  • Lego WW1 Battle for Fort Vaux Stop Motion Brickfilm
Fort Vaux was the second fort to fall in the Battle of Verdun after Fort Douaumont which was captured by a small German raiding party in February 1916. Fort Vaux had been modernized before 1914 with reinforced concrete top protection like Fort Douaumont and was not destroyed by a German heavy artillery fire, which had included shelling by 16-inch howitzers. The superstructure of the fort was badly damaged but the garrison, the deep interior corridors and stations remained intact, when the fort was attacked by German troops on June 2.
The defense of Fort Vaux was marked by the heroism and endurance of the garrison, including Major Sylvain-Eugene Raynal. Under his command, the besieged French garrison repulsed German assaults, including fighting underground from barricades inside the corridors, during the first big engagement inside a fort during World War I.

Fort Vaux held out for seven days - the last three without water, inflicting 2700 German casualties while losing 100 men,. When the garrison surrendered, for the last time in history, they were accorded the honors of war, with the German commanding officer calling his troops to attention and present arms (the rifle salute). as they marched out. Garrison commander Major Reynaud (a reservist) had lost his sword in the battle, so the commander of the attacking 7th German Army, was presented him with a new one by the army commander, Wilhelm the Crown Prince of Germany. The defense of the fort inspired the Maginot Line, the West Wall (Siegfried Line) and Stalin Line as well as defenses such as Sevastopol.

Most of the French fortresses were shelled constantly and the sound of whistling shells would strike fear into the French soldiers. It was a terrible and horrifying moment that a soldier could ever live through.

Thanks. I film at 15 frames per second and I use photoshop to draw in a lot of special effects right into the pictures.
I also purposely shake the camera when I film the first 2-3 pictures of an explosion. If you look back at my very first few stop motions--they weren't that great, so practice and experience help a lot over time.

3:07 Flamethrowers were horrifying to those that it where used against but only the German forces would of used this devastating weapon. Well even if they used this weapon the flames it self didn't kill the enemy most of the time but that the enemy would flee the fortress or trench and would get shot down by normal weapons such as rifles, machine guns and maybe shotguns.

Man. That animation is great. It has that gritty and dark tone. But sadly people burning animation is actually bad. But no worries, I don't blame you. You'd just better try use regular fire pieces next time instead of melting animation (and use some dark music next time). And fort itself is great as well!
