Amazing tutorial. I play rugby now for over a year and had around 10 games so far. Tackling is by far my biggest weakness atm. My teammates play like furious animals on the pitch and I feel like a soldier on a suicide mission whenever I have to stop them in practise. I will definetly take your advices to my heart and practise the movement to get the muscle memory, so I'll be 100% committed to tackle from then on. Greetings from Germany. (Really small rugby nation)
Remember it is an essential part of this game, what differentiates it from any other ball games. So you got to improve and turn your weakness in a strength. The good news is: it is only a question of will and technique, both of which can be acquired by anybody. You gotta fight your potential apprehension by just doing it. Usually hesitation and wrong position is what causes injury. The harder you go for it the less likely you will hurt yourself (as you are generating the impact). Keep your eyes open all the way. Keep training it. (i put my own breakdown of tackle phases in a comment hereabove, when I used to play there was no internet, so I put lots of personal thoughts into it and I hope it will help you guys). Remember a team with good tackling skills and collective defense (and rucks) is very hard to beat, even if it is allegedly inferior. And the harder you consistently pound the opponent, the more they start doubting themselves. As Conan says with a German accent: “crush your ennemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentations of their women”. It always works!!
I coach U13s and senior ladies. In terms of tackling I know that the "micro skills" set shown here are probably the most important aspect of teaching tackle skills. To many coaches through their players into the tackle drill without the proper skill set. Good video.
A classic bad tackle technique is seen in the Scotland v Ireland six nations March 12th 2023.(about 70 minutes into the match ). Tacklers head struck violently by front of hip+leg and a long pause where he needed oxygen , before being wheeled off on a stretcher . Say a prayer for his recovery .
Watching this as a newbie and I see so many of the mistakes I make when I tackle, especially putting my head in front of the attacker and dropping too early. I'll keep practicing 💪🏻
Thanks, much appreciated. I have to do rugby at school tomorrow and I’m scared to be tackled or tackle so it’s great to get a head start and know the basics.
I’m playing rugby atm and have no idea what I’m doing , I only joined because my friend made me but now that my mum actually bought all the stuff I need now I gotta play , I just don’t know what I’m doing so this video kinda helped
Do you have any advice on fear of getting hurt in rugby? Because I feel like that's holding me back a lot when I play rugby because I get scared... People don't expect me to be like that especially because I'm a prop so..
Hey 😃 I get asked this quite a lot. Getting hurt in rugby is almost inevitable; if you really can't get your head around that, then you have to have a serious conversation with yourself about whether you want to play. What might help is trying to build your confidence in your technique around tackling and the contact area. So at least you're giving yourself the best chance of being safe. I'd recommend really practicing your tackle technique at a low level e.g. at walking pace with a pad and gradually increase the intensity until its closer to a game scenario. Concentrate on where your head and shoulder goes to make you as safe as possible. Once your happy with your technique just look to implement it in games and the best way to do this is just to commit 100% to tackles and carries. The more you do this you'll start to get more confident and you're reducing your risk of injury. As soon as you go into things half-hearted then you're more likely to get injured. You can also work on you physical conditioning which can help reduce injuries.
Great tutorial thank you for making this. Might you do a tutorial in future on tackling for intermediate/advance players? Or a video on tackling in huge amounts of space? I struggle with that a lot as a forward and I hate being stepped by agile players!! I imagine my footwork is the problem
Thanks 😃we are looking at putting something together that covers all those points. But generally, in huge amounts of space its about trying to dictate to a defender where you want them to go using your footwork.

Hey, there is a big debate in American football about the hip drop tackle being banned , the way you broke down is how to tackle is the way it is taught in American football it is an art form , do they teach players to hip drop tackle in rugby ?
i recently started tackle,i have not tackled anyone this season cos im still a bit scared, but its mainly bc of the injuries other kids on my team have got lip cut:had to get stitches hitting head:sit out for a bit kicked in the face by a cleat/boot:bloody nose blister on foot:cant play for the rest of the game foot stomped on:2 minute break so yeah,im scared(ish?)
Hey 🙂 rugby is a full contact sport and tackling is the toughest bit. The 2 points to be as safe as possible and to reduce injuries are: 1. Make sure your technique is safe and efficient. You need to be able to react quickly from lots of different angles and get your head and shoulders into the correct positions. Start at a low intensity from different positions and gradually build up into higher intensities then add decision-making and finally take it into drills and games. 2. Commit 100% to every tackle. As soon as you go in with half your effort you immediately put yourself at greater risk of injury. Fully committing to every tackle will put you in better positions and with each attempt you'll gain confidence. Unfortunately, you can't avoid every problem/injury in rugby and it is a part of the game. Equally it's worth doing some shoulder strength training to help your body cope.
I just started playing for my uni team I was told In my first training to go in with the shoulder and then wrap my arms around their legs can you give info why it's illegal to do that?
In any tackle you need to show intent to wrap your arms otherwise this would be deemed a shoulder charge which is illegal as its dangerous. Hope this helps!
Hey Denzel, I have a reels covering this on our Instagram and TikTok. But the keys to tackling bigger players is the late drop in height and full commitment to the tackle.
I dont completely agree with what he says. First phase I would move very fast towards the ball carrier, whilst staying very light on the feet (until 3m to a couple of meters from collision). Requires good footwork and agility (so consider doing lots of jump rope in your free time). Then I would say mirror his feet/run line (again stay on your toes very agile whilst moving fast) to cut his run trajectory. The lighter you are on your feet and can move both directions the more will cause attacker confusion. Then 3m/10ft from collision go low, meaning, still on your toes, with a position of forward imbalance, move the upper body very low whilst half squatting (not sure I express myself correctly, but at this stage you are still running but going low on the leg and upper body). Your eyes are still on the opponent all the way. Throw yourself forward with punch to have the hardest shoulder contact (exactly in the middle of the opponent body). This is the phase that requires most timing. I recommend at training to first let the opponent impact you so you appreciate a situation where he or she takes charge, then calculate to throw yourself half a second ahead of what the attacker led collision would be (then you find your best timing). Belt his legs as the shoulder hits the attacker and lift them on the opposite side of your hitting shoulder (so if you use the left, pull his legs to your right out your flanks and vice versa if using your right shoulder). The advantage for the men amongst us is you will prevent a potential emasculation in the event your attacker knees go between your leg. Watch out: with the kinetic energy of the collision the attacker could spin too quickly around your shoulder and could land on his or her head (resulting in you being red carded nowadays).
Terrible technique bro. I see injuries ahead. Start off tackling from one step away on one knee. Never take eyes off the target area and drive downward in the tackle. Good luck everyone.
