Penal Substitution doesn't hold water, Remittance and Release from bondage is the Gospel. Jesus freely gave himself on our behalf as a lamb without spot or blemish for a sin offering. To Remit our sins and release us from bondage to sin. Being reconciled to God through the blood of Christ we are now able to please God and know him. Our faith working through love in obedience to the truth keeps us in his Grace..... where we stand firm.
Pastoe VanDrunen, thank you for an honest view of the atonement. I prefer the view that seems to have had traction from the Scriptures and the first 1000 years. Whatever we end up calling it I'm so thankful Christ did it for us! The Lord be with you.

So why can't both Christus Victor and penal substitution both be believed at the same time?
