Sokolov feels and plays this music, the ultimate musician. Do we all realize how lucky we all are to be able to listen to such artists? It is a bliss... St Saens was clearly the last French romantic composer, his trageydy is that he probably died so late when his world had gone, but he was extremely inspired, he opened new ways for music.

This is still the most frequently played French piano concerto- and a great work, one of 5 excellent concerti for piano and orchestra from Saint-Saens. The Number 5, - the most impressionistic - could easily replace the over-played Rachmaninoff concerti from time to time. And the Number 4 is another great work, quite severe. Complete sets are available- Roge/Dutoit, Collard/Previn and Malikova/Sanderling are all excellent. thank you for posting this, a fine performance.

And yet, if he were 68, would it have mattered? Who can ever better this - where, when?
No splashing and echoing in the Presto - every single bit carved out like a diamond's facet: perfectly clear, perfectly articulated, brilliant, vibrant. And the beginning - what can I say... let them deaf illiterates enjoy their Malofeev and Yuja Wang, Lang-Lang and whatever product the mass production throws at them: this is where art existed.
Every bit of this recording is a MASTERPIECE!

Saint-Saëns was a stupendous composer, who wrote a large number of astonishing melodies. Unfortunately his legacy is not always remembered as it should, perhaps because he was outside the Germanic-Italian axis of classical music.
PS. Great recording, one of the best I've ever heard. I do not really like the Rubinstein's - it's too slow in my opinion.

Jean-Philippe Collard's recording of all 5 Saint-Saens concerti has been my gold standard for all of them. But this Sokolov interpretation is marvelous.

    """ amazing interpretation """

Those of you who hear John Williams's influences in this piece - especially regarding the Star Wars march - should, if you haven't already, have a listen to Mars, the Bringer of War by Gustav Holst - Williams pays a direct homage to Holst in the middle of the march - a fabulously emotive 5/4 ostinato. I nearly lost it when I heard the original for the first time. The whole Suite (the Planets) by Holst is just lovely!

Great rendition! I've been listening to George Li's version (both when he was 12...! and as an adult) - really astounding. I marvel at his technique, emotional approach and clear tone.
However, Sokolov's a smidgin slower, which brings out a lot of clarity and a different feel. Amazing how the same piece can do that.
