- The history of Vienna's urban rail system (Stadtbahn to U-Bahn) from 1898 to 2021 and its future expansion plans are shown in this animation.
Note:
1. Stadtbahn sections from Hauptzollamt to Praterstern, and Penzing to Hutteldorf Hacking are not included in the length/station count for Stadtbahn.
2. The U-Straßenbahn is not a separate system, but an underground section of the Straßenbahn (tram network).
3. The history of the S-Bahn network is only shown briefly in the background.

You always now when you are in an old stadtbahn station ther have ther old style. Travelling in Vienna stations is a bit like time-travelling because all the stations are still as they were bild so you have really old and modern stations on the same network. Thank you so much
Sounds cool
Very true. Each line has it's own style and also the different sections of lines, depending on when they were extended.
The trains are also differ on each line. U6 has completely unique trains. U3 tends towards an older model, U2 is only modern models and U4 got some of both.
Very cool video. Nice to see for oneself. The old people always argue about what extension was which year and so on.
@@florianklee9405 also, mildly amusing is that some of the underground is overground :)
@@higgins007 Is mostly bilding extortions overground is way cheaper.
@@florianklee9405 U3 can only have the older model because it is Insulated and caning trains would give holes again.
Vienna U-Bahn has this weird feature of having turntables in their depot because one of the lines “only make left turns” so they have to flip the trains over from time to time to equalize wear. It’s a pretty unique system
You need to tell me wich line this is on
@@stekra3159 I didn’t ask, but my guess is U4
Wtf that's so weird but really awesome to know
almost every circle lines have that feature..
I live in Vienna and no U-Bahn has to do that. The trans can operate in both derections without turning. All Tram Lines musst do that becouse the dors are only on one side.
I hope i could help.
I am a European and visited a lot both in Europe and the world and for me personally, Vienna is my favourite city of the entire world where I would live and transport plays a big part in that choice. Great video as always 👍🏻
Agree. Beautiful architecture, colourful buildings and roofs, dignified atmosphere - a picture-perfect city representing the Europe I had always wanted before the World let itself become stupidly Americanised, cheap and vulgar.
I live there and it's ok. It's like most other big citys, loud, expensive and a shot ton of people. But the Ubahn Netz ( subway ) is quite good. It takes about one hour to get from one end of the city to the other. The architecture is nice but most of it is only in the center ( like a few miles radius) the rest is normal boring houses. But there is quite a bit of greenery and if you want you can reach almost everything by bike because the bike lanes are amazing. Most of them are not on the street and they are big enough that cars could drive there
But not anymore for all people!
A very hard-to-make video of a very complex system. You nailed it!
Cool Video
I just saw three small mistakes I want to point out
1. The colour of the U4 was originally purple and the line was recoloured in 1978
2. The colour of the U5 will be turquoise instead of blue
3. In 2024, the U2 will get an infill station (An den alten Schanzen) between Aspernstraße and Hausfeldstraße
Gönn doch einfach
4. Michelbeuern didn't REopen in 1987 (it was only a freight station until 1927)
5. In May 2021 U2 stopped operating between Schottentor and Karsplatz
Still a great video!
6. Schottenring was a U2/U4 cross-platform station until U2 was extended further to the east in 2008, so between 1980-2008 the routing around Schottenring should look a bit different, since they built a whole new station for the U2 extension.
7. There was a brief period of time between 05.09.1981 - 25.09.1981 where lines U2/4 and U4/2 existed.
I’d like to add: The U6 does also have the station Niederhofstraße between Längenfeldgasse(Transfer with the U4) and Meidling
Right now I'm playing the Vienna scenario in Cities in Motion, it has been a blast probably one of my favorite level in the game
Also check out Tram Sim: Vienna!
I'm happy that somebody is still playing Cities in Motion too.
The first "Cities in Motion" is such a charming little gem of a game. I also enjoy the soundtrack from it.
Ja servas! Endlich mal die Wiener Linien
I’ve never been to Vienna, but from the map it honestly looks like one of the best designed systems in the world
5:16 I just checked on google maps: You can see the viaduct of that old branch on satellite view. It's slowly rotting away, the tracks are removed and the first few meters have been removed to make room for a building right next to the new stop Spittelau. That's the only part removed, though, you can still see the entirety of the viaduct from beyond that building to Heiligenstadt.
The viaduct which was connecting the Gürtel line with the danube canal line is also still there but has been repurposed as bicycle and pedestrian lane. This is actually a fairly quirky and spectecular connection between the major danube canal cycling corridor and the heart of the 19th district.
The viaducts along Heiligenstädter Lände are currently rotting away, although a certain share of them is used as storage etc. There are plans of doing somethign "NYC Highline" style, even if less fancy but those plans are just that, plans.
The viaduct is still there. The building was build on top of it. You can have a good look of it from the line U6.
I love it when you do a video like these, we'll see what the next Metro System will be
Hope you had as much fun making this as I had fun watching it.
Really cool video, one of the best videos I’ve ever seen that focuses on the construction of the Vienna U-Bahn👍 But one thing I noticed was that it said Underground S (Untergrundstraßenbahn) But they were actually called USTRAB (for Unterpflasterstraßenbahn)
First time I’ve seen you did a video with Drum & Bass music on it. Nice. Quite jazzy as well. Vienna is a beautiful city in Europe.
One of the best Subways!!
Greetings from Austria.🇦🇹
What a nice work! So good to see the history of trains and stations I go by everyday!
It has a good reason why in 2003 Lerchenfelder Straße was closed… it’s because it was too close to Rathaus and Volkstheater station, you were able to see the other 2 stations from there directly, distance to Rathaus was not even 200 m. But also today you can still see Volkstheater station from Museumsquartier station. The closed station itself still stands but on the glasses where once the escalators went down today is a painting gallery visible from outside.
Nah you can't, since Rathaus is after a curve. You can see Museumsquartier and Lerchenfelder Straße (if the lights are on) from Volkstheater.
But seriously, why is everyone spitting nonsense in this comment section?
@@kensukefan47 Sorry, I confused that. It is Volkstheater and Museumsquartier, you are right. I don't live in Vienna but use to visit it often due to private reasons. But except my confusion I didn't wrote nonsense, did you refer to my own comment?
@@GUNordDX it mostly refers to the top comment with turnabouts.
The closure mostly happened because the platform length on the U2 was extended (originally it only used 4-car trains, but was upgraded to allow for 6-car trains like the other lines). With the close proximity between the stations that would have meant that the platforms would have almost touched.
Today the former station is used as an electrical substation and for ventilation (that's why the old access buildings still exist on the surface).
Very cool video but the U5 is going to have a turquoise color. :)
I read U5 like US lol

I do not know, if i liked the information more, or the music and it's "fitting-ness" and the editing of it :)
I'm an expat who's lived in Vienna as a kid in the mid-90's and now as an adult. The public transport grid is possibly one of the greatest amenities Vienna has, because these are just the metro lines! The trams, buses and regional trains all merge flawlessly under one general ticketing system. It truly spoils you.
A Video I didnt know that I need to see. Thanks for that 🖤
You might be the first youtube who talked about the vienna subway on english (because other pepole did it in german) by the way nice video
i love that old school jungle dnb themed background music!
The reason why U1 got extended to Kakran sooner than expected is because the Reichsbrucke colaped so they had to rebild the bridge any way.
The bridge collapsed on August 1st 1976, I don’t think that’s the direct reason it was extended to Kagran, but re-building it they transposed the plans to include metro too and so it was already possible to open Kagran by 1982. originally Kagran wasn’t planned in the first years of metro service.
I need to watch your great job with the Barcelona metro system
I live in Vienna and thank you for the Video 😁
I can't wait for you to make one of these for Boston!
I know it's a good day when this Chad called metro liner uploads a video
I like your musicselection this time. Thanks for chosing dnb!/ drum and bass! :D ❤
Your videos are very fun to watch, as always! It would be appreciated if you could do a Montreal video.
what funny is, is that I just came back from a holiday in Vienna. so its funny that the video is now uploaded.
Wow! there's surely a lot of ghost tunnels, tracks and stations in this city
I was waiting for this video!!! greetings from Vienna!
Ah yes! Finally my home!
Can you do Bangkok?
There were period where first phase of blue line (which circle around crescent downtown that surround inner city) arent connect with purple line (northwest urban-suburban area)
And like everybody in the northwest part is really salty, the traffic between those unconnected line is so high that it force MRT to do connection station before the phase 3 of blue line begin
Hi Budapest have only 4 Metrolines (M1-M4) and 5 HÉV (suburban train H5-H9)... After London the secound metro is in Budapest in 1896. First in the continent. Today this line is M1. Planned connect the nord and south HÉV. This new line the M5. ☺️
Great video! Can you do Barcelona next?
For completeness: Another station (An den alten Schanzen) is pre-built already along U2, to be finished in the next few years: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/U-Bahn-Station_An_den_alten_Schanzen
Nice drawing from Vienna Subway.
i strongly recommend you do it of Mexico’s City!! such an interesting system and is incredible how fast its expanded!!

Thanks for making this!

Really interesting as always 😃
I wonder what Metro Liner's next stop is. I hope it's Dublin but it probably won't. 🤔🤔
I can’t wait to see Copenhagen Metro and S-trains 😁
one of the coolest Videos in RUclips👌👌
Lots of changes that could be made on the Vienna Metro :
1. Looks like U5 is going to be a useless line for 2 years.
2. (Huge one)
2A. U-Strabenbahn removed, the upper bit extends through north and possibly slightly south. U7 line is created.
2B. The lower parts extend both east and west. The west bit of U2 is transferred too. U8 line is created. This is very important since there is basically no transfers in the south part of the U-Bahn.
3. U3 extends to Hernals and to the southeast
4. U5 extends west to the GG maps Hernals and also extends southeast
5. U2 really needs to extend MORE south.
I'm not from Vienna, and I have been on a lot of videos. This is my ideas based on the grey, more developed parts.
Your videos are so satisfying!!!
I like that. Waiting for U5. Are you going to make a video about post-Soviet metro systems? Kyiv etc. A have a video about Kyiv Metro Expansion. But you can find some info on the Internet as well.

in japan, closing subways isnt major accident, but is closing subways major accident at abroad?
Could you please do Budapest next? Maybe you could add suburban trains (HÉV) there as well because there were not so many changes in the metro system.
Hopefully coming here to study!
@1:55 - What's the difference between a subway network and an underground tramway?
Also, the work they're doing on MariaHilfe right now is for the U2 expansion to Matzleinsdorfer?
The underground tramway is just a few km of standard tramway network built underground to avoid conflict with heavy overground car trafic. Same carriages are used as on the surface. Tramway is usually used for shorter distances, with stops closer to each other and its tracks are often next to or in the street, on same ground level as other motorized transport. You can compare it with a standard road network.
Subway is typically underground (which is not fully true for some of the lines), faster, stops are wider apart from each other, and the tracks are always exclusive with no crossings. --> highway network.
The U2 line from Karlsplatz to Schottentor is currently interrupted and undergoes preparational rework for the U2/U5 extension, e.g. all platforms are beeing equipped with sliding doors for the new driverless trains. The part of the U2 line from Karlsplatz crossing the lower end ofMariahilfer Strasse will be taken over by the new U5. The future U2 will cross Mariahilfer Strasse at Neubaugasse (sharing a station with U3), 6:39
@@mazchen Thank you!
Driverless trains? I had no idea. So the sliding doors protect riders on the platform from the track?
I was on the U3 the other day past Ziegler, Neubau heading towards the MQ, when the ride felt a bit longer than usual. It was at that moment I realized a station had been closed when I got off at Volkstheater.
@@thomasspool exactly, a new era for Viennaa.
U3 actually hasn't changed, but you just can't change to the U2 at Volkstheater until fall next year (and then only for a few years until that branch of the U2 becomes the U5)

Felicitaciones a los trabajadores estan avanzado a construir los nuevos trenes cada estaciones y lineas en el Metro de Viena, Austria
A video about Mexico City's transport system would be good!
Why didn't you make Vienna's surface (S-Bahn) system together with the underground (U-Bahn), as you did with Berlin?
See those blue lines? Those are the S-Bahn.
U6 still operates like the Stadtbahn used to with overhead wires instead of 3rd rail and with different trains than the other lines. This was done because the bridges along the Gürtel were deemed too weak for the heavier metro stock.
No, weight wasn't the issue. After all, the line was built for steam trains and also with a military aspect in mind.
The problem was that the higher platforms would have required massive changes to the heritage-protected buildings.
I mean the U6 is just a rebranded Stadtbahn
We are still waiting for Istanbul, which features the second-oldest metro system after London and builds the most metro lines in the world right now!
Eh...
Plus a commuter rail tunnel under the Bosphorus
Would love to see malaysia on your next video!
I don't even ask for Warsaw - because video would be to short - but maybe similar to Wien you could incorpotate to such video Warsaw city trains: SKM and WKD. What is more - regional trains (operator: KM) going via Warsaw Cross-City Line operates as the city transport (common ticket system: municipal transport + WKD + KM).
Or maybe other CEE cities - eg. Budapest or Prague?
Alternatively - if we are talking about bigger underground system - the Moscow system looks interesting.
What program you use for make videos like this?
(Sorry for bad English)

Are you going to make Istanbul too?
U6 should be expanded from Siebenhirten to Mödling with a stop at Brunn am Gebirge and maybe Maria Enzersdorf.
Dude there's the Südbahn from Meidling. Why the hell do you need a U6?
Actually there are plans to increase the number of tracks to Mödling to four, which would allow to reduce the time between trains vastly.
Cool Video
Great video! But U5 has the wrong colour
Can you do Warsaw?
Is the U5 actually going to Hernals now? It was always said that Hernals was a possible later expansion, while for now the terminal would remain as Elterleinplatz...
Also, iirc it's color was decided to be turquoise because blue could be easily confused with the S-Bahn. (I wanted it pink smh)

Was too close to the next one. You could actually see the next station already.
Good documentation! But unfortunately the title is not very productive, as they give an overall overview of the fast connections of this city in their video. This overview rightly includes much more than just the subway, apart from the fact that in 1898 no one in Vienna thought of building a subway! As I said, good documentation, but the title doesn't fit at all!
