  • **UPDATE**
Scarpa also tested these shoes and agreed there was an issue. They sent me replacements. I tested them and they were dry after at least 12 hours. Scarpa responded politely and efficiently and the new shoes are good. I have worn them outside and there is no leaking. - Than you Scarpa.
    ***UPDATE**

We've had no issues with our shoes (my wife & I) having walked the Camino Frances 790km + 200km in Nov 22 (all weathers) they were perfect. We've since purchased another 2 pairs, this model & the new mk2 for a return to the Camino this winter

My Scarpa gtx mid definitely leak through the toe box. Just spent 6 hours of wet feet in Snowdonia after walking across 30 minutes of slightly damp moss. No rain. No rivers.nothing higher than the membrane level.

With having a Gore Tex inner membrane its suppose to do that. Gore Tex is a one way membrane that is waterproof on one side and breathable on the other side allowing moister to seep through so if you have a wet body part it allows it to grab the moister and pull it through so your body part then will become dry. Your test was doing it backwards

Thanks Josh, that's not correct. You may be getting confused with breathability. the membrane does not work one-way, no membrane does, that would require some sort of micro-valve system. How it works is that the membrane weave is tight enough to prevent water molecules passing through but is 'gappy' enough to allow much smaller water vapour to pass through. So the vapour from your hot feet should pass outside, allowing internal moisture control, but water should never pass through. It is not a one-way membrane it is the same either direction.
There are lots of videos available from Gore-Tex on how they test shoes and they all involve either filling the shoe with water, or standing a dry shoe in a vessel of water. These are the tests I did. Scarpa also confirmed that they do exactly the same tests I did.

They are suppose to be breathable no?

Breathability refers to vapour not water. Water molecules are bigger than vapour and so the membrane is just right, it passes through vapour but not water. The test I did is the same one that Scarpa do.

It’s one way, it’s supposed to come out.

Thanks Bob. No that is not correct, firstly there is no such thing as a one-way membrane. That would require some sort of micro-valve system. You may be getting confused with the Gore-Tex claim that moisture can escape. (I am not disputing this claim I just can't verify it). So basically water molecules are too small to penetrate the membrane but vapour (half water/half gas) molecules are small enough. So the vapour from your hot feet should be able to get out, which they call breathability, but the larger water molecules from rain and puddles cannot get in.
The test I did is the correct one. There are videos online of how to test Gore-Tex footwear and they all involve filling the shoe with water or standing a dry shoe in a vessel of water. Scarpa informed me they do exactly the same tests I did.
As an update they sent me a pair of replacement shoes and boots and both of they passed the test of dryness after at least 12 hours, which is good enough for me.

@@pauldevine2498 thanks Paul, it would be interesting to have some idea of why yours failed in the video.
I assume you’re going to amend your video now that it appears you had a faulty pair.
Funnily enough I bought a pair after watching your video on the basis that if your pair of Gore Tex shoes failed that test then all similar shoes should fail. I really like them, walked 12 miles straight off with no problem, haven’t been in the wet yet though.
I enjoyed your video so keep up the good work and happy hiking.

Thank you Bob, That's a really kind comment. I wasn't planning on updating the video, but I updated the information section to say that I had received a new pair and they are good. In fact I walked for an hour today in a downpour and my feet were dry. Incidentally on the subject of keeping dry I recommend Berghaus Deluge Pro 2.0 Over trousers. They have full length zips so getting them on and off is a breeze. In fairness I haven't tried many others but these ones are great. Hope you have many happy hours walking in your new shoes with dry feet
