Part 3: Melanie Gibb discusses deaths, confronting Chad and Lori & her message for them now

- It was Oct. 19, 2019. Melanie Gibb was in Arizona when she received a text message from a friend that Tammy Daybell had died.
She was startled but, then again, her friend, Lori Vallow, and Tammy's husband, Chad Daybell, had told her weeks earlier that Tammy would die.
"I didn’t know how they did it, but I knew it was part of the plan that she was supposed to pass away," Gibb tells EastIdahoNews.com. "Other people knew she was supposed to pass away because Chad had this information for quite a while."
Gibb called Lori and asked if she had heard about Tammy's death. Lori said she had not and acted surprised, but this was the same woman who had told Gibb for months that she and Chad were supposed to be together. It was only natural that after Tammy's death, Chad and Lori would get married.
"Their whole goal was to get together because they expressed to me many times that Tammy would be OK with this as she passed on," Gibb says. "(They said) she may not remember it now, but she had a mission to fulfill on the other side, so they both felt that was where she was supposed to go."
Lori and Chad married in a private ceremony on a Hawaiian beach on Nov. 5 - less than three weeks after Tammy's death. Unbeknownst to Gibb, Tammy's children, Joshua "JJ" Vallow and Tylee Ryan, were missing and hadn't been seen since September.
Gibb explained in part two of our series what Lori and Chad asked her to do when they returned to Rexburg, and police showed up at their door looking for the kids. Gibb refused to lie to officers but wanted to believe her friends. Finally, after a few days of soul-searching, she called Chad's phone and demanded answers. Lori answered.
"I think the first question I said is, 'Why haven’t you told us where the kids are?'" Gibb says. "(Lori responded), 'Well, for your safety, we cannot tell you.' That was alarming to me. What safety? Why am I in danger? I didn’t feel like I was in danger."
Gibb demanded to know why Lori had told the police that JJ and Tylee were with her. Lori admitted to lying but said it was for the safety of JJ. She refused to give Gibb any concrete answers on what was happening with the children and why she and Chad were not cooperating with law enforcement.
"It was a long conversation. I said, 'I’m concerned for you. I’m concerned for your salvation. This is darkness,'" Gibb recalls. "It was very uncomfortable talking to her. It was a disturbing conversation. I continued to tell her that I was concerned for them. And I am, and I was."
Gibb told Chad and Lori they were evil, and she did not have a testimony of the doctrine and teachings they had shared with her.
They hung up the phone and since that day, Gibb has not spoken to Chad or Lori again.

Yeah, I’m watching it at the almost end of Chad’s trial. I believe Melanie is being totally truthful. I like her.
You know, I’ve been judgmental against Mel G but after watching this, I believe she’s telling the truth and unfortunately got caught up with a group of people whose intentions were dark. I also believe she;s holding back some knowledge. For example I think she knows for a fact, those children are dead. But I don’t think she’s involved in any of the murders. Melanie P on the other hand….i totally think she’s involved in the attempted murder of Brandon.

It is possible to care about how Lori feels and to feel grief and outrage over the loss of the children at the same time. Plenty of people love their family members that are in prison and also grieve for their victims. Life is not one dimensional. SHe also lives by the scriptures very literally - Jesus says "Love your neighbor" NOT "Love your neighbor unless they do something bad."

It’s weird how much empathy she has for Lori being in prison but not for the kids that she believes are dead.
It is very strange. I have not been in her shoes, thank God, and I truly don't know how I'd feel or what I'd do if I was. I believe Jesus would want her to practice forgiveness and to have an attitude of compassion and kindness towards all people, even sinners. It had to be an incredibly difficult situation, I can't even imagine.

In the mormon faith, they believe that when you leave this world, you are remade flesh and soul together in the next life. They have a very strong fascination with that, even beyond regular Christians. My guess is this has to do with her faith. She thinks the kids are gone; this may be her way of coping with that. I appreciate her strength to remain peaceful in this time. That is a tougher road to walk than one of anger.
I've just watched Lori's family member, Zac Cox, explain how Melanie Gibb was very actively helping Lori defame and isolate Charles from all family members, how she was far closer with Chad Daybell too and how she even helped Lori collect and dispose of Charles's clothes and expell him from his own house. This lady shows no remorse whatsoever, she plays her own faith and involvement in Daybells's religious lunacies down, she poses as a sweet, innocent friend and calls herself "gullible," when in fact she was really active in all that craziness. She was "trying to discern if an ill child was really a zombie or not?!" Give me a break, it is all about herself, she was "betrayed," she was "gullible," she is a "good person" and a "loving" friend, but she was only afraid what the news would say about her and in the end she even feels entitled to lecture the world about Jesus, faith and what not. This woman is a dishonest, manipulative liar and she knew much more than she was willing to say here. This interview has nothing to do with telling the truth, she LOVED being told that she was special and she was in that cult up to her neck, she never did anything to help those poor kids, and this is just a sickening attempt to misrepresent her own involvement and to try to wash herself clean of her own fanaticism. She speaks as if she has now achieved a real pinnacle of spiritual understanding, after going through her trials with this whole nightmare. But you see few tears or any heartfelt emotion. How can you fully embrace what has happened, knowing how close you were to it, and not sob? I think there is a real disconnect in this woman between what she studies and the magnitude of the horror and sorrow this has caused for so many people.

I agree. This reporter (Nate Eaton) handled a topic that sounds insane to the general public but was able to balance that by asking detailed questions without judgement which kept Melanie open to answering.
I disagree he often gives her answers & excuses she shld be saying without prompting. I think he doesn’t want her to look bad but that’s not an interviewers job.

I think at this point people didn't know for sure that the kids had died. I think they hadn't discovered the bodies yet. I've watched this before and every time I am alarmed by Melanie's smile when you asked about her thoughts on Tammy's death. She was almost giddy. That's disgusting.

She's being very kind to Lori, a former friend, but has just said in her 3 interviews, in great detail, that Lori basically had Alex kill people for her, including the kids, and Lori & Chad wanted certain people out of the way so they could be together. Melanie is very, very smart to NOT make outright accusations, however evident but are not proven...that's why she's only saying just so much. I'm sure she was advised by legal counsel and is actually very brave to be saying what the truth is...which is way more than Lori's niece, sister, and mother are willing to do.
It is disturbing. This lady in the interview is using encouraging terms and words believing her friend will be encouraged and puts an end to this tragedy.

I appreciate Nate’s work in this interview. He knows the case, the timeline. He asks the questions that beg to be asked. He doesn’t let her incomplete answers lay. And he gives her the time to answer. I also appreciate that this interview isn’t chopped up by dramatic music and voiceovers or cuts to other footage.

I do believe she talked to the police back in December. But yes, why did no one tell Tammy what her husband claimed what was going to happen? So much for real friendship in this church community. So much for loving your brothers and sisters and being their keepers! Using each other and keeping secrets like these, these people do not know the meaning of love or friendship. A true friend would have taken Lori aside and confronted her with truth and love.

I think Chad probably did reveal his bullshit "revelation" to her. Hell, he told her a dead relative of hers came to her and said that she needed to quit playing Farmville or some similar game. She quit. She obviously believed Chad's bullshit so I wouldn't doubt if she knew this "revelation."
Is this before the kids were found? I mean, MG admits several times, in this video, and in part 2, that she know Chad and Lori has done something to them.
Gibbs is as much of psycho as Lori. She absolutely knew that chad and Lori were killing anybody who got in the way of their “mission” since before they killed Charles. And she didn’t try to go to the police or do anything to stop any of it. Or even to remove herself from the situation.

Once a person has committed time and energy to a weird cult it is very hard to step back from it and admit how wrong thinking you were. The fact that she even comprehended the Daybell's acts were criminal is a credit to her. I doubt many of us could stand up and admit the hard things she is admitting to. Idk...she was a good mom for many years. I think she was so desperate for his love and attention that she would do and believe anything. It's hard to say. She has mentioned twice how difficult JJ is to handle. He is by all accounts mercurial, unpredictable and highly emotional. He hasn’t had his medication for many months. Not only would he be too much for Tylee to handle but he would be very noticeable in almost any setting. Remember, Lori told Charles that she didn’t want the kids. Her new life didn’t have a place for a headstrong daughter and a special needs son.

Julie Geer Unfortunately until Tammy died the police had nothing to act on, even if they had been told it was being said she would die. It's not a crime to say you predict someone is going to die & then they do die. It would only be a crime if that predictor actually caused her death somehow, so even now that she has died, they have to prove she was actually killed & didn't just coincidentally die of natural causes, which is what they're trying to do.
