Sokolov feels and plays this music, the ultimate musician. Do we all realize how lucky we all are to be able to listen to such artists? It is a bliss... St Saens was clearly the last French romantic composer, his trageydy is that he probably died so late when his world had gone, but he was extremely inspired, he opened new ways for music.

Вы правы - безжалостное и беспощадное совершенство. Кроме восторга ничего не вызывает. Хочется потрогать исполнителя и убедиться, что он реально существует во плоти. Но исполнение Гилельса лично меня захватывает сильнее. Думаю, что там просто больше земного, эмоционального, нервного, личного, совпавшего у этих двух грандиозных личностей - Сен-Санса и Гилельса.
This was incredible. The work is an absolute cow to play at three-quarters the pace. Mr Sokolov drew out all of it's glorious resonances. Thank you a real treat.

It is no wonder this musician has a cult following as everything he touches seems to be fresh-minted in the most amazing interpretations - this being no exception.
Superb playing! My favorite version of this! Another great version is George Lee playing as a young boy! Then Lee playing in his late teens much improved! Well worth looking!!

This is the best I've heard from Sokolov. This recording makes me conclude that he's even better than Horowitz and Rubinstein were. I can't think of a single pianist who is better.

Of all the performances of this concerto i have heard, this one is the best. I heard nuances here i never heard in other recordings. The tempo is also to my liking, especialy the last presto movement, not to fast.

This is still the most frequently played French piano concerto- and a great work, one of 5 excellent concerti for piano and orchestra from Saint-Saens. The Number 5, - the most impressionistic - could easily replace the over-played Rachmaninoff concerti from time to time. And the Number 4 is another great work, quite severe. Complete sets are available- Roge/Dutoit, Collard/Previn and Malikova/Sanderling are all excellent. thank you for posting this, a fine performance.

I played 5th during my student years and was so surprised when I found that it was almost unknown by the majority of the academy population. It's so beautiful.... the world really doesnt do it justice.

Goodness! It seems he was 17 or possibly 16 by the time of this recording. And yet, if he were 68, would it have mattered? Who can ever better this - where, when? No splashing and echoing in the Presto - every single bit carved out like a diamond's facet: perfectly clear, perfectly articulated, brilliant, vibrant. And the beginning - what can I say... let them deaf illiterates enjoy their Malofeev and Yuja Wang, Lang-Lang and whatever product the mass production throws at them: this is where art existed. Every bit of this recording is a MASTERPIECE!

Saint-Saëns was a stupendous composer, who wrote a large number of astonishing melodies. Unfortunately his legacy is not always remembered as it should, perhaps because he was outside the Germanic-Italian axis of classical music. PS. Great recording, one of the best I've ever heard. I do not really like the Rubinstein's - it's too slow in my opinion.
Jean-Philippe Collard's recording of all 5 Saint-Saens concerti has been my gold standard for all of them. But this Sokolov interpretation is marvelous.

Those of you who hear John Williams's influences in this piece - especially regarding the Star Wars march - should, if you haven't already, have a listen to Mars, the Bringer of War by Gustav Holst - Williams pays a direct homage to Holst in the middle of the march - a fabulously emotive 5/4 ostinato. I nearly lost it when I heard the original for the first time. The whole Suite (the Planets) by Holst is just lovely!

Great rendition! I've been listening to George Li's version (both when he was 12...! and as an adult) - really astounding. I marvel at his technique, emotional approach and clear tone. However, Sokolov's a smidgin slower, which brings out a lot of clarity and a different feel. Amazing how the same piece can do that.
Many a critic have referred to the late Moura Lympany as the best pianist with regards to the Saint Saens piano concerto. I have to agree with the critics.

Those of you who hear John Williams's influences in this piece - especially regarding the Star Wars march - should, if you haven't already, have a listen to Mars, the Bringer of War by Gustav Holst - Williams pays a direct homage to Holst in the middle of the march - a fabulously emotive 5/4 ostinato. I nearly lost it when I heard the original for the first time. The whole Suite (the Planets) by Holst is just lovely!

Great rendition! I've been listening to George Li's version (both when he was 12...! and as an adult) - really astounding. I marvel at his technique, emotional approach and clear tone.
However, Sokolov's a smidgin slower, which brings out a lot of clarity and a different feel. Amazing how the same piece can do that.

Should listen to the late Moura Lympany. Outstanding pianist back in 1945.

Yes indeed, and I have heard it. But bare in mind that she died in the late 60s or early `70s
Many a critic have referred to the late Moura Lympany as the best pianist with regards to the Saint Saens piano concerto. I have to agree with the critics.
