety issue that was not fixed then you will understand more.. safe travels all and remember turn your headlights on and open that door.. here comes Peter and Richard with their 2x4.. hammer down..

NYS troopers are pretty cool, I had one push me home after I lost the clutch in my car last month. He even pointed to his bodycam and said, "So, you're right over that hill there, right?" as I said yes sir!. Even though it was near 10 miles, lol. And he made mention that leaving my car there would be a safety hazard. So, thanks to the fella from the Fonda barracks for that. If I'm doing something wrong, I can see why a cop does their job. I don't believe they just live to pick on us though. I've been let go on some large fines in my Pete because they too are human.

I have been through the same situation and it’s ironic how I randomly go off about my experiences with the totally constitutional and equal application of the law of the system in the Great American Empire.
I been through the exact same thing and I manage and I am lucky my son’s mother is a great mother.
However her and her attorney literally tried to destroy me and I’m glad that chapter is over and my son and I are close.
I felt bad for you hearing about what you went through and with guys like us the system is very efficient when it comes to getting what you “owe” them.
I don’t drive trucks but my job is the kind that takes up a lot of time and before I would have to work nights so they use that against you. My stepdad was a trucker so I actually can drive a ten speed nothing like the sound of a big diesel running down the road.
    Stay safe out there.
