    After years of searching, it's finally time to take a look at what could've been with Free Radical's Star Wars: Battlefront 3. The results... aren't quite what you'd expect.

    What blows my mind is that an experience like this could have been offered on a console released in 2005. Imagine what we could do today, I am shocked someone has not tried to make something like this in unreal engine

    • @UnabridgedGamer
      @UnabridgedGamer  Год назад +3

      They have, actually - it was called Galaxy in Turmoil. However, mismanagement led to a whole mess of things. Meanwhile, the BF3 Legacy team are tinkering with trying to at least release a few maps for OG Xbox (which supports mods) as a proof of concept.
      The problem at the end of the day remains achieving that scale with polish and fun resulting in the process. Especially right now, smaller scale multiplayer and uber scale are the breadwinners lately. It'll be a few years till folks start wanting Battlefront's mid-scale encounters again to the extent they were in 2008, I imagine.

    Good video, even a mention of the infighting community that surrounds it, and you actually looked at it without the rose tinted glasses of most yters, Bombastic never shuts up about how great it was supposed to be

      It makes sense why the series stayed on the ground. Ground to space turned out to be a huge headache that killed this project and like a tumor. TFU2s pickled Starkillers taught us the hard way that reality would catch up eventually. Star Wars has always been a business, and like any business, going even with average or mediocre products isn’t sustainable. I’m sure if the community needs a reminder, TFU2 is always there to help them understand.

    Damn, it's quite sad how this game turned out. The main feature of ground to air would have been cool but I guess it didn't add much. I honestly would like to see this feature on the new hardware, I think they can make something of it

    • @UnabridgedGamer
      @UnabridgedGamer  Год назад +1

      Oh I definitely could see this sort of feature work in a modern experience. Personally, I'd take Dark Void, give every player a jetpack, and emphasize the ship to ship battle as two titans dueling in the skies, making the GROUND be the secondary battlefield rather than the primary one. Maybe you'd have to scavenge for additional resources to upgrade your capital ship or earn points for special character classes when navigating the ground territories.
      That's really the crucial crux of the issue - making the ships matter. It explains why Elite Squadron really amped up the value of taking out the ships for its final release.

    • @UnabridgedGamer
      @UnabridgedGamer  Год назад

      @@creed8712 Not to my knowledge. I know that Squad’s Galactic Contention has bombardments, but it’s still primarily ground combat focused.

    Well, that's simultaneously a stab in the heart and a big relief. My only comment would be that the game was never finished, so we have no idea what it would've looked like when everything was implemented and polished. Maybe it would've been something ambitious and mind-blowing, maybe not.

    • @UnabridgedGamer
      @UnabridgedGamer  Год назад +1

      I definitely think with polish, it would've been FUN. Mind-blowing, sadly, is a bit more unlikely. The concepts for Battlefront IV definitely had more of that kind of weight to them, with its alt-timeline campaign, but that never even made it beyond the asset creation stage, most of which would've been rolled into III as DLC when Lucas Arts canned the annual release schedule.

      @@UnabridgedGamer Ugh, what is it with this franchise and not being able to exist for more than 2 installments?? It's, like, the purest essence of Star Wars (minus a good story and characters but hey that's what KOTOR is for). Both iterations were extremely popular and successful, but every publisher manages to shit itself when it comes to number 3! At least Free Radical had the excuse of hardware limitations, but what's EA's excuse?!! WHY CAN'T THIS SERIES COUNT TO 3!!!!

  • @creed8712

    I think as sad as this is what I’m more interested in was battlefront 4 since it’s entire concept is so alien to Star Wars as a whole that it makes you wonder rather ironically “what if?”

    What were those mods you mentioned to help increase the game’s stability and performance on Xenia? In my personal experience so far, improving the game’s stability has come down to just using more powerful hardware I.E. stronger PCs than what I had used to play this previously.

    • @UnabridgedGamer
      @UnabridgedGamer  Год назад

      You can find most of them via download links on the Free Radical Archive Discord server. Just... don't talk to anyone there unless you need help setting up the mods.
      They can't all be used simultaneously, but a few work together and ensure things like proper first-person view models and better performance on certain maps. One guy there has been plugging away at getting Coruscant to look as close to the planned E3 demo as possible, but I don't think he's posted his latest work for download yet.
      There's another guy who only posts his progress updates to RUclips, sadly, who's managed to unlock the PC interface features and such. It's all very scattered and requires a bit of digging, I'm afraid.

    It's been 20 years. It's never releasing in any form. And it makes sense why. Lots of this is downgraded in spite of the new content and better graphics. You mentioned the RPG guy, and that's a perfect example. That alongside the few people who have it are holding it hostage thinking they'll get an industry job for 20 year old work they stole from other people, alongside being incredibly toxic and elitist.
    And it's a sick joke knowing the pieces are all layed out here, and so easy to make into a great next gen Star Wars game. Battlefront aside, the IP may as well be dead right now. The people who care are out there, but they've been shunned and outcast by nothing but apathy again and again.
    Now more than ever, this is our most desperate hour. Hope won't save us anymore.

    So basically, Battlefront 3 would've been another disappointing and lackluster late 2000s/early 2010s Star Wars game and it would've had a campaign, instant action and galactic conquest that would've been inferior to its predecessor.
    Even though it was a last minute addition, Battlefront 2's campaign was still fun and had unique and memorable objectives and scenarios. It even had a decent story when you think about it - seriously, check out Ciudad16's 3 part retrospective on it!

      - Did you think I wasn't imagining it without players? I've played Battlefield 2142, which did this concept better a whole console generation prior.
      - Gameplay flow doesn't equal balancing. Gameplay needs to be fun, exciting, and at least unpredictable enough to keep you on your toes.
      - That said, it's a multiplayer focused game, so yes, balancing would've actually been a major priority, especially since they were planning to release DLC.
