I made one of these not too long ago out of Black Walnut. It was meant as decoration only. The lady that got it loved it. You make things just look way too easy Carl :)
I think I will have to stop watching your videos Carl, you always make it look so easy so I get disappointed when I try it! lol Another great video, thanks for sharing.
Nice video and turning. Carnauba wax is used throughout the food industry. M&M's are coated with it. Stores use it to shine up their fruit for display.
We crush garlic using that all the time. Its so pretty. I think the pestle is a great contrast in color. I'd keep it out of the sunlight. It'll change color over time anyways.
Great project Carl, the figure is ideal for this sort of project. Must get me some Cocobolo, looks like it's nice to turn. Good job again my friend. Take care Mike
Nice job Carl !! Cocobolo is a lovely wood and you seem to use it a lot in the US, I do not know of a similar wood here in GB ( shame) Your huge scraper is a great tool, looks like it makes getting a nice even curve on the inside of bowls a lot easier. Keep it up...........cheers...Andy.
Hi Carl, This is as always a nice to be looking video and instructive. I speak very little English and translate it to me with "Google Translate" I find your videos very interesting.
Hi Peter. I suggest that the item is decoration only merely because the paste wax isn't food safe. If you wanted to just use a food grade oil or not treat it at all and let "nature" do it's thing by naturally adding flavor as you grind. that's fine too. I bet the smell would be interesting after a while. As for the rattling, it could be the density of the wood that causes it, I know that when I turn dense wood, I get a lot more noise than if it was say Cedar.
Hi Peter, the paste wax is NOT food safe. I just use the mineral oil and salad bowl oil for a food safe finish. The had a small piece come off and wasn't true that is way t was rattling. Take care, Carl
Love ya work there Carl nice job mate,i will have to source out a place here in Australia that sells Cocobolo it looks a beautiful timber..It is a native timber to America Carl...cheers Mick!!!
Just got mine made yesterday and being from Texas it's made out of mesquite which is hard as a rock and beautiful Too ! Should last for years. Great video as always !!!
Hi again Mike, according to one data sheet Carnauba wax which is in Crystal clear paste wax is toxic, then still another sheet saying that it is non toxic. So on the side of caution I'd have to go with yes it is toxic.
Hi Charlie, I was under the impression, that once the solvents in the paste wax have evaporated, it is deemed to be food safe. Please correct me if I'm wrong in thinking this. Take care Mike
Carl I had a friend ask me to make her a Mortar and Pestle for her to use in her kitchen. My question would be what wood would be hard enough to withstand this type of use? Thanks William
Thank you Andy, Cocobolo comes from South America, and is pretty easy to find here in the US. That scraper comes in very handy with bowls. Take care Carl
Thank you for your interest I ask about how to buy a machine like this How much is the final price I also want to buy machine cnc 3d In order to accomplish a small business thanks Carl
I can watch you work all day long. You make it look so easy! I just received a request from my sister in law for a mortar and pestle. Any idea on wood species? Dried or green wood? Any special finishing tips? Also, what did you dip the sandpaper in for sanding? Thank you!
Thank you Tom! Dry hard Maple is a good wood for this project. I was sanding with paste wax and mineral oil. I would only use mineral oil as a finish for projects like this.
Hi Carl. Love this video. You know, I did a little search on making a pestle and mortar and your video was the first to show...... awesome! I am a bit of a foodie as well as a woodie, and I have a few granite P&M but I have always wanted a wooden one, but the ones I have seen for sale are tiny and I really would like one thats pretty big. and the pestle I would like to be a bit longer than the normal ones, Because if you have extra length more energy is transfered to the spices that are to be crushed. Anyway, great vid as usual. greets!
Hi John, I am always worried about using Walnut oil on things I give as gifts just in case someone has a nut allergy. Am I right to be concerned or is Walnut oil safe in this respect? Thanks Alan
Thank you for the advice it was much appreciated. Keep up the good work. I thoroughly enjoy your videos they are very interesting and not pretentious in any way. Thanks Mark
Hi Mike, I have really no idea on that, I have been told though that paste wax is not food safe, so I just don't use it on anything that I even remotely will use for food. Carl may be able to give you a better idea on this issue.
I'm pretty new to turning and I seem to have the hardest time just getting the wood in the chuck, on the screw chuck, basically just mounted...do you have a video that goes through that step by step?
What type of wood was the mortar and the pestle made out of? BTW love your channel thanks. Im working on an eagle project and i'm making Magic Wands like the ones you make for kids in hospitals, and your videos are showing me how to do it, and what stuff to use. Thanks.
Hi Mark, for a food safe I will use beeswax and mineral oil. I mix it 10 parts wax 1 part oil.
I made one of these not too long ago out of Black Walnut. It was meant as decoration only. The lady that got it loved it.
You make things just look way too easy Carl :)

We crush garlic using that all the time. Its so pretty. I think the pestle is a great contrast in color. I'd keep it out of the sunlight. It'll change color over time anyways.
Your right Wayne, wood selection is very important. I made this just as a display. Yes mineral oil would be an appropriate food safe finish.
Thanks for letting me know Carl.
Take care
Mike
Great project Carl, the figure is ideal for this sort of project. Must get me some Cocobolo, looks like it's nice to turn. Good job again my friend.

Hi Carl,
This is as always a nice to be looking video and instructive.

I find your videos very interesting.
I think both Ash and Beech would be good for this project.
Was just starting one of these!
A great little points scorrer I can make for the missus. Thanks for another great video.

Hi Mike, the Stapes paste wax is NOT food safe. I just use the mineral oil and salad bowl oil for a food safe finish.
Take care, Carl
Great job as always
Very cool Carl. Great project.
Nice little project, will make one for the charity shop.
Hi Peter, the paste wax is NOT food safe. I just use the mineral oil and salad bowl oil for a food safe finish. The had a small piece come off and wasn't true that is way t was rattling.
Take care, Carl
You beat me to this one. I have a mortar & pestle on my list from osage orange.
Good job.
Alan Stratton
Your skew chisel, is it rounded or flat across the cutting edge. An excellent project, thanks Carl.
Pete I will try to get a video up tomorrow explaining that.
CARL great job
Love ya work there Carl nice job mate,i will have to source out a place here in Australia that sells Cocobolo it looks a beautiful timber..It is a native timber to America Carl...cheers Mick!!!
Just got mine made yesterday and being from Texas it's made out of mesquite which is hard as a rock and beautiful Too ! Should last for years. Great video as always !!!
Thank you, I've only turned a little bit of Mesquite and you're right It's hard as a rock.
Nice to see your still at it Carl. Drop over some time
Thank you Dougie
Thank you Charles
i recently started turning boxes out of oak. i'm not used to hard wood! it definitely takes a little longer, and a little more control :)
Yes hardwood can be a little difficult, but finishes much nicer.
Hi again Mike, according to one data sheet Carnauba wax which is in Crystal clear paste wax is toxic, then still another sheet saying that it is non toxic. So on the side of caution I'd have to go with yes it is toxic.
you make my turning look like childs play lol
MrTikisteel lol Thank you
Amazing video!
+TarasDoesDIY Thank you so much!
Carl Jacobson Haha my pleasure :). I'm gonna make one of these soon. Cheers for inspiration.
Have you ever made a mortar and pestle with an inlayed copper on the bottom of the bowl and end of the pestle?
Hi Charlie,
I was under the impression, that once the solvents in the paste wax have evaporated, it is deemed to be food safe. Please correct me if I'm wrong in thinking this.
Take care
Mike
Carl I had a friend ask me to make her a Mortar and Pestle for her to use in her kitchen. My question would be what wood would be hard enough to withstand this type of use? Thanks William
I'm glad you found it.
Nice piece. What was the paste you used when you did the sanding?
Thank you Phil! I sand with Howard or Walnut oil. Here's a video I did last week talking about it. ruclips.net/video/nDFBXMQL9WY/видео.html
Thank you Mick, Cocobolo comes from South America, and is a beautiful wood to turn.
Way cool Carl. Thanks.
Great job! I always admire how quickly you do these projects. You make it look so smooth and easy. Thanks...
Hi Carl what paste do you use when sanding, at present I don't use anything other than dry paper?
Thanks
Mark UK
you're bad ass!
LOL! thank you
Hi Carl ,,seem your lathe spindle has a wobble,, is that why we see you using a " Robust ",, Have a great 2019 ,, Regards Alf
Hey Alf, I don't think it had a wobble. It might of just been the wood, but yes i upgraded to the Robust :) Happy New Year!!
Thanks for taking the trouble to clarify Charlie, I must agree with you after what you have said. I learned something valuable today :)
Take care
Mike
nice piece. What size was the original round blank?
Thank you Phil!! I think it was about 4"
@@CarlJacobson thanks very much
Thank you John, I would definitely go with mineral oil, or Walnut oil. I wouldn't use Cocobolo as anything other than ornamental.
Beautiful :)
Just wondering if it would be ok in ash, or beech. interested in your thoughts.I
Beautiful Carl, my brother as just asked me to do one for him.
Thank you Dennis, these make great gifts too.
Thank you Andy, Cocobolo comes from South America, and is pretty easy to find here in the US. That scraper comes in very handy with bowls.
Take care
Carl
What is it you're dipping your sandpaper into?
Mark Webb I use 10 parts paste wax to 1 part mineral oil. It helps cut down on the sanding dust.
Carl Jacobson As I'm not familiar with such waxes, is it a wax specifically for wood and can you give me a couple of suggestions.
Thanks
What do you do with all the projects you make?
What kind of oil or wax did you use?
Hofa Schule It's Paste wax and Mineral oil.
just a quick question. Im a young turner and I'm always wondering what to turn. Where do you get your ideas?
Muy bueno.
Keep your eyes open. You will be surprised what you see around you, that you can turn.
wooow i like so much .... also i want to buy one of wood turning pls tall me how much is it
dana Khalid I don't have any for sale now, let me see what I can do next week.
Thank you for your interest
I ask about how to buy a machine like this
How much is the final price
I also want to buy machine cnc 3d In order to accomplish a small business thanks Carl
What did you put on your sandpaper while you were sanding?
I sand with Howard beeswax amzn.to/2zvRCRk
Would red oak work for making one?
Yes I think it would work well.
Carl Jacobson thank you! I'm making one for a buddy and didn't want him using it and getting pieces in his food haha
Hi Carl, at the beginning here you extend your fingers over the work while roughing. Why do you do this?
You did a wonderful job, thanks for sharing.
Nice pestle & mortar - its always great to watch others work!
Thank you very much Stephen!
Thank you, yes these make great gifts.
I can watch you work all day long. You make it look so easy! I just received a request from my sister in law for a mortar and pestle. Any idea on wood species? Dried or green wood? Any special finishing tips? Also, what did you dip the sandpaper in for sanding? Thank you!

Carl Jacobson do you prefer any particular paste wax for friction sanding?
Is coco bello food safe?
I don't have any allergy to it, but some people do.
I'm not sure about that, but with something like Walnut oil some people have allergies.
I'm addicted to your videos dude
Don't worry, I won't start charging you..lol
It looks beautiful. Thank you for sharing you skills.

chris randell Thank you very much Chris, I would like to see some pics once you get it done.
Hi John, I am always worried about using Walnut oil on things I give as gifts just in case someone has a nut allergy. Am I right to be concerned or is Walnut oil safe in this respect?
Thanks
Alan
Thank you Tony, It's a fun project :)
I sell some of them, but I give most away to family and friends.
Lovely project Carl. Two beautiful woods. These would make great presents for friends who cook a lot.
Best wishes,
Alan.
Thank you, Yes I'm sure she will love it!
Thank you for the advice it was much appreciated. Keep up the good work. I thoroughly enjoy your videos they are very interesting and not pretentious in any way. Thanks Mark

What oil is that
It's Mineral oil
Hi Don, his skew is slightly curved :)
Thank you Alan, yes a great gift Cocobolo is probably not the best wood to use though.
Take care, Carl
Cute Mortar & Pestle!! you are great!
In addition, it may just be the dryness of the wood that is causing a rattling noise.
hi, nice vid! - shouldnt the inside surface be left unlacquered/unvarnished...since edible stuff will be ground there?
I used a food safe finish :)
Thank you MIke, It's a beautiful wood to turn, but it can cause skin irritation.
Take care
Carl
Yes Micha is right, Cocobolo can be irritating to work with, and I don't want it all over me.
Thanks.
