This song and Genesis (the band) are great. I highly suggest checking out some Peter Gabriel as well. Sledgehammer, Growing Up, Barry Williams Show and more are all good by Gabriel. I got to see him live once and it was a great show.
Phil is actually one of the most influential drummers of the last century. He created a gated reverb sound that is ubiquitous now, but invented by him. He started as the drummer for the band Genesis. But when the band's frontman left, Phil took over. Phil is a showman and, while he could drum and sing at the same time, he chose not to. He felt the kit-especially the cymbals-put a barrier between him and the audience. Thus, no cymbals on his kit here.
Genesis has a lot of long instrumentals, so that gave Phil a chance to run behind the kit when he wasn't singing. That created a thunderous drum sound because he would usually play in tandem or in concert with his drummer, Chester Thompson, who played for both Phil and Genesis on the road. That guitar player, Daryl Steurmer, also played for Genesis and Phil on the road. The dude with the white beard is Leland Sklar. He played just for Phil on tour. No Genesis. But don't cry for Lee. He's played on over 2000 albums from every star you can imagine. He's a legend. The keyboard player, Brad Cole, played just for Phil, not Genesis. He provides the electronic voice and the drum machine, in addition to keyboards.
Phil was in Genesis for maybe 30 years. For about half that time, he was also a solo act. The dude did both at the same time-toured for both at the same time! Only three musicians have sold 100M albums both in a band and as a solo artist. Phil is one. Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson were the others. Because he did both at once, and because Genesis was one of the era's top bands, Phil had more Billboard hits in the 1980s than anyone else, including MJ. You simply cannot understate how huge and ubiquitous this guy was in the 1980s. If you want to continue your tour, I suggest:
• Genesis Mama, the video. This is his best vocal. It's about a man with a dangerous obsession with a prostitute
• Phil Collins, Against All Odds. Watch live from Live Aid
* Phil Collins I Don't Care Anymore, live from Perkins Palace
* Genesis Home By The Sea 1 and 2, any live version. It's about a burglar who breaks into a haunted house and can't escape
With very few exceptions, such as Mama and I Can't Dance, Phil is best seen live. He usually sounds better live. And he's such a showman. When it comes time to challenge yourself with Genesis, seek out the In The Cage Medley with Afterglow. It's the best 20 minutes you'll spend listening to music. Cue up the lyrics or read beforehand, because they are hard to understand with so much going on.
Phil Collins is my favorite singer, Max. Glad you did the reaction. He has great songs with the band Genesis too. He became a solo artist but continued to play with Genesis until the mid-'90s. Peter Gabriel was also a member of Genesis until he went solo and Mike Rutherford the bass guitarist for Genesis formed the supergroup Mike + The Mechanics. Recommend music from any of the names listed above. So much talent and great music!
Phil Collins is an absolute legend. He's described himself as a drummer who can sing. He started as the drummer for Genesis, who have a huge catalogue that you should also check out. He then became the singer for them after their lead singer, Peter Gabriel left. Phil then started an incredibly successful solo career, became on Oscar winner for writing the music for Disneys Tarzan and completed his final tour with Genesis in 2022. He's been one of the most influential musicians of the past 40-50 years easily.
I had absolutely no idea that he did any of that but that's is such a great back catalogue of accomplishments. Big respect to him and I'll defo check out some more of his work 🙏
I don't think the first two will surprise anyone, but along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson is Phil Collins as the only three artists to sell 100 million albums as both a member of a group and as a solo artist.
@@camperoh didn't know that about phil collins 😃
The song is about finding his partner cheating
Phil Collins is a drummer that can sing. He was drummer in the band genesis.
Phil Collins is an icon and this song is iconic. Singing and playing the drums is difficult at best. He does it with ease! Love your reaction. You have a new subscriber!
Phil Collins was the singer/drummer for the band Genesis prior to going solo.
I had no idea!! But I'll definitely check our genesis are they similar genre of music to this song 'in the air tonight'?
TO. DIE. FOR. He’s brilliant! Love watching reactions to this! Still surprises me that some don’t know he’s the drummer. This song is about his divorce. He was pissed off. God forbid u piss him off cuz he’ll write a song about u and drag your ass all over the world! Well not anymore cuz he retired and isn’t well. Godspeed to him tho! LOVE PHIL! His music was part of the soundtrack of my young adult years.
Aww you listened to my request?! Thank you Max ❤. I'm sorry for being late to the party. I just got this notification. Crazy american past time.. watching our Superbowl.😂 I hope you love this song. I catch every video you put out. It's a good time ❤❤!
These were the days of Epic concerts! No auto tune, no twerking and no over production! Just pure talent and passion! Check out Phils song "Another Day in Paradise" about homeless people!
Phil released the studio version in 1982. This performance is 2004. He's still killing it. Genesis was a rare group where all 3 members had solo careers which they pursued while Genesis was between albums and tours. Phil, Mike and Tonys solo music were very different from the music they performed as a group. As a group they made very intricate songs. Check out their live performance in 1984 in Birmingham. They did a medley which is a great example of the Genesis catalogue. You won't be disappointed. Bravo Phil. Bravo Genesis. Best live group ever. I am a Phil and Genesis fanatic. Thanks for your reaction.
The grey beard is Leland Sklar is a famous bassist and Wrecking Crew member (session player)
He is great. He has his own You Tube channel as well incase you or someone else is not aware. Lots of good stories of old times and past performances.
He's a drummer who just happens to sing!!
Good job Max!!
As great as this performance is, "Another Day in Paradise" is a real heartbreaker.
Keep 'em coming broski!!
Thanks Jbird 🙏. We'll if the recommendation is coming from you then consider it added to the list broski 😁🙌
@@RaygoReactions I decided to watch Another Day in Paradise after makiing that post. The opening music lifted me up, and I tried to sing along, but got choked up halfway through the first line. It's a hard hitting tune about some ill shit going down in society. I hope you make it though that reaction OK.
Dude, seriously.. best reaction channel I've ever come across. Just brilliant, so good to see you enjoying the music 🥰
Subbed because of THIS reaction! 😊 Can't wait to catch up!!
Drumming and singing at the same time is so hard, except for Phil.
Absolutely! That level of control and rhythm is unbelievable 🙌
It’s about his very painful divorce and some lines are directed to the other man and some to his ex
This song was about a divorce. He came home a day early from a tour and caught his wife in bed with the interior decorator. Another of his divorce songs is I Don't Care Anymore. It is fire! I like angry Phil!
Didn't catch her in bed but found out about the affair. Read his book "Not Dead Yet". It's in the book
Max your reaction is awesome 😂❤!! It hits, doesn't it? I thought you might enjoy.. so glad 😊
ביצוע מדהים🤘אהבתי את התגובה שלך🤘🤘🤘🤘🫶🫶🫶
I was a teenager back then and there was nobody bigger than him but he was not a heart throb. I think that song doesn’t hit huge until that first drum rift. The rest of his music is more pop music than a rock anthem like this is❤
Oh contraire. He was one sexy beast. Absolutely love him.❤
I have a bigger crush on Phil now than I ever had back then. Back then I thought he was a little creepy because of Mama and Musical Box and a song called Like China where the lyrics are "I'll be so gentle, I'll hold you like China", but the melody is aggressive. He had a few creepy/aggressive songs. I love the songs, but was turned off of him as a result. Now that I'm an old lady, I think he's adorable.
Can you check out Dire Straits , Sultans of Swing , the Alchemy live concert version. PS. Phil Collins is also fantastic.
We can see a classic scene with this song, in the first episode of TV show "Miami Vice" (in 1984)
It's been said that the song is about him catching his wife in an affair and the emotional toll.
Don Henley from Eagles is another singing drummer. If you want to see him live, check out Hotel California (Live 1977). I don't think there's an Eagles song I don't like, and I can't even say that about my ultimate fave, Pink Floyd. They have great range, too. Compare their song Seven Bridges Road with Those Shoes, even if just for your own edification and not for your channel.
Also, the band Steely Dan is definitely not to be missed. ✌🏽🎸🤘🏽💗🖖🏽
Hey Max, have you ever seen the hangover? You should watch the hangover!
I did watch it many moons ago but I don't remember it at all, I just remember a Las Vegas stag do? Or was that one of the other hangover movies?
@
This song is featured fairly prominently in the movie.
Ohhh cool, I'll have to give it a rewatched, I know this is an Iconic song and have heard bits and pieces of it but just hadn't ever listened from start to finish if that make sense and I've never seen him live, he made it look effortless 👌
@@RaygoReactions
Phil Collins is great! One of the most iconic artist from that era of music. A great song of his that you need to check out is “land of confusion” but you have to watch the music video.
If you're up for some bluegrass music check out dead South live in the cavern
Fun fact ⭐..he is a fellow Brit 😎
Now I have your attention 😜.. Please check out Tom Petty "Free Falling" .I think you may enjoy it,as well. I grew up in California. San Fernando Valley and this song touches on everything I lived through ❤️.
Er ... Phil Collins, who rose to fame as the drummer of Genesis, can play drums? Who'd have thought it, eh?
Isn't it kind of weird that Janis Joplin video made you uneasy at the beginning and this one the beginning relaxed you
but now play the songs from the beginning at the same time 🤣🤣 one was zen , one was blackboard and nails, try to guess which is which lol
He's talking about his divorce
If you like Phil Collins then you should check out some Peter Gabriel. He's phenomenal and was also with Genesis once upon a time. Thanks for this video Max.
Hey Rob 👋 yes I'll definitely check out genesis, I didn't know he came from another band.. just shows how reacting to one video can open other doors 🚪
