  • Hello RUclips!
    I've had a lot of requests for these deeper FM style leads, the more night-time/forest psy sounds. So this is a tutorial on how to get those types of leads by using a technique called wavefolding, and how to achieve it in Serum.
    I hope this helps you out!

    Amazing sound, however, the equation for wave folding is super simple and you don't require post-processing magic.
    sin(a* sin(x*pi)) -> NOTE: you need to substitute the a to a number, so what you put in serum is like sin(4 * sin(x*pi)) or sin(3.4 * sin(x*pi))
    where the outer (first) sin creates the folds;
    a controls the number of folds (mirror bounces you need, can be a real number like 6.2, 3.6);
    and lastly, for the sin(x*pi) you can put your any periodical equation. Basically, it is your input waveform...

    • @rokibeat234
      @rokibeat234 5 лет назад +16

      Also, I've just checked the serum docs, and you can generate the whole wavetable, so the final equation should look like this:
      sin((1+(3*z))*sin(x*pi)) -> where 3 is the variable that controls the number of folds

    • @rokibeat234
      @rokibeat234 5 лет назад +1

      Diogo Ferreira, In general, you need to look up the Fourier series for the specific waveform and substitute the sin(x*pi) to that formula. But the waveforms you mentioned are simple waveforms and there are simplified ways to produce them. If you don't want to dive deep into the maths of it the easiest way is to open the drop-down next to the formula input field. Under the singles, you will find the basic waveforms. So for example, the formula for the saw is super simple it is literally x. The equation will be sin((1+(3*z))*x)

    I'm thinking you could counter the high frequency harshness by modulating the resonance in the opposite direction than the cutoff (or maybe the drive)? Great tutorial. I'm definitely going to try this out in the track that I'm working on. Going to go for the more robotic and metallic sounds. Like you said, the variety of sounds you can get from this is astounding! This technique is definitely worth looking into whether you produce forest or not. Once again, I'm really impressed by the tutorial. Really impressed by the kick and bass too!

    8:10 Technically, every single wave form you could ever come up with is a sum of basic sine waves. It has been mathematically proven that any periodic signal can be decomposed into a sum of sinusoides. That's what the harmonic table on top of this screen is showing you. If you single out any of those harmonics, it will be a basic sine wave, each with a different frequency and amplitude, but a basic sine wave.

      @@NeonPLotus Yea the cross-modulation and Turing machine/Binary are the strong points, but it lacks the same deep editing that Serum has, like I did in this video with the waveforms, it's also very CPU heavy and the filters are average. The problem with the wavefolders in the FX section is they aren't key-tracked to the input key, therefore not as accurate, specifically when doing FM/AM etc.

    You say that 'for purists' this is not wavefolding, but this is not wavefolding...for anyone, you don't need to be a 'purist' to know this. You say the waveform begins to 'look like wavefolding' but what about how it sounds? when you try out your technique the results sound so dissimilar to wavefolding that you immediately ditch the idea and start FM synthesis instead. If you know this isn't wavefolding, why title the video that.
