I just started a 5e campaign called “Dawn of the dark sun” which is a setting my players don’t even know exists. I’m running it like a standard campaign and my players (3 of which are magic casters) will slowly find out that magic is essentially a pollutant and is poisoning the world, creating huge desserts with odd creatures. But that’s all I’ve got planed so far. (If anyone has any ideas for my campaign I would really appreciate them.)
Best way to get people to see your post! I hope it works out and you get lots of info. There's also a Dark Sun FB group, and they're pretty active. They might be able to help you out. facebook.com/groups/DarkSunFans/
Awesome. I’ve actually been thinking of doing the same thing using the lore of Dark Sun. I also thought it would be cool to combine evil dead 3 element where my players warp into the future that is dark sun or they just find themselves waking up in the desert and have to learn to adapt to the dark sun setting
@@TiffanyLynneCaprice ha ha. You'd be surprised, remember that New Mexico has endured over a thousand nuclear weapons tests:) Joking aside I only just found out about this setting a week and a half ago, I like the fact that magic has a very real cost and the Bronze Age inspired setting is just awesome. I would love to DM a game in this setting. I kind of got fed up with D&D because I would spend hours coming up with interesting Quest but the players would just attack every NPC they encountered until they we're themselves killed, then they would get mad at me for killing them, to which I would respond "I'm sorry that your level 1 characters were unable to kill an entire fortified city that has a culture where people are required by law to keep arms and practice martial skills for four weeks every year" The last straw was when I set up a campaign where they would be playing as a band of sea Raiders. They had a ship and I just told them go forth and by Force of Arms achieve fortune and Glory. They never boarded the ship, they just attacked their own village and killed their own families. Maybe I'll try to find a different group, or maybe those people I used to play with have matured a little bit, man I just realized it's been 4 years (sorry about the length of the comment a doctor just prescribed me adderal for ADD and I think it kind of makes me ramble) I am getting a lot of stuff done though, yesterday I showed up for work 30 minutes early and there wasn't a lot for my co-workers to do when they showed up. After work I went home and cleaned my house then painted a Bob Ross style painting. I'm sure there will be some downsides. I didn't get to sleep till 3 a.m. last night. I probably need to back the dose way off.
i missed out growing up on darksun,my favorite game was darksun shattered lands for pc and as a kid my imagination went wild from that and pamplet, after decades later i discovered there was board games and i had no idea darksun was more then the video game
That’s so cool! I had no idea Dark Sun was a thing until this campaign so I had no clue there was a video game. Maybe one day you’ll have the chance to join a group and run a campaign in this setting. 😊
Ya know, I was just talking with my friends about how cool it would be to have an Insectoid race in D&D. I didn’t know the Thri-Kreen existed until this video so thanks for that! Also, I too make D&D videos if you’d like to take a look. :)
I'm actually really enjoying playing a Thri-Kreen. I feel like it's a very versatile race, and I enjoy the ability to claw and bite my enemies, on top of everything else. I'll definitely check out your videos!
That’s awesome! I’ve really enjoyed learning about them and getting to play them. I actually just picked up a Gythka, which is their preferred weapon, and if I survive to level five, I get my proficiency, and then I’ll really get to deal out a lot of damage. 👍
What made the box set Dark Sun so difficult, besides dealing with psyonics and water, was having no access to metal. Everything had a break chance and if you didn't have the improvised weapon skill you were hosed. That's why Thri-kreen were nice natural weapons.
Hahaha. Yes. It was very enjoyable. Definitely haven’t played D&D for a long time due to inability to get together. Birthright was the last campaign we were playing when everything stopped. 😂
Yes. It was good and such a huge world that there was so much to do. However, I found that it did start to drag after 2+ years on the same campaign. So if the DM keeps the campaigns concise there’s a lot of room to play and so many things to do. Plus you can really expand businesses and towns, etc, and rule things.
It depends. I was away for a few months at the start of the campaign but I believe you have to have at least one royal ruler. As time went on and we gained more territory the opportunity to become a ruler or chieftain or similar presented it to other members of the party. So yes, to a degree. But there was definitely travel/ignoring the kingdom and having other rule. There’s also an option to fight battles, and those are very strategy based.
I DMing a game atm, and after my players level up abit I'm going to be dropping them into a dark sun style world, where they are going to have to find a way back. So I'm glad I'm able to get some bitesized videos on the setting, I'll be making my way through the series, proving every one doesn't die in the second session. Keep it up :)
I'm glad you're enjoying watching! I found that Dark Sun wasn't as terrible as I thought it would be. We've definitely had a few more close called then we had in our Planescape campaign, but nothing permanent yet. I think the hardest thing is the healing, because you have to rest before you can use magic to get above 1HP. We've got a pretty well balanced party, which is great, because there's usually someone that can throw some healing your way before it gets too bad. But also, everything wants to kill you. Still fun, though! :)
I liked your :new player" descriptions of the setting. I also like the name you have chosen for this since you are someone new to Dark Sun. you should post these in the Dark Sun Facebook group so we can keep updated.
We've been playing in Dark Sun for about six months now, and I have to say that I quite enjoy it. planescape is a huge deal,, but so is darksun and ravenloft are my 3 favorits campaign settings, and if in doubth about planescape play torment i think they had made a very good idear of what planescape is;; well you would not meet an npc in darksun that would ever give you 3 choices of quest, they dont care about youre opinon you do it or you dont
Planescape was the first campaign I played and we definitely accidentally ended up in Ravenloft at one point! It was great cuz there were always a lot of options of quests and places to go.
@@TiffanyLynneCaprice it important that the dungen master who runs either dark sun or ravenoft knows alot about the world or else it will be like a huge joke and when the player are plying under a dungeon master who do knows about it he/she might end up killing all players for they got the wrong impression of the world
Thanks. So far, I like it here, but I think that might change, especially if I suddenly die! Next session is tonight, so there should be an update on Sunday.

Interestingly enough, Thri-kreen are incapable of casting arcane magic according to the lore. Although, a thri-kreen arcane magic user could be interesting, since it implies they have obtained the ability to cast it some how.
Haha. Interesting! I had no idea. Clearly we ventured into Dark Sun and took some creative liberties. 😂 At least we had a good time, besides all the suffering.

Thanks. It was definitely something difference. Only started playing it a few years ago so it’s all new. We switched to Birthright after Dark Sun but I just didn’t find it as enjoyable. Too much in the way of politics and, not that I’m a murder hobo or anything, but not enough murdering/action.
I don't think 5e Darksun is as difficult as 2e was but I haven't played 5e darksun so I'm intrested to see how it turns out. In 2e Darksun you would have a character tree so when you loose a character you would have another one ready the DM could bring in, you also started at 3rd lvl so you would be less likely to be one shotted.
And I haven’t played Dark Sun in 2e, so I’m no frame of reference. But I feel like there’s a good chance it might be easier. Or maybe because there’s no official conversion, that made a different. Idk. But it was enjoyable!

Dark Sun: Proving even a terrible place can have a savage beauty.
Wait, Kalak of Tyr is still alive? Darn it, Rikus!
As for a name, would "Athas to ashes" be too on the nose?
That is a GREAT name! Love it!

I agree. Thri-Kreen are the best. I would 100% play one again given the opportunity.
Dark sun isn't even a fictional setting, it's just an accurate depiction of what it's like to live in New Mexico.
But I would assume with a few less Thri-Kreen... 😂
