I have been a long time Tekken player and now am a black belt in Kyokushin karate a well as been training Kickboxing for over 6 years. The biggest things I learnt after I built a solid foundation in martial arts was from Tekken. I always tried to react to things and be faster but as I got older I learnt very fast I wasn't as fast as I thought. I had so much trouble dealing with fast and tricky fighters. But Tekken taught me about 'option select' which in the game was basically using movement and spacing to understand the range of risks that could be thrown at you at a given spacing so you have to calculate the least amount of options in your brain and predict moves and counter appropriately. This changed the way I fight because it's easy to be overwhelmed in a fight when the person is fast and tricky. But understanding the relationship between the space and the strike reduces that feeling and allows you to reduces your sensory overload, thus reducing fatigue, thus increasing efficiency. When I paired 'option select' with 'whiff punishing' and 'challenging' I noticed my fight IQ really grew and my success went up. Don't get me wrong reactions are still essential in combat Sports but it's not everything it's made to be. Sometimes reacting to a combo isn't just the 'physical' reaction, it's reading the space and conditioning of the opponent that made the opponent's settup readable. Once you've committed to the educated low energy mental decisions you commit to the counter with 'confidence'. And the more confident you are in your reads the less taxing the body movement will be. In theory the better your deduction skills under pressure the better you are at effectively fighting.
His philosophy towards overloading an opponents CNS and reducing their reaction time is interesting as hell. If you watch the video on why GSPs superman jabs were so effective (which nobody else seems to emulate well), it basically goes hand in hand with his fighting theory. GSP was a master at being able to chain his superman punch into multiple options such as a kick, takedown, or another punch. On top of that he could start multiple techniques using the same motion, so he could start throwing something, read the reaction, and then change his own move into something different, eg faking a superman jab into a double leg fighting him must have felt like a nightmare trying to figure out what was coming at you which, like he said, would then overload and lower your reflexes and then make everything so much worse

This is a whole new level of professionalism to what I try to do in jits: I liked to refer to a "move/technique" as a unit of time, so it provides an idea of when one would be able to successfully implement a move, depending on distance/complexity; but breaking it down into frames makes it so much more specific, both to the move & to the person. GSP, this is why we still respect you as the consummate mixed martial artist!
Imagine being that guy measuring frames of ufc fighters for fun when suddenly the best welterweight of all time drops in to see his work. Unreal, GSP and his team changed the modern era of mma.
The absolute humility of this guy. "I won the fight by an inch". When he pretty clearly won 29-28, first round he lost rounds 2 and 3 he won pretty clearly by grappling.
It's like playing mortal Kombat and you look up the moves that have the shortest frames to have that advantage it's crazy. At that time MMA fighters even now they don't understand the faint game
I remember a friend of mine who compete many times against Lyoto in Karate, saying he was the fastest guy on UFC. And then we were there giving him some names to compare and he was saying : "Lyoto is faster" so someone said "BJ Penn" and he hesitated and said: "Man, BJ is a bullet".
@@tinkertanner165 I still think it’s so crazy BJ got all the way up to 190 to fight him. It’s also super cool in the context of the comparison of their speed!

Did this method start with boxing
holy shit og move
Most greats got signature moves even though you know it's Coming. Nothing you can do to stop it.
Looks like even Joe Rogan forgot that being mentioned too
Thats genius man. Gsp is the perfect example of using your discipline and brain as your best assets
This just shows you GSP is on another level. The 🐐 imo
“The hands can never match the eyes” Champions are made from their ability to study and improve themselves, case in point; Georges St-Pierre
GSP and Tom Brady are the the kings of study for their crafts.
GSP + Firas and Brady + Belichick.
Watched from UFC58 St.Pierre vs Penn, & Still Watching in 2021‼️GSP▫️🐐❕
This dude just fucked my mind in so many different ways like wtf 💀💀💀💀
GSP "And now we get into what I call secret weapon stuff"
Joe Rogan "You mean like DMT?"
“Have you ever seen a monkey’s reaction time?”
GSP "you wanna do things that stimulate him"
Joe Rogan *chub appears*
GSP basically talking about the boxing art of feints
Gotta love GSP the GOAT, a true rolemodel
Love to see George showing BJ respect one of my favorite fighters
Imagine being that guy measuring frames of ufc fighters for fun when suddenly the best welterweight of all time drops in to see his work. Unreal, GSP and his team changed the modern era of mma.
The absolute humility of this guy. "I won the fight by an inch". When he pretty clearly won 29-28, first round he lost rounds 2 and 3 he won pretty clearly by grappling.
The GOAT..what a mind!
GSP grinded like he was still training against school bullies.
It's like playing mortal Kombat and you look up the moves that have the shortest frames to have that advantage it's crazy. At that time MMA fighters even now they don't understand the faint game
Israel understands this
Brilliant insights by GSP.
“And now for my secret weapon, unknown to all mankind, I use video footage and feints”
GSP’s new secret weapon is his hair-mesmerizes his opponents, too strong for headphones even.
“When I was champion during my welterweight run…” such a cold line, jeez
God damn, GSP has such passion for MMA still.
I know right?.........I miss those days yrs ago.
I just realized/remembered......he actually said he doesn't actually like fighting/competing.
George "Master Baiter" Saint Pierre
GSP will always be one of the GOATS in the UFC and MMA, such a class act, so smart, so dangerous, and such a well rounded human being.
For anyone who's wondering, it's Lyoto Machida who had the second fastest reaction time.
Until Jon feinted with his knee and caught him with a left overhand.
Fast Reaction time.
Poor reset time.
Tiring CNS with Feints, to slow down Reaction time
That's how Agassi was winning Becker in Tennis back in the day
I remember a friend of mine who compete many times against Lyoto in Karate, saying he was the fastest guy on UFC. And then we were there giving him some names to compare and he was saying : "Lyoto is faster" so someone said "BJ Penn" and he hesitated and said: "Man, BJ is a bullet".
BJ fought Machida. Should watch it.
@@tinkertanner165 I still think it’s so crazy BJ got all the way up to 190 to fight him. It’s also super cool in the context of the comparison of their speed!
this guy just sounds like a legendary man
Good thing Khabib escaped GSP's framing.
Lol fr. Khabib just stands there, but tbh he doesn't flinch much.
tldr in Fighting Game terms
- talk was about IRL frame data.
- BJ PENN: fastest start-up frames, lowest recovery frames.
- IRL start-up frames and reaction times lower if you overload their nervous system with animation cancels (fakes/feints). people's frame data actually change as the fight progresses.
Wow, this had me smiling so much from the brilliance of it all.
This is one of the coolest clips on fighting iq i have ever seen, i wish i was still competing so i can implement it to my sport
GSP is the Bruce Lee of UFC. He's ahead of the game and ahead of his time.
Bruce who?
George’s was always a clever mental fighter.
One of the many reasons why he's the GOAT.
robbed johnny hendricks and quit the sport, avoided all tough challenges. goat? nah
@@Gematrinator but he's old now, and he doesn't want to fight, why should he. He's living his life and training other people, he's even gotten into television and movies and stuff. one fight doesn't make the difference between whether someone is a great fighter or not.
@@Gematrinator Hendricks was on so much goddamn juice for that fight he could have opened up his own smoothie bar by just pissing into cups, also right before usada started cracking down heavy. Yes he got robbed but GSP literally brought a knife to a gun fight for that one. As far as avoided hardest challenges I couldnt disagree more
@@actionjackson1332 everybodys on steroids including ur idol gsp
@@Gematrinator legit he was the first person to voluntarily admit himself into the usada testing pool yearsssss ago but ok you know better
Thats crazy. The insight into fighting these days is so advanced.
If BJ Penn had the same preparation and work ethic GSP had he would have been unstoppable in the UFC. Probably the most naturally gifted fighter I've seen in the sport. Just didn't always have the work ethic and heart to turn him from a great fighter into the goat
That’s why GSP is the greatest of all time. Dudes out there attacking his opponent’s nervous system at distance! 🇨🇦 🐐
Damn. This is the science of fighting. GSP does strategies unlike anyone.
GSP is such a fucking legend, best fighter in UFC history
this dude is pretty high level and smart about his fights. I've probably heard more interesting and unique training ideas from GSP interviews than from all other fighters combined.
GSP is legit scary
That technique reminds me of those old b/w bruce lee clips whereby they tried use the camera to capture the movement of his punch but it was just too fast.
Stop
He protecc, he attacc
But most importantly, he watch the fight bacc
I find it funny that a gsp gets made fun of by Americans for having a funny accent but if they took him seriously they’d realize why Canada loves him
Just because people joke about his accent that doesn't mean he isn't taken seriously by Americans... I don't even know how you came to that conclusion because people all over the country and world comment how he's the goat under any video he's in. People say he would be a UFC hall of fame member.
He's respected and loved already. It's called doing a caricature. Exaggerating the most obvious traits of an individual.
Gap is the only guy that doesn’t get bullied for having an accent
Canada doesn't love him. Québec does.
I'm sorry to say but English speaking Canadians don't respect anyone from Québec who speaks french. They think we're racists, bigots, and eat the babies of anyone not born in this land. True story.
Google Amir Attaran. He's a true representative of what English Canadians think of Québécois.
I lived among them for years, and I know exactly what I'm talking about.
@@CdeHavillandMosquito Quebec people are racists 2 face bigots and everyone loves GSP...
@@leroyalflush5026 I rest my case
His secret weapon is ducking fights
I thought BJ won that first fight but it was super close.
Man I love it. Talking about overloading his opponents, not just physically tiring them out but mentally exhausting them as well. Giving the brain too much to think about, overwhelming them, and if they're overloaded, then they're open and vulnerable.
Gotta love a rich dude like bj etc that just fight for the sake of it
Being a "rich dude" coming from a wealthy family with all the natural talent in the world led to BJ Penns weakness. Laziness.
@@bentleyfonsworth9604 hard work beats talent
Beating fighters with Science, this man...
Martial ART to the fullest degree. Just listening to his strategies and revelation is nothing short of inspiring.
GSP was playing StarCraft while everyone else was playing checkers
I thought he was gonna say his corner rubbed Vaseline on him in between rounds 😂
It was for one round, got cleaned with the towel after that because BJ's corner said it to the ref, the outcome would have been the same without it. Total domination from GSP.
@@S.H.N.80s you see how I put the laughing emoji to symbolize that I was joking
@@koryggg Irony is different in different cultures bro. Here are many guys that claim it's the only reason GSP won. Sry if i missunderstood.
@@S.H.N.80s I hear you though I’m from Hawaii and gsp is still one of the goats to me without a doubt
GSP is very interesting to listen to. Such a smart guy.
Jon jones has the god given talent but he will never be a GSP
Jones pissed dirty, not even allowed in the top 10
@@leroyalflush5026 ehhhhhhhhh idk man gsp never had to deal with.usada for all we know gsp couldve been in canada with needle up his arse but ig its all about wat u can prove. Picogram or not jones is a talented man
The only thing to beat Jon Jones are piss tests, usada, and the iron head of Matt hamill
They both arguably were gifted decision wins. GSP vs Hendricks, Jones vs Gustafsson 1, and Jones vs Reyes. Khabib though, he smashed everyone… except Tibau.
GSP studying so he can speedrun through the UFC like normal people speedrun Mortal Kombat
who had the second best reaction time?
Yeah who?
Lyoto machida

A scientist and philosopher out of the cage, but a Surgeon and Ninja in the cage.
He wasn’t only an incredible martial artist but man he also brought the highest level of intelligence to breaking down his opponents. Just amazing. I doubt there is a single fighter who thinks like this even now. The guy is literally a living breathing Goku.
I don’t doubt we’ve seen him use kaioken
GSP treating MMA like a Dark Souls game.
Gsp with this haircut is killing me. He is my favorite fighter but he was always bald for no reason. He has a great head of hair but went with the spartan bald look.
He looked cooler and tougher bald tho.
Legit he looks like a metro bisecual hair stylist with this hair, js 😂
Wait do you like him with or without hair? We wait on your response, sir
Better for a fighter to shave his hair off
...it was all that "Jet Fuel" he was putting into his system...

GSP is such a master , a real warrior , smart as hell ,he would figure how to beat khabi for sure
Khabib knew it too.
Love GSP, but Khabib would have destroyed a lot of guys that GSP struggled with. Khabib represents the elite of the elite in wrestling who actually became a smooth striker. Khabib was barely entering his peak.
One of the REAL G.O.A.Ts in the UFC
I thought it was the IVs he used on Nick Diaz xD
yeah and the earth is flat
You believe pothead Diaz??
love the cursor on the middle of the screen for the whole video, thanks substitute teacher.
*Love hearing the respect from GSP towards BJ PENN*
Explains why aldo always gasses, he has that twitchy reactive nervous system style
My favourite UFC guy. Always loved seeing GSP beat up the guys who trash talked him beforehand.
What a true genius of mixed martial arts. Dude's literarilly analyzing frame by frame for weaknesses.
