Haaland began and continued the season with a bang but ended it with a low. After all the terrifying scoring, when defences figured him out and became watertight against him he became powerless and scored just a solitary (01) goal in his last 8 games of the season. Messi in the face of such blockades would almost always be able to find a way to break through and make a goal contribution. In addition to his impressive goal record for PSG, I could argue that he won Ligue 1 for them, considering all his assists and also his goal that earned a draw that led to them clinching the trophy. On the other hand, Haaland disappeared from the most crucial games of the season: the two semi-final matches and the finals of the UCL as well as the FA Cup finals. Messi and PSG may have performed dismally in the UCL but at least they participated and reached the round of 16. Compare that with Haaland being completely absent and inexistent from the greatest of competitions (the World Cup), moreover one where Messi was a beast! Messi also boasts a good record in his 7 UCL matches played. Haaland doesn't create anything special and only managed to achieve what he achieved thanks to a very good team and a prolific coach surrounding him. Messi has much greater impact on his teams and is capable of carrying them, but the same cannot be said of Haaland, who is dominantly a goalscorer whereas Messi is much more. I bet you Messi's PSG this season would hardly have dreamt of achieving what they achieved without him, whereas Haaland's Manchester City would still have been sure of winning even without him, though he greatly boosts the team's goalscoring record. Apart from goals - all Haaland's achievements are tied exclusively to goals - Messi outclasses Haaland in almost all other performance aspects and details. The age factor vis-a-vis performance also lends more credit to Messi. No disrespect to Haaland; he's prolific in every sense of the word, I'm so proud of him and wish him the very best in his career as he's still very young and has much to achieve ahead of him. There's no way anyone in his right senses would overlook his uncommon goal record and accompanying accolades as well as team trophies in 2022/2023. But I reckon that the same reason Cristiano Ronaldo could never ever compare to Messi is the same reason Haaland could never compare to Messi or trump him in this year's Ballon d'Or (taking into account this season's performances, though). A complete goalscorer can't match a complete footballer. At best, Haaland should come in second place, very close like Van Djik and take home the best striker award like Lewandowski.

Haaland deserves it, without a doubt. It's been an outstanding year for him, and no one else comes close at club level. Messi will most likely win it, and you can't really argue against the achievement of being a world cup winner, although I personally think it would be an incredibly boring result, and as much as I respect Messi for his talent and lifetime achievements, I couldn't care less if he adds another Ballon D'or to his existing 7. That's a Ballon D'or ceremony I wouldn't mind ignoring.

I have some different opinion.....why...both messi and Holland will have treble, if u talk about dribble,assist,player rating,man of the matches,chances created,..messi is far ,far better performance,when Holland was not there city had won premier league,reached ucl semifinal....we have seen performance of holland in his year 's ucl semifinal...if we talk about g/a ,both have almost equal ....success of city is not only because of holland but so many best players are there who have contributed...but in world cup messi was stand alone performer,in league also in around 30 matches he has 32g/a.....and in the last can u compare world cup with champions league.....and last but not the least ,is there any competition where only because of holland' performance city is winning, there are many more players but not in case of argentina n psg....here without messi and in psg without mbappe n messi it would not have been possible ...

I have no doubt Messi will win it. Goal contribution is key since Messi is also a playmaker and not a lone forward. Accepted, that Halaand has more, however the margin is not huge. I believe Halaand is in the 60s region whereas Messi is in the 50s region. The award is focused on which footballing components the individual has excelled in first and foremost and then how that has directly elevated the team. This includes goals, assists, dribbling, passing, through ball etc. I am not going to even mention the french league because the truth is that although it will be used in the final equation given Messi played 30 odd matches in it and perfomed at a very high level in most of those games and won key points. Points that took the title away from Lens who had a very good chance of grabbing the title. It will all come down to the treble and the world cup for the voters. I am certain what Messi has done in the world cup singlehandedly will weigh more. It was a once im a life time journey and performance in each of the 7 games he played to lift that trophy. It is very harsh that Haaland won't win because the treble is the pinnacle in club football but a world cup year has always, every single time, historically held a different stature when it comes to Ballon Dor. As mentioned earlier it is not like Messi had a dead club season, he did well individually for most of the season which is how it will balance out 🤷

@@elizabethcsicsery-ronay1633 He was crucial during the whole Premier League campaign, top scorer of the whole competition (broke, player of the year, young player of the year, 3rd with most assists in Man City, 2nd top scorer in FA cup, top scorer in UCL (whole competition). He definitely is the best player of the treble. He does what he has to do as a number 9. Plus many goals he has scored are Puskás award worthy. Did I mention he broke the record of most goals scored in a single Premier League season? All in his debut season. Messi had an okay season in PSG and an overrated WC campaign, where he scored 5 (very controversial) penalties. Let’s forget the penalties thing, it’s still a 7-game tournament, that shouldn’t be enough, compared to a whole great season from Erling. Who deserves it? Haaland. Who will win it?
