  • So you want to mow lawns solo? Sounds fun until you've been doing it for a few years and your body starts falling apart. There is great money in mowing lawns solo, but for you to be able to actually stick around you MUST prioritize your health. It's not sexy to talk about, but if you really want to go down this path I can't tell you how important it is to make sure you are physically fit enough to do enough VOLUME of lawns to actually make some decent money. Here are some of the things I do that have helped tremendously with the physical nature of the job.

    MY STORY:
    In 2016 I had been in law enforcement for 7 years.
    I was not in control of my schedule, I was hardly making any money, and I was away from my family working nights and holidays. I was capable of more, and I was silently suffering. I knew I was selling myself and my family short.
    I started Florida Turf Pros as a side hustle in 2016 before going full time in 2017.
    My lawn business changed my life.
    I control my own schedule, control my own income, and I am proud of what I have built; a business that supports me, my family, and some employees.
    If you are a lawn care business owner, this channel will be a valuable resource for you.
    This really is a great industry to be in, and I hope that by documenting my journey it will help you.

    Man when I switched to long sleeve and a wide brim hat with a neck cover it changed the game for me. That neck cover made a massive difference. All my work shirts had spf75 built into the fabric. And you are right on with monitoring your heart rate. I’ve always been great at keeping my heart rate down and I can go and go and go all day. I take Hy-lite electrolyte caps. Got sick of flavored water. Pro tip get 1 gal. insulated water jug with a wide opening and use a small rectangle Tupua wear container to make a block of ice for it each day. Was perfect and would stay cool the entire day. And it’s not rocket science. Look at how Arabs dress in the Sahara desert. They got it down.

    Framing with a crew of Hispanics taught me, long sleeve fishing shirts, a Panama jack hat, and bringing a microwave. That's the 3 primary things I learned from them and a few cuss words and how to ask for more nails. Lol.

    I spent 30 years at UPS out in the heat and all elements! Summer heat is no joke, let alone heat stroke! I do lawncare part time and long sleeve shirt, wide brim hat, and proper hydration along with pacing are spot on survival necessities in the summer! Thanks for the safety reminder!

    Some great points here. I wear long sleeves (dry fit) but also the shirts have an attached hoodie, which covers my neck and face. The wide brim hat is a great choice, however the ball cap is a better solution for me because I wear those large headphones over my entire ears not the small ear buds and they go over my head this would interfere with any type of hat besides a ball cap.

    I can't emphasize how much covering your skin helps. An overlooked thing is your hands. Wearing a thin glove with a rubberized palm helps me a lot. Keeps the skin on my hands from cooking. I don't think sunscreen last long on the hands while you're working. It seems like the sweat glands there work overtime. I do a wide brim hat, safely glasses, long sleeve sun shirts, thin synthetic work pants, and the previously mentioned gloves. People think I'm a lunatic I'm sure, but the guy with short sleeves and a baseball hat is cooking himself every day. That's how I was averaging 100 lawns a week solo last year in hot St. Louis.

    I’m a solo operator, however, due to the fact I’m the sole caretaker of my disabled mother, so I limit my number of jobs. I also have my own health issues (high blood pressure, joint problems due to an injury and I dehydrate fast). So, I feel this the video! Buddy, I completely agree and have been doing everything you said from the jump, well maybe except the heart rate monitoring but the long sleeves subject matter is huge. Protecting your forearms from the sun, mosquitos, poison ivy and even flying objects coming at you from the trimmer (they hurt at times) is one of the best things you can do and is so over looked due to the heat factor. Once your body gets used to the long sleeves, you don't even realize your wearing it until someone comes along as says, " how is it that you can wear long sleeves in this heat". I hear that all the time. The Dri Fit Microfiber polyester long sleeve shirts are the best in my opinion, a bit more $ but well worth the investment in you/the business. Like your said, prioritize your health in the number one thing we need to be doing cause as a one man show, if your down for a day or two, that means zero $ flow coming in and that is no bueno!

    • @FloridaTurfPros
      @FloridaTurfPros  Месяц назад

      Also, you just don’t realize how much more comfortable. It is doing straw jobs when you’re not getting pricked in the arms by the straw or doing hedge trimming jobs in your arms are protected. So many benefits to having long sleeves on during the day.

    • @FloridaTurfPros
      @FloridaTurfPros  Месяц назад +2

      To be honest, I have taken creatine for a very long time because it just makes me feel very strong. The water retention from creatine actually has the opposite effect, and I never had issues with cramping muscles. It takes about 30 days to really top off your creatine stores in the body, but there is a noticeable difference in the way you will feel. It is literally the most studied and proven sport supplement recommended by every expert in has absolutely zero negative side effects when taken properly.

    • @williamstravis123456
      @williamstravis123456 Месяц назад

      It helps prevent cramps if correctly hydrated. I wouldn't go over 5-7.5g a day though! It's not terrible to go over, but few studies show 5g is a good number to stick with.
