- Hello RUclips!
I've had a lot of requests for these deeper FM style leads, the more night-time/forest psy sounds. So this is a tutorial on how to get those types of leads by using a technique called wavefolding, and how to achieve it in Serum.
I hope this helps you out!

Accurate Wavefolding in Serum and Forest FM leads - Creating Psytrance
I love making moisty FM leads for Forest psy and therefore I love this video.
welcome to the dark side bro, please keep it up.
much love and respect from serbia
Fantastic! You are helping many new producers!
Amazing sound, however, the equation for wave folding is super simple and you don't require post-processing magic.
sin(a* sin(x*pi)) -> NOTE: you need to substitute the a to a number, so what you put in serum is like sin(4 * sin(x*pi)) or sin(3.4 * sin(x*pi))
where the outer (first) sin creates the folds;
a controls the number of folds (mirror bounces you need, can be a real number like 6.2, 3.6);
and lastly, for the sin(x*pi) you can put your any periodical equation. Basically, it is your input waveform...
Also, I've just checked the serum docs, and you can generate the whole wavetable, so the final equation should look like this:
sin((1+(3*z))*sin(x*pi)) -> where 3 is the variable that controls the number of folds
Ah wow thank you! Like I said I don't know the maths behind it, this is just the way I found to recreate the effect :)
@@DashGlitch And everyone feels blessed for your habit of sharing these videos :D
@@rokibeat234 Sorry if it is a dumb question, but how works with a square/saw/triangle waves? Thank you
Diogo Ferreira, In general, you need to look up the Fourier series for the specific waveform and substitute the sin(x*pi) to that formula. But the waveforms you mentioned are simple waveforms and there are simplified ways to produce them. If you don't want to dive deep into the maths of it the easiest way is to open the drop-down next to the formula input field. Under the singles, you will find the basic waveforms. So for example, the formula for the saw is super simple it is literally x. The equation will be sin((1+(3*z))*x)
love that bassline. so crisp
Man you're a legend
Instantly amazed!
love the work brother!
Man, that's an incredibly valuable tutorial, thank you so much !
your videos are awesome!! watch them everytime, sometimes for curiosity, sometimes to learn stuff and it's always a pleasure! Thanks ;)
Great vid man. Watched and tweaked along with.... Created useful sounds with your help
That was so cool! Thanks for sharing!
Awesome!
Holy crap, this is awesome. There goes my next few days..
great. Thank you!
Damn dude!! Thanks soo soo much :D
Nice! Thanks so much for your explanation!
thank you man you made my day
Thank you for the wonderful tutorials :)
Thank you so much
Oh my God this helped me out so much, thank you. ^_^
I have learned a lot, thank you, you are the best!!!, peace, love and respect from México!
nice bro!!!! killer
thank you for sharing your knowledge
nice!
Wow this video helped me click what fm truly is
Thank you for touching on this! Not many good tutorials on forest at all.
Thank you! I'm glad I have slightly filled that gap :)
Great as usual ! Thanks
Wavefolding is more common in the modular world but for those that are interested by wavefolding and works in the box only you can also check Sugar Bytes Aparillo and is "Form" features , also Repro-1 got a built in effect called Jaws that is very cool wavefolder . And last but not least , Pigments from arturia have a really cool built in wavefolder function .
Thanks :) I've had a look at the other ones, but never explored them yet, Pigments seems nice, i've been playing with it briefly to see if it's worth a video review
@@DashGlitch Pigments is very good imo i used it a lot on my last productions. It's close to serum on many points , what makes the difference for me is mainly the sequencer , you can program polyrhythmic patterns very easely and the randomness options are really cools . I also really love the modulaors triggers options .
super_thx
on point.
*understates excitement: "like.. Cool man"
broooo :') that was fun
YES YES YES finally :D
Thank you!
I'm thinking you could counter the high frequency harshness by modulating the resonance in the opposite direction than the cutoff (or maybe the drive)? Great tutorial. I'm definitely going to try this out in the track that I'm working on. Going to go for the more robotic and metallic sounds. Like you said, the variety of sounds you can get from this is astounding! This technique is definitely worth looking into whether you produce forest or not. Once again, I'm really impressed by the tutorial. Really impressed by the kick and bass too!
fantastic as always. Great teaching leason... now i have new plugins as well...^^
Super Useful. Thank You! Please Make More Videos Related To - DarkPsy / Forest Style Music
Dude you just gave me a new career xD
FUCK YOURE BY FAR THE BEST RUclipsR OUT THERE THANKS AL
Genius method. Thank you and thanks to @rokibeat234 for the extras.
Love u
i love you
I love Bro!! jaja
Wavetable SSQ with FM from Razor (or opposite) also gives some nice FM leads.
Even just a single SSQ on the default wavetable position, and a bandpass filter with high resonance can make some nice foresty sounds.
@@Swennet Definitely!
Straight outta Collective Intelligence’s recipes.
@@satyasrikar709 You bet!
Works like a charm with a BP12/24 filter and some LFOs. Thanks again 💥
7:43 love that face impression ,)
🤓
8:10 Technically, every single wave form you could ever come up with is a sum of basic sine waves. It has been mathematically proven that any periodic signal can be decomposed into a sum of sinusoides. That's what the harmonic table on top of this screen is showing you. If you single out any of those harmonics, it will be a basic sine wave, each with a different frequency and amplitude, but a basic sine wave.
oof thats fire
yeeeeeeew!!!!
more forest FX/Lead tutorials please
This tutorials are amazing
hows ur producing journey holding up?
@@giln4689 just experimenting with sounds and loops...never managed to lay down a track!
cool tutorial man

Really enjoyed this level up, thanks! Any pointers on a video that more thoroughly explains your delay process? Can you get a pretty similar sound using serum's delays or any waves stuff?
Was looking through a bunch of your stuff last night and couldn't find it.
Yea although I usually bypass the delay when rendering so I can apply it while arranging the audio files 😃
Waves H-delay is also good but be sure to set analog mode to off
Peace From Australia...!
Great Content, have you thought about starting up a Discord channel..?
Would you like a hand, forwards ever backwards never..!
Keep up the outstanding content, I like your overall concept and use of software that I personally love man.
✌
Hi! I use FL Studio and I don't know why but most of the times that I try to recreate a preset that saw in a video, it always sounds different. I have Colour Copy as well and used Fabfiler for the EQ. But even the "raw" sound without the fx sounds different in my case. Of course the random velocity is different in my case but the rest of the settings should be identical. Yet my sound is not as clear as yours. Do you have any idea why that is? Cheers
HI, NICE AND THANKS CAN U DO A TUTORIAL OF BIZARRE CONTACT LEADS????
nice bassline, did you make it in Serum?
sorry which is the video where u show the plugin you have used to create the notes?
Check my review of audiomodern riffer 😃
Do a Falcon or avenger version of this video please
More than 100% on Wider is not bad for anti-phases?
You've done well, my little Padawan... soon you will be here with us
anybody know the name of the plug in for midi random generator?
Audiomodern Riffer
ixm sure youve heard of arturia pigments . wondering what you think of that synth. me, its beast. but it HAS to take a awhole lot of cpu.
Yea, i've been playing with it, I might do a video :)
@@DashGlitch thad be awesome.
the cpu it takes is the only drawback for me
Speaking of Forest FM leads, how would you achieve a lead like in this track from Kabayun starting at around 0:17 (seems to be a simple tweak but I can't figure out what) ?
ruclips.net/video/Q0neqDBF5ZU/видео.html
lmao I literally found a way 30 minutes later
Yo Dash, dab on'em haters.
Do you know what kind of trance I'm doing ? It's a bit ambiantish with lowkey "psy" synths that I got from some banks I bought a long time ago haha (If you're interested lemme know)
I've Komplete so far and I'm trying to reproduce these on massive fm8 and spire. Would you mind doing these on other synths or serum is a really great synth for the kind of tutorials you're doing ? Been lurking for one year, forgot to sub everytime but eh I didn't this time :p
Learnt a lot from you thanks dood :)
Thanks man 😃 I’m busy doing some Spire tutorials too, I’ve done a few but not as much as Serum
@@DashGlitch Oh nice Spire finally :D
Cool idea! Just for accuracy I think that you are creating harmonics and not octaves. With second it is true cause second harmonic is also octave higher but 5 is not 5. octave, it is 5 harmonic. Try it with analyzer and you can see what I mean.
I soooo need to get you into Zebra too hahahaha
Have you tried Arturia’s new Pigments synth?
It’s basically serum, but I got it for $68, because I own the V collection
You can apparently get the V collection and serum for $168 (actually I think that’s an upgrade from analog lab to V collection and serum)
You should really check out pigments
Yea it’s cool, busy checking it out, it’s got some nice features but I still think Serum is superior for the everyday sound design stuff
Dash Glitch I can’t say
I decided against getting serum when I elected to get falcon, but saw pigments, compared the features to serum, and they seem disturbingly similar
Though it also seems to have elements of falcon as well
@@NeonPLotus Yea the cross-modulation and Turing machine/Binary are the strong points, but it lacks the same deep editing that Serum has, like I did in this video with the waveforms, it's also very CPU heavy and the filters are average. If it weren't so expensive for a first buyer I would get it instantly, but I need to weigh up all the aspects if i'm going to recommend it in a video
Dash Glitch I didn’t realize it was heavy on cpu usage. I’m running it on a late 2012 Mac mini, and haven’t noticed that
I haven’t delved deep enough to see if it can wavefold, however I can always do that in falcon or synthmaster
Or U-He zebra, or, I just realized, since they emulate modular, U-He ace or Bazille
I have way too many synths 😹😂🤣
The secret sauce is FM
Share this MIDI Pattern with us!!
It’s just 16th notes with random lengths and velocities creates with Riffer plugin
@@DashGlitch yeah man! i saw your last tutorial about Riffer! but i dont have Riffer...so...can you share that MIDI? only to study how it works (sorry about my english, i`m brazilian) =D
ok!
So sad i cant like your videos more than once!! unless i use a second account to do so! brb, loggin on my GF's YT
This is NOT wavefolding
Ok thanks for your opinion 👍 like I mentioned in the video a few times, the process is not wavefolding, but the outcome is very similar
@@DashGlitch not an opinion... also u said this is the only way of doing it in serum... also not true.. there are two wavefolding distortions in the fx section... :S
@@boimesa8190 not sure which video you're watching, but I certainly don't remember saying this was the only way to do wavefolding (in-fact, I did say "for the purists, this may not be exactly what you think is wavefolding, but the results are the same), I did however explain why I prefer using a waveform as oppose to an effect as it allows you to use that wavefolded shape as a mod source. The problem with the wavefolders in the FX section is they aren't key-tracked to the input key, therefore not as accurate, specifically when doing FM/AM etc.
You say that 'for purists' this is not wavefolding, but this is not wavefolding...for anyone, you don't need to be a 'purist' to know this. You say the waveform begins to 'look like wavefolding' but what about how it sounds? when you try out your technique the results sound so dissimilar to wavefolding that you immediately ditch the idea and start FM synthesis instead. If you know this isn't wavefolding, why title the video that.
I'm actually trying to recreate a sound which uses wavefolded osc as an FM modulator, this is the closest I came to it and the resulting overall sound was almost identical to the examples that my regular viewers were requesting, I explained this in the video.
bro good videos but plesse less talk 🤣
How are people going to learn from a purely screen-grab video, i'm trying to get people to understand the concepts so they can apply it, not have to follow the mouse on-screen and mimic everything for the same results over and over again.
The talks are the most important , it's the WHY , it's how you learn and can expand , with only the HOW
you just reproduce .
@@DashGlitch keep talking man, i love it
@Martin Neuroblast You can always just mute the video and listen to the 10 hour version of Whoopity Scoop whilst trying to follow the steps in Serum.
Keep talking pls
